    • RE: Fanbase entitlement

I immediately thought of the fanbase of Teen Wolf when I saw this thread. Romantic relationships are a core element of the show that the fandom latches onto, particularly the "Sterek" and "Stydia" types. Sterek shippers tend to adamantly insist the chemistry between the two characters in question is and has always been there and often get angry about it not being pushed into overt presentation and actual canon; Stydia types go into a flurry of "this is our year!" prior to every season. (Final season coming in Nov: THIS IS OUR YEAR!)

It actually got me thinking a lot about mushes that are based on media and how we approach canon on games. I love playing in the canon settings of media based worlds that I love, but I also find I have to be very careful and remind myself to be patient when it comes to how others view canon, and the necessity of canon. It is an acknowledged sense of entitlement, and an awareness that I have to curb my own urge of telling someone UR DOIN IT WRONG.

I'm actually really bummed about this. BitN had a lot of potential to thrive.

    • Star Trek Beyond

I have to say, I liked it a lot better than the second movie, and in a different way than the first. The first will always be my favorite, but Beyond is a close second.

I think part of what helps the film is that it's an original story rather than being a reinvention of a previous incarnation of one. We get a little more insight on the personalities of the crew, rather than just seeing them as simply being the extension of their ship function.

The relationship between McCoy and Spock has always been one of my favorite things and you do get to see this dynamic in the film, and it's a pleasure.

There's also more for Chekov to do, and as on might expect, you may find your heart hurting a little bit whenever Yelchin is on screen. He makes a lot of little choices for his character's reactions to things that are just there in the background but speak volumes about who Chekov is as a person. Look for a particularly funny moment for him at the beginning of the film while the interpersonal relationships of the ship are being discussed. It's inconsequential and has no relation to the actual plot, but it's pretty funny; blink and you'll miss it.

Probably the weakest relationship development is Spock and Uhura. They don't spend a lot of time on it (which may be a good thing, I don't know), and what time is spent strikes me as wishy washy. Spock's relationship with...Spock, well, that's addressed too, in a more profound way.

Jayla (as seen in the trailer, so no spoilers) is a bad ass and fantastic addition to the franchise. I hope we get to see her again. She's smart, she's self-rescuing, she has agency, and she shows both vulnerability and strength. She's also NOT an overt romantic interest for anyone, which let's face it, for Star Trek, is refreshing.

Anyway. Go see it! You'll have a good time.

      Dear asshole co-worker,

The very least you could do when I am pulled off my job so that you can take a 15 minute break from the reception desk is say "thank you". And when you decide at the ass end of your break to strike up a conversation with the HR rep and thus wind up with a 20 minute break - right in front of me where I can see you - is apologize. I realize you want to focus on work and not excessively socialize, but some common fucking courtesy is in order.

It reminded me of another show that no one ever seems to have heard of from years back, and I later found out it's due to sharing a creator with that one. It is, of all things, a teen comedy/drama that was called Popular and it was charmingly weird enough that after just leaving the channel on whilst working on a project... I ended up watching it on purpose after that. It's not horror (beyond 'all things set in high school can be horror to adults'), but it has the same over the top funny-charming weirdness factor.

No surprise there, Popular was also created by Ryan Murphy! I used to love that show too. They were doing storylines that were ahead of their time, stuff about gender stereotype, how trans people are treated, etc.

Oh, fuck you, Tyrant. You killed the one character on the show with any kind of moral consistency, not to mention also being the easiest on the eyes in the whole damn show.

Idiots on Facebook are idiots. I will be making like Elsa eventually, but man, people's inability to have civil debates really fucking galls me at times. Especially charming when their PARENTS chime in all "well done, son!" when they've done little more than act like a particularly surly teenager.

Yes, yes, I know I should not be surprised. And that it's probably my fault for engaging the schmuck in the first place.

I don't understand why they bother raising armies. Why not just send Hundred Eyes to take care of everything?

Right? Btw just in case you didn't notice, there's a Hundred Eyes special as well that's a prequel to the series. But yes, he is a bad ass, though personally I just want to be Khutulun when I grow up.

Marco Polo season 2, y'all. I binged and watched it all in two days. Not historically accurate by a longshot, but well acted, beautifully choreographed fight scenes, amazing costumes, etc.

Players who rp antagonistic characters that are still able to integrate into mostly cooperative storytelling effort while staying true to their characters' motivations, as well as being OOC really, really chill.

People who hit "reply" instead of "reply all" in an e-mail and end up telling me something they need to be telling the person I am referring to them.

Like, is it that hard to read the metadata of the e-mail that is right there in front of you?

      Fuck.

I have this problem with my landlord. Whenever I email him and cc the roommates, he only replies to me, which leaves them in the dark. PITA.

I really can't complain for any tv show that involves previous episode recaps sung by (and possibly written by as well?) Jonathon Coulton.
