RE: Web portals and scenes and grids oh my!
@faraday said in Web portals and scenes and grids oh my!:
@Derp It already shows time since last activity. The average is easily thrown off by outliers, so it's not really a reliable measure.
I know it shows time since last activity. Sorry, guess I should have clarified that it really needs an average to give them exactly what they want.
And I agree that outliers tjrow things off, bit it isn't necessarily more unreliable than a self-reported thing.
I don't think there is really a good way to do this but this at least seems easier than fully designing a pacing system that probably still won't please the ten people that see it as make-or-break.
Just a suggestion really.

RE: Web portals and scenes and grids oh my!
Instead of trying to arbitrarily come up with axes and such for scene timing, it seems that people really could be served by just showing "Time Since Last Activity" and "Average Time Between Activity".
Could even be like a 'pace' command for those that are determined to die on that hill.
Not sure it has to be so in depth just to fill a niche desire that is entirely subjective.

I am going to go off on the next non-resident of the greater Seattle area who tries to tell me that the city is a war zone/third world country.
While it lasted, the CHOP/CHAZ was a 6 block occupied zone in an 80 square mile urban sprawl.
I could drive into downtown Seattle this minute, take photos standing in various places, and show evidence that it's just fine.
NUH UH.
I played The Last of Us 2. I know better!

In Kentucky that is technically Menacing. You might have a hard time making it stick, though.
In Ohio, this is civil battery.
Here, it's just regular ol' battery.

I don't know if it is better to start with te minor version of whatever
NO. God no. Don't do this. It's a trap. And it's also unfun for other players because you will probably eventually want to
go in full tilt into the major one.
Which is what you should do from the jump. Do not, please, go into it thinking that you are going to start o ff with somethig minor and learn as you go, or worse, 'learn it all IC'. This doesn't work. It's been tried a hundred thousand times and ultimately it's the equivalent, RP-wise, of someone reading the book to you because they have a gun to their head because 'IC Duty' and man it sucks. It sucks so much. It really, really does, and every IC mentor gets burnt out and every IC student feels left behind. There are a few cases maybe where it worked better than others, but come in as a fully trained whatever and learn OOC, rather than a semi-whatever and learn as you go.
It sounds great on paper, but the delivery is terrible. Promise.
The second way is the much, much, infinitely better.

RE: Health and Wealth and GrownUp Stuff
@Wizz said in Health and Wealth and GrownUp Stuff:
I'm not sure that I do love it anymore. The books have had sentimental value to me because I grew up with them, but how I feel about them as an adult has changed a lot, and especially in the light of the author's views that I personally find hateful a lot of that fondness for them has dried up.
Also, I dunno, I wouldn't exactly compare a former fandom to a former religion. But if I'd gotten a bible verse or a cross, just speaking for myself I'd probably feel pretty strongly about altering or removing them too when I became an atheist.
I mean, you do you, but personally I don't think you can judge the value of a work by the character of its author, no matter how popular that seems to be in the cancel culture movement. If that were the case nobody would ever read anything at all. Most works considered to be masterpieces were written by authors with some serious problems by contemporary standards. Distinguishing one from the other is perfectly acceptable.

I still thankfully have a go-to for this:
"Pass the bar and work on gaining practical legal experience in the hopes of making a greater difference in my community."
Is it canned? Yes. Is it exactly the kind of bullshit they want? Yes.
I am firmly convinced this question only exists to determine whether you can think on your feet and engage in the sort of bullshitting that comes with office diplomacy.
Turnover is a real thing that people put into their models, you will never convince me this is truly a question about longevity.

Someone legit punched a great white shark.
Because apparently this is a real thing, and not just in a MU.

RE: How do you discover books?
I still use goodreads, but I look at lists rather than individual books. Something is bound to strike me. It's how I found Broken Empire and A Land Fit for Heroes.

or even FLOSS
I don't floss.
I honestly don't understand how people floss. Like -- are the spaces between your teeth big enough to get a little waxed string in without it shredding or getting stuck? How does it not hurt?
How do you freaks do that thing with a string and mouth-stones?
