Omg, so, I learned a new word today:

      Drachenfutter

It's a german word that means 'a gift you give someone who is angry at you to make them less angry at you'.

      It literally means 'Dragon Food'.

I'm going to be using this absolutely everywhere I can think to fit it in.

@Arkandel said in State of Things:

Breaking the law they are sworn to uphold is too much.

Do you really think it's that simple, though? I mean, realistically, how many laws would you say you break every day? Speeding? Jaywalking? Perhaps littering? Do you always do everything you're legally required to do in a timely manner? Etc.

The law, and the importance of various laws, are nebulous in the eyes of most, and should not be confused with justice. What if the procedure allows a child rapist to go free, even though there is a mountain of evidence against him? What if that knife wasn't technically found according to all the proper warrants, but is clearly the murder weapon and has fingerprints on it? Etc.

What if those laws are morally indefensible, such as laws that enforce discrimination that haven't been swatted down by a court? They do exist, I promise. We still see them crop up. There are heated debates on both sides of the laws about which restrooms transgender people can use. Do you think the police have no personal opinion on that? Or that those opinions might affect their reasoning?

Police are human too. The're not Justice-bots. And just like we do, they can often justify breaking a law when it's convenient (like we do when we mentally justify speeding) or serves a 'more noble' purpose. Things aren't always that clear-cut. And while I agree, in a perfect system, this kind of thing shouldn't happen, we're not talking about a perfect system.

It's just really not quite so bright line. There are so many shades of gray. Every one is situational, and whether an action is 'right' or 'wrong' largely depends on perspective and how invested you are in seeing a specific outcome come to pass.

Brain weasels? I over think/hyper focus when I think I've hurt someone. @Ganymede can attest as I know she's okay with RP with me and I still apologize if I think I'm being too wordy or if I make a joke and panic.

This is a very common thing throughout our entire hobby. I'm often this way with new people I RP with. I overcorrect about everything. Believe it or not, I'm incredibly shy. I had to go ask friends about @Devrex because I wanted to RP with him but I literally needed someone to introduce me because I was having brain weasels. (Thank god for them, if they're reading this, which they are probably not.)

Once I get comfortable with someone this starts to wear off, and I feel a lot more relaxed and chill, but man, those first few weeks are nerve-wracking.

Some of my friends still do this, and all I can do is just assure them it's ok, and if there's a problem I will tell them. It seems to help. But I totally get where they're coming from because good god it takes a lot of mental focus to just go insert myself into a new scenario and hope for the best.

So not necessarily poetry per se, but I still like the Desiderata. When I'm bummed sometimes I read through it because it just has some feel-good qualities that doesn't necessarily feel like self-help drivel.

      @@@@@@@@@@@@

Go placidly amid the noise and the haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence. As far as possible, without surrender, be on good terms with all persons.

Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even to the dull and the ignorant; they too have their story.

Avoid loud and aggressive persons; they are vexatious to the spirit. If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain or bitter, for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.

Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Keep interested in your own career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.

Exercise caution in your business affairs, for the world is full of trickery. But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals, and everywhere life is full of heroism.

Be yourself. Especially do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love; for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment, it is as perennial as the grass.

Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth.

Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.

Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here.

And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should. Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be. And whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life, keep peace in your soul. With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be cheerful. Strive to be happy.

Seriously? Are we going to do this dance again? Can you maybe, I dunno. Just fucking stop with the insistence on people having the "proper" skin color in 2022? Because that is SUCH a big "oof."

It sets up a subtle and unintentional confirmation thar staff is something players need to be protected from.

You say this like that isn't the default that most of us in this culture come from. If people didn't need to be protected from people with staff powers, we'd just give everyone staff powers, and places like this wouldn't exist.

Anyone with contemporary western educations are told to be suspicious of those in power, so I'm not sure that 'this will make people suspicious of staff' is a good reason not to set up alternative channels of dispute resolution.

Really, anything you can do to keep the peace and ensure a good experience for players should be embraced.

@ganymede said in Roster Characters & WoD?:

I think they are a great idea, for the reasons Ghost pointed out.

Rosters are usually capped or limited. This is a good thing.

Until Jenny#574 marries Luke#31 in a whirlwind romance that lasts all of two days and has a bunch of kids with him or whatever, and then life eats her so the character idles. And then Jenny#575 picks her up a week later and decides that she doesn't wanna be saddled with all of that and wants it retconned because like ohmygosh no roster should just come with a relationship like that.

Your continuity goes all to hell as each and every person plays them in a different way because they don't actually give a shit about their story or history, they just don't wanna do the chargen work.

      Nah.

    • RE: Player Omsbudsman?

There's an assumption being made here that the only people who would need such a position are somehow "bad staffers." That's hardly the case, though.

Nobody is perfect. We all have biases and blind spots and flaws in our logic that could hamper and impede us. And it's always good to have another set of eyes-or-whatever on an issue to make sure that we aren't missing something on it.

We've also somehow gotten into an idea that "good staff" are somehow capable of filling almost every role and interpersonal skill needed on a game. That is certainly not the case. I've staffed with some of you. Some of you are brilliant storytellers and coders and administrators. Some of you are downright jerks that could use some polish on your people skills. The overlap of those two circles is bigger than you might imagine, and I'm not saying I don't fall into the same trap. Doesn't make you bad staffers, though.

I think we're stumbling on the idea that 'bad staff will just ignore these guys anyway'. I mean -- yeah. They might. But bad staff aren't the only ones who could use people like this.

      Just a thought.

@sparks That's awful, I'm so sorry. I had to use a week's vacation to recover (ha) from my foot surgery, and I was salty about it.

I do at least accrue at a rate of 8 hours per pay period, so I'll have one day again on Friday, another in two weeks, etc. But still, it makes me sad.

I'm so sorry you had to burn through vacation too. 😞

One per pay period? Where do you work?!? What do you do? More importantly, can I come work with you?

Although I most like the suggestion made earlier in the thread of, essentially, a 'partial roster': a character which inhabits X particular space, and must have skills/abilities A, B, and C, but is otherwise customizable.

I'm still not clear on how this is different from like a 'wanted concepts' posting somewhere. In this one, you'd still have to create the actual character and do the chargen work, which is what rosters are supposed to be alleviating.

I'm not saying it's a bad idea, at all. I like having direction on what's wanted and where. But it doesn't address the core of the issue which is 'I feel intimidated by chargen'.

To me, this kind of thing is desirable but isn't what people are talking about when they talk about a roster. They want fully formed characters they can take off a rack and slip on like a prom dress.
