RE: Urban Fantasy System Poll
First: OH my god, yes, please. I totally get the love for WoD/CoD stuff, but I can't get into it, really. It is as much its own genre as D&D and there are some stories that just don't work in the * of Darkness as a genre.
Second: Cinematic Unisystem gets my vote for the following reasons:
-
It's fast and simple to resolve. Attribute+skill+/-modifier vs a target number of 9, with exceptional successes for higher numbers.
-
Hero/fate points.
-
Templates. I can't stress enough how much I think templates are a godsend for MU players. It's 2017, we should have the option between completely 'from scratch' and 'pick a template and customize it'. The difference is between spending minutes or hours making a character. I'm old and tottering towards the sweet embrace of death. I hate wasting my precious time on making characters.

RE: MSB MU*?
It seems like things would get meta really quickly. For instance, wouldn't we have to set up a new site to complain about the MSB Mu?

RE: Savior of the Universe: Flash AhhhhAAA!
Fair enough!
I like the 'parallel dimension'/wormhole stuff myself. Or take a page from Marvel (or, God(s) help us, Gor) and have Mongo as a rouge planet that settles into a 'counter-earth' orbit.
-
RE: Savior of the Universe: Flash AhhhhAAA!
Note that this is absolutely not designed to be a damper on your enthusiasm, but if you are assigning values to the various cultures they didn't have in the source material and moving them off Mongo to a unique setting of asteroids (with internal or external atmospheres and biospheres), why are you doing Flash Gordon? And are you still doing it?
At what point do you wander into 'unique theme' territory?

RE: Savior of the Universe: Flash AhhhhAAA!
Just for clarification, I didn't actually mean that players would literally play Indy or Sam Spade. Just that elevator pitches that involve daring adventurer treasure hunters and dogged detectives are more familiar to most potential players than Hawkmen and such.

RE: Savior of the Universe: Flash AhhhhAAA!
With respect, I think having the default setting as a prequel is a bit of a mistake, for two reasons.
First, if you remove earthers from the equation, you make the game harder for casuals to really sink their teeth into it. It's easier to imagine Indiana Jones with a ray gun or Sam Spade in space than it is playing a prince of the Arboreans. Yeah, you definitely can do that, especially with a roster, but with a setting that is so niche, setting the narrative buy-in low is probably a better way to get people with character generation and out on the grid.
Yes, that takes a little fudging, but hey, maybe Mongo settled into a 'counter-earth' orbit or something.
Second, I'd suggest saying that Flash bought it. He took a ray gun blast or just went missing and other heroes from both worlds have stepped up to fight Ming and his forces. That lets the PCs be heroes, without the players knowing, from the start, that their stories are less important than the official one.

Also,
You can watch the original movie serial (which is a lot of fun, if dated) here. (Youtube Link)
The follow-ups are also available on the Internet Archive, as well as radio dramas.
The recent Dynamite comic series was excellent. And the crossover with Prince Valiant and the Phantom wacky good fun.

RE: Most 'Plug & Play' Friendly Server?
@surreality I was thinking more in terms of being able to use stuff like Thenomain's and Faraday's stuff on their Githhubs and others freely available as well, rather than having it built in.
I guess what I'm actually asking is if there is any one type of MU that has a wider variety and quality of available softcode done by third-party coders.
-
Most 'Plug & Play' Friendly Server?
I'd like to set up a MUSH/MUX and fiddle around, teaching myself how to admin and build.
On the other hand, I'm not a total masochist, so I'd like to do that with whatever has the most/best softcode stuff already available for use. Weather systems, job systems, etc. I am interested in everything but WoD character generation/system (of any flavor), since if I do eventually decide I can handle things, I wouldn't be running a World of Darkness game.
Does anyone have any suggestions about what has the best preexisting softcode options? Penn? Rhost? Something else entirely?

RE: Brainstorming: Hybrid/Homebrew Werewolf Game
Three thoughts:
I think that simplifying the Gaians as 'squeaky clean' is a bit, well, simplistic. They are still engines of eco-terrorist destruction. And have more reasons to be pissed off than they did 25 years ago. We're on the brink of a global extinction event, just killed the Great Barrier Reef, etc. The thing people forget about zen masters is that there are plenty of historic examples of zen warriors.
Good call on the Git. Given today's political climate? Nope.
As for the Silent Striders, I loved them back in the day, and I think they would actually fit into the GoF slot now that it's open pretty nicely. Not as barbarian berserkers, but as cold-eyed, professional mercenaries, well-versed in secret little wars, running with the intelligence community and the Glasswalkers, still tied to Africa and Middle East because those are places mercenary armies work and are often based. I'd think of them as the scary-ass ninja army big brothers of what used to be Blackwater.

RE: Classic World of Darkness
I'd love a little OWoD, if done well.
With absolutely no offense intended to the NWoD and fans thereof, it has always felt a little conflict and direction-light to me. The OWoD stuff is, 25 years later, somewhat goofy in places, but at least the antagonists, scope and stakes are very well defined.

RE: What RPG SYSTEM do you want to play on a Mu*?
FASERIP Marvel.
I've long thought the system is exactly at the 'sweet spot' for online use. Fast, simple, easy to intuit, nearly infinitely moddable and on an online game, even having your luck pool and experience pool be the same thing makes more sense and lets you hand out Karma on a weekly basis knowing many people will use a good chunk on it to succeed at something immediate as well as saving some up.
It's also setting agnostic, if you change the granularity of the stats.

RE: Poll: RPG System for OC Hero Game
@Misadventure Ooooh, another FASERIP update/homage to look at. (Other than 4C and Icons.) Thanks for pointing it out!
-
RE: Poll: RPG System for OC Hero Game
FASERIP/Icons is so damned quick and easy, both in terms of making a character and resolution of tasks. Social stuff would be an easy hack. A persuasion skill vs Psyche or something, for example.

RE: All Original Supers Game
I wonder if that is because most systems are kind of terrible for Supers RP to begin with? (Including most of the systems that are made for superhero tabletop games.)
I've always thought something like FASERIP or the modern knockoff, 4 Color is basically the sweet spot for systems. Percentile based and fast, simple and described narratively as well as numerically (Remarkable (30), Monstrous (75), etc. ) Anything that makes MU* combat go even slower is the enemy.

RE: DC Rebirth
I especially love the idea of using a preexisting wiki for the character stats. So much less work for the players. Well done!

RE: Interest/Volunteer Check: Major Multisphere Chronicles of Darkness
Agreed on both counts. I'd totally hang in an abandoned subterranean hotel for my faction's super-secret club house.
And another nice bit would be L.A. in the 80s would still have craploads of Deco, Modernist and just plain odd buildings and homes around.
-
RE: Interest/Volunteer Check: Major Multisphere Chronicles of Darkness
@surreality said in Interest/Volunteer Check: Major Multisphere Chronicles of Darkness:
Just throwing my yearning for 1980s Los Angeles into the mix. 'cause that's one hell of a dark setting.
West coast vampires in the 80s were prone to pathos. And inexplicable fashion choices.

RE: [Request] Policy Template
@Bobotron Thanks!
Some of the advice in this thread was very helpful for me. Eventually I did just that. Came up with the tone and content that worked for me after taking the best of what came up here.
