Later 2nd ed. patches and 3rd edition prints the dice right there next to the summary. You still get some folks doing a facepalm or whining or whatnot when they roll 15 dice and get no successes, but at least they're (usually) no longer crying foul at the system itself.

I was admittedly a little baffled by the combat system until @Seraphim73 walked me through a combat log.

And now I am gleefully learning how tactical combat in FS3 can be and it's kind of amazing. You can be a hyper-badass sniper and miss a lot. I love it.

MU dice commands ought to show every individual die's results.

This part I agree with, if for no other reason than I have seen dice code malfunction in weird ways. Having an extra layer of 'make sure all the moving parts are moving correctly' is good, and some systems have special rules based on how the dice come out. If you're going to generate the numbers, there really isn't a reason not to show the numbers generated.

They ought to also allow players to change the colours of their dice so you can do something of a virtual version of flinging a recalcitrant one away and digging out another.

This part I am not with you on. Jesus, players already get wild with eye-searing ansi in names and comtitles and stuff, can you imagine what kind of painful rainbow vomit we'd see if they could change the colors of everything and make other people see that shit too?

Better to just do this in your client.

I swear I played Greedfall for like three days and was no closer to a plot point than when I started.

Greedfall was what I wanted DA:I to be, except I got DA:I instead.

I mean, some of it was cool?

That fight at the docks was fun. But I found the combat to be kind of clunky and not as smooth or intuitive as I would like it to be, the companions were all kind of rigid, and I just couldn't figure out what the story was supposed to be. I got to the point where you

      ***Spoilers Duh***

      click to show

do the big fight in the ruined fort with the people and find the Jesus-But-Not mural

and was just -- completely lost because I apparently somehow missed something important somewhere that explains why that matters like, at all.

It probably doesn't help that I started playing it right after the new FF7 so my expectations were -- high. But I don't think it holds a candle to DA:I.

DA2 was my favorite also, though I never managed to finish Inquisition admittedly. I just finished Greedfall and I'm torn between playing it again (aaaaah so good!) or rounding back to DA2 - I've never done Mage and it sounds like I should!

Switch these for me. I swear I played Greedfall for like three days and was no closer to a plot point than when I started.

lol thus why I completely left DA:I out of the comparison. DA:I is to date my favorite game's combat.

      Woops, misread. My bad!

I honestly really preferred the more active combat style of DA2 over Origins, except that there just wasn't enough of it. I could've dealt with about twice as many encounters and been pretty happy.

I dunno, I thought Inquisition split the baby pretty well there. It's been my favorite combat game to date. Though I guess the DA:2 Rogue did somewhat really shine.

@Testament said in General Video Game Thread:

Narrative aside, I think my largest issue with DA2 was how dumbed down the combat was. Not that I have a problem with button mashing combat(I don't, I love Streets of Rage 4 on my Switch), but that's not what I expect out of a Dragon Age game. Where Origins was chunky and tactical in that Baldur's Gate(oh my god I love that game so much why can't Baldur's Gate 3 come out of alpha already), and Inquisition tried really hard to be some kind of combination of the two and not exactly hitting the mark(while also not totally missing it either).

The combat in DA:2 being different than the other two actually has something of a plausible explanation in that it's just Varric telling the story, and we still don't know if we got the real story.

ETA: That is, it plays like an over the top action game and not a straight-up tactical game like the other two because it's Varric telling an over-the-top action-based version of the story.

So I played Origins when it hit, skipped DA2 because I wasn't doing video games at the time it released, then played DA:I really heavily. I went back and played DA2 just within the last couple of months, and I am so, so, so, /so/ sad that it took me that long to play it. With everything I'd read I was ready to be underwhelmed but I feel like a- the story was REALLY good and made up for it being pretty light on combat, and b- it is REALLY really good at adding depth to DA:I. Like DA:I was the perfect game for me even without playing it, but playing it again AFTER Kirkwall added eleventy billion more layers to the shit that was going on.

      Also, Fenris > all.

(I had to put this here because I don't want to derail the other thread yet again)

I don't see how people can play Inquisition without 2.

Like... what did you think was even going on in the beginning?

@Ominous I like all of these, but especially the fae.

I would actually adore a changeling-only WoD game, getting more into the Courts and politicking. Entitlements, venturing into the Hedge, etc. Obviously with True Fae threats here and there.

Fate's Harvest was still open last time I checked.

Yeah, I'm really not sure. I'm not sure where the block is coming from, just based on that. If it's at your home device, for some reason, you would need administrator access to configure access, and if it's somewhere between you and the server you're connecting to, you're kind of screwed. 😞

I really wish that there was more than that to offer, but that's the long and short of it. If something is playing goalie, you need the power to make it play nice, and that doesn't come easy.

I mean, it sounds like it's a product of the network that you're on. Possible firewall activity blocking some ports? I'm really not sure how to diagnose that without detailed network stats, and even then I'm not sure what could be done about it.

Can you connect from your phone without wifi?

I didn’t grow up in a household with lots of books. My mother had one of those 356 stories and poems books that she would read to us every night but beyond that it was mostly library books. The first one I recall blowing my mind was the Rats of Nimh. There was also a book I read while still in primary school that I don’t recall the name of. It was a high fantasy one about a warrioress who would add a thin single braid to her hair for every person she killed. It had a cover heavy with purple. For a long time I wore a thin braid in my hair to remind myself to be badass.

You talking about the Chronicles of Kencyrath? Protagonist named Jame?

I'm sure as heck in no rush to get to hold all the things together to create my own game but if I ever do? I have thought about basing one off the free town of Fredericia, Denmark -- which historically had freedom of religion and asylum for any crime committed anywhere else since 1650. The result was a Wild West-like chaotic border town-feel, with half a dozen religious denominations and factions struggling for survival, hitmen and kidnappers from elsewhere hunting wanted men who in turn dared not step outside the city gates, a large military garrison constantly feuding with local land owners, and a plethora of absolutely over the top personalities and stories -- and it's all very well documented.

Then add, oh, and by the way, the magic of folklore of superstition is real, shake, and bake.

      I vote for this.

      Let's see.

Jane Yolen - Wizard's Hall: Like Harry Potter but with a less clueless protagonist, IIRC.

Christopher Pike - The Last Vampire series: Say what you want, but Sita is a pretty cool character.

V.C. Andrews - Flowers in the Attic Series: Look, I was a pretty advanced reader and I devoured this series. Even the prequel that everyone else hated.

Anne Rice - The Vampire Chronicles: Specifically I'd have to say my favorites are Tale of the Body Thief was Memnoch the Devil, just for the depth of the writing, even if she was starting to get into weirdly religious territory. The nature of his relationships with the other vampires, the way they change over those books, is powerful stuff, man.

    • RE: Interest in Cyberpunk MU*?

@Runescryer said in Interest in Cyberpunk MU*?:

@Wizz Cybernetics are already inherently expensive, A starting character can't afford very much in Cyberpunk, as opposed to Shadowrun.

And if you're worried about 'inherently gross', then, no offense, but Cyberpunk might not be the genre for you. We're talking about a literary genre where one of the major works, Hardwired, features a character who has an implanted Roto-Rooter in her throat with a targeting system. And she conducts an assassination of an 80+ year old man who had his consciousness transfered into the body of a 16 year old girl, by french kissing the target and unleashing the weapon, which tore all the way down 'her' throat, then buzzed around and pureed the major organs. That's not exactly 'light' subject matter.

What book is this? I wanna read it. Serious question, I love that kind of stuff.

ETA: Nevermind, reading fail. I see it now!
