    • RE: RL things I love

I've been researching my family history, which I've discovered I REALLY enjoy doing.

I've discovered some shady shit, you guys.

So my grandpa Buryl was born in 1894. His mother, Pearl, married a dude named Wilson in 1899, five years later, where she was apparently working as a domestic, or working locally as a domestic for someone else. At one point, a fellow named Pearlie was living in their home as a boarder. Wilson was a farmer, so I imagine he was living there as a farmhand. Wilson dies in 1923, and she marries Pearlie in 1924.

Scenario 1: Great-grandma got preggers by Wilson a few years before they actually got married, and when she married Pearlie, he adopted Buryl.

Scenario 2: Great-grandma got preggers by Pearlie way back when, and Wilson married her for any number of possible reasons that are a rabbit hole I'm not going down because it will get way too Inception to handle, and Pearlie was able to properly acknowledge Buryl once he and Pearl married.

Scenario 3: Great-grandma got preggers by neither man, but by someone else entirely, which might tie into the Native American angle that's been passed along as a family legend, and Buryl was later adopted by Pearlie.

True story. I spent what felt like half the night running around from Walgreens to Walgreens with @EmmahSue, trying to find a pharmacist who would actually provide her with what she needed, and because it was late at night, or maybe because we were two girls together, I don't really know - she was refused more than once. Fuck Walgreens, really.

I was kind of worried about how Into the Badlands would work after progressing past the initial antagonist, but I'm pretty pleased to say the show is as engaging as ever. The new "bad guys" are great, particularly because you find yourself questioning whether they are the bad guys, and don't it seem like the good guys are the bad guys sometimes? Which makes the show even richer and more exciting.

The production and choreography are off the charts, and the casting is absolutely exquisite in terms of equality of gender, race, and orientation. No less than three different women are included in the primary ensemble, ranging in age from teenage to mid-40's and all of them are formidable in combat.

Season 1's LGBTQ inclusion was pretty subtle; a general nod to the notion that no one cares who you "wick", and then moving into season 2, we see a character many people believed would wind up as a male hero's prize discover her love for another woman and have that love (not the discovery of having feelings for another woman, just her love) further develop her as a character.

Anyway, I needn't have worried. If you haven't seen it, the first two seasons are on Netflix and are an excellent investment of your time.

@coin Season 2 gave us Bajie though, and some pretty great Widow backstory. I could have lived without the "meanwhile, in the underground bunker" stuff.

There have been accusations of Morgan Freeman having an inappropriate relationship with his step-granddaughter going on for nearly ten years. Combine this with the accusations and I'm willing to believe something isn't right.

I have some story issues one major story issue with it but it is by far the best version of the book translated into another media thus far, re: A Wrinkle In Time. Not that the bar is very high, but I do think it still has a lot of value.

My problem with Wrinkle was mainly about a particular plot point being written differently. Not because it was set someplace that wasn't in the book, and not even about the lack of Aunt Beast (I guess there's no real way to present her without coming across hokey and she became the Tom Bombadil of the film)...but the fundamental nature of a really important scene was changed, shifting the motivations of the characters, namely Meg and her father, in a way that makes the message very different.

Aesthetically the film is magnificent, the performances in and of themselves were lovely, with shout outs to my girl Rowan Blanchard (I miss Girl Meets World), and Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Hollywood Chris #2 have fantastic chemistry. And the collective stars/Misses were pretty great.

Resurrecting this thread! I'm doing a walkathon for my local greyhound rescue group. Even a $5 donation can supply treats for the dogs for a week. My original goal was $1,000 but if I can make it to $500 I would be super happy. Please consider donating!

Please enjoy pic of Rock in party hat. 🙂

P.S.: Cloak and Dagger is way, way, waaaaaaaaaaay better than my expectations. Freeform actually did good.

Freeform has actually had some pretty kick ass programming.

Is anyone else watching Dietland? It's excellent, and the aftershow hosted by Aisha Tyler called Unapologetic is also great. The whole time isn't spent talking about the show; they discuss issues of interest from an intersectional feminist perspective.

@sunny I am fascinated by this saga from a social experiment perspective. Keep us posted! And also, maybe turn it around on her and ask her why she's so worried about it? I bet the answer would be...intriguing.

Where are all of the Steven Universe fans? There have to be some here. I'm binging it and I'm obsessed. Like, "possibly trying to DIY an Amethyst costume for Halloween" obsessed.

The Curious Creations of Christine McConnell on Netflix is absolutely delightful, assuming you enjoy cooking/crafting shows, Henson puppets, and the macabre.

That being said, arachnophobics may want to watch with a friend who can give them a heads up during a couple of brief sequences.

Hey dumbass, you can't "invent" existing natural forces. You can, however, discover them.

So sorry, but nobody "invented" electricity.

      Idiot.

I'm kinda convinced the Peacock is NPH at this point. I mean, it probably ISN'T but I want it to be.

Either NPH or Donny Osmond. Pretty sure now the Unicorn is Tori Spelling, and I'm still betting on Gladys Knight for the Bee. (She's been called the Empress of Soul, and she has four back up dudes in her clue package a la the Pips)
