    • RE: The ADD/ADHD Thread (cont'd from Peeves)

"Specific Learning Disability" - this is why I never ever ever got tested for anything. I'm a phenomenal test taker (whether I know the subject or not) and I can learn anything I have an interest in - and my interests are wide and varied.

Try talking to me about history though and I've suddenly tuned the fuck out forever.

      FOREVER.

Learning things I hate always mimics my brother's pattern of learning (he WAS diagnosed with ADHD) - but I was always interested in science, math, english, creative writing, sociology, psychology, art, language - these things fascinate me. Give me a history book though and I've suddenly read a page 16x and have no idea what it said. So the older I get the more I think that he and I probably struggled with the same thing but I lucked out by having much broader interests in knowledge that correlated to things taught in school.

And where he would tap a pencil or make noise to get rid of his twitchiness? I did silent things that couldn't be tracked. (Like squeezing my toes in patterns which is impossible to see with shoes on.)

I'm not diagnosed with any of it. I'm not sure I should be or not - I've never been to a behavioralist and the only time I went to a therapist I was diagnosed with OCD but we didn't get too deeply into my unique ways. But damned if every time one of my friends links an article on ADD I don't think - wow, they could be describing my life.

Mostly I cope by militant scheduling and a fuckton of guilt for not doing everything I intended to do. If I schedule 30 things and get 15 of them done though, that's still more than most people so no one ever notices how much I fucked off while doing those 15 things.

That moment when you do a thing at midnight and then just wait to see the world start burning. But quietly tho.

Tonight was the culmination of a bunch of @investigations and @actions and RP that spanned I dunno how long. A year maybe? A hundred percent worth it and definitely an amazing experience to share with @Darinelle @Snackness @Sparks @Pyrephox ❤ ❤ ❤

ILUUUUUUUUUU. It was a good event. I had a really great time, and y'all make it fun to GM. ❤ ❤ ❤ So glad you enjoyed it.

So on April Fool's Day I fell through my deck while taking it easy and not doing fighter practice on my lunch break (I was doing a little light gardening instead). And not one of my friends that I told thought it was an April Fool's Day prank (it really wasn't). It's a little thing, but I love the people that know me well enough to know that 1) I don't prank, 2) I hate AFD, and 3) random bizarre accidents like that happen to me ALL THE TIME and this was nothing out of the ordinary.

      ❤ my friends. <3.

my friends that do AFD 'jokes' about being ill or wounded are no longer my friends on april 2nd

      ❤
BUT. YOU ARE NOT EVEN SUPPOSED TO BE DOING LIGHT GARDENING

I am now 5 weeks in to a broken wrist, but it's only a little crack not a full on break and so 6 weeks is more than enough time for things to knit. I will be starting pell work again on Monday with a whiffle bat instead of a sword, because if I don't do something I'm going to lose my shit.

But if I sit around all day while this last fucking week passes I will also lose my shit so LIGHT GARDENING DONE MOSTLY WITH MY OFF HAND IS WHAT I'M DOING. I just wanted to repot a goddamn rose. Is that so much to ask? I am physically incapable of just sitting on the couch. There are too many things to be done and I just want to live my life.

@Ganymede Probably not worth filing a claim, tbh. It's just a board. Not negligence but just a board. I don't think anything's broken on me - or not anything that wasn't broken before.

@mietze Probably not? I don't think homeowners' insurance covers that. It's really just one board though that had a hole in it that I couldn't see because the planter fell apart and dirt was everywhere covering it.

When a problem player who walked on the edge of banning actually turns it around and becomes a decent member of the community and fun to GM for.

Sometimes it's nice to be wrong.

@Goldfish I love doing this too! It's one of my favorite things. LOVELOVELOVE. And when I have a vignette that I wrote a year prior, and it is suddenly relevant and I get to share it with people like BOOM!

      And they like it?

IS THE BEST IS SO GOOD IS HAPPIFYING.

So there's this player who created her own character, and decided to create this problem for her character. And then she decided she wanted her character to overcome that problem, and put in an @action to be able to figure out how, officially and outside of her own personal sandbox, to fix it.

So I wrote up a response for her. A poem that encompassed a quest for a magical tea to cure the ailment.

And she took this poem, and spent a year of RP to get people involved, to go places, to explore, to research, to learn. She used this thing that she created for herself, wove a compelling story, turned it into a thing, included a metric fuckton of people, and made this wonderful story arc for her character and everyone who interacted with her.

I am so happy about this. The arc concluded today, and it was so much more satisfying because of how much RP she's put into it. I can't wait to see what she does next. I think it'll be great. It's not always about the MacGuffin - but the rich story you can create on the journey? That's where the magic lies.

@Sunny @mietze Because I fear nothing I googled it, and the closest idea I got was from Urban Dictionary:

"The uncomfortable, numb feeling you get in your legs when you wait too long to push one out. Can cause unsteady walking whilst going to the throne."

    • RE: Ideal Scene Length?

@farfalla Honestly I don't mind that if it's a fun scene either. Even in the dithering there are choices being made.

Also - who WAS camped back at those ruins? The world may never know.

    • RE: Ideal Scene Length?

2.5-3 hrs maximum, though some can run shorter and there are a few people where it can run much longer if we want it to (or if we're RPing at work and have lots of slow breaks).

If I GM a scene that runs longer than that I generally break it into 2 nights - and sometimes yes, it just takes that long to give players meaningful choices that change what happens. Because I can't come up with MY pose until you come up with YOURS. But that I don't mind, especially when players are doing interesting things.

@arkandel I have two 4 year old Australian Shepherds.

My problems is not that I don't have puppies to walk, it's that I don't have 600 Pyr puppies rolling around my floors.

      I didn't get a puppy this week.

I wanted a puppy. I have pictures of the puppy I almost got. I had a name picked out.

But I am going to be very busy in the next year and it wouldn't be enough time to spend with the puppy so I'm doing the adult thing and not getting a puppy right now and I want to CRY because puppies are the best and the world needs more puppies and I need more puppies.

      Dammit.
