@Jaded I'm not in the legal system, but I'd like to think whoever is deciding that case (judge, jury, wise old owl, whoever) not only throws it out but adds a few thousand dollars of "wasting the court's time" money.
I'd like to think that.

@dontpanda I expect most people wouldn't even recognize a wolf brother when they saw one, weird colored eyes, ok, weird, not WTFOMGBBQ!
In the books, people were usually considered outcasts - or at least they'd be looked at askance as possibly Darkfriends. There was that one dude in a cage, but I suspect it was because he'd gone feral. And it's not always helpful to go with the Whitecloaks' response to the unusual...
Anyway, I remember playing one and people were way too nonchalant about it. But that's also one of the ways playing as players taints the characters.
I played on Cuendillar a lot. Enjoyed it most of the time. The idea of another WoT game has my curiousity.
One small problem: It seemed that - on Cuendillar, at least - every gorram Aes Sedai was Black Ajah or wanting to be. That was annoying.
And while I know WoT is loaded with very special people and types, it really should have freaked more people out to see a Wolfbrother.
So, personally, I'd suggest keeping those two types of characters to an absolute minimum.
Also, moving the setting to elsewhere is very interesting. I'd even suggest south - Tear, Illian, Ghealdan, etc - and then you could make use of False Dragons, national rivalries and skirmishes, and Far Madding.
@Ganymede God I love/hated Sinister.
Like...that epic scene in Nic Cage's 8mm where they don't show what's happening on the snuff film, but they tell the story through watching Nic Cage's reactions...
I saw 8mm and had to ask my friend for a hug because I felt cold and dead inside. Like, more than usual.
Love the Fallout suggestion, but I've loved those games since Fallout 1 blew my mind.
I was going to suggest Mistborn by Brandon Sanderson, but the books resolved the major plot, so it would be hard to do well, I think.
I love the RPG Feng Shui. I haven't played Feng Shui 2, but I think this is a game I'd MU the ever-loving pants off of. It's a Hong Kong action movie, heavy on the description of the combat, with goals and metaplots. Wide array of character types, too.

@Jim-Nanban I totally forgot this argument was even happening.
Am I the "other fucktard?" I was busy considering what had been presented as an opposing view, which, unless I misremember, was precisely the reason I commented in the first place....
@Cupcake I totally agree. Nazi is a term we ought never apply to someone who doesn't deserve it, and that list doesn't include a great many awful people. They're awful, but not Nazis.
@HelloProject I appreciate the response. You were civil, which is disappointingly rare these days.
I don't have a heartless view toward others, I just think the government shouldn't be deciding how "generous" I am. I give generously to non-profits, so I don't espouse a "survival of the fittest" libertarianism.
If Sharon refused to sell clothes to men (contra "I sell women's clothing"), would she be in violation of human rights laws? If Amir refuses to bake a cake for a bar mitzvah, is that a violation? I'm not trying to ignore context, I'm trying to find the underlying true principle.
If I've missed the context, as you claim, then I'd love to have it explained. Do it by PM if you prefer and I'll honour that. If I've erred, it's important to me to know where I've made the error.
I've been trying to decide whether I speak into this topic or not. I usually don't, because I've found it rare that a conversation online ever actually results in the two people having their views adjusted. So, why bother saying something contrary to what the loud people are saying if it's likely going to cause those loud people to jump to insane conclusions about you?
But, whatever. Here I go.
I'm a much a libertarian as I can get away with. I want the government out of my life as much as possible. I have absolutely no problem with businesses discriminating against people for whatever reason they want, no matter how cockamamie or vile it seems to me. My belief is that businesses who get involved in that sort of behaviour find themselves either catering to a clientele who either supports or is indifferent to that policy, or out of business because no one wants to give them any money because of that practice. I've been discriminated against in the past, and just shrugged and moved on to find a business who wanted my money.
I think the spark that ignited the movie theatre debacle was that there appeared to be inconsistent standards applied. Where the theatre originally just had tickets for sale to a "women only" night, they weren't for a specific cause - it wasn't a closed event. So, the fellow bought a ticket because he's legally allowed to do so. Contrast that with bakeries who have been sued into the ground for not baking a cake for a same-sex wedding (for that specific event), and you see that there's an inconsistent standard. No one's suing Muslim-owned bakeries for doing the exact same thing (you can check Stephen Crowder's video on that topic - he might be a troll at times, but the video doesn't lie). No one's demanding that mosques allow them to have their rainbow flag-waving, bacon-laden wedding reception there, but churches are getting sued for that same practice.
If the movie theatre (Alamo, was it?) had started off with a "this is a private event," then that fellow would have no claim - private events are private. But because tickets were being sold to the general population, he's right to say that the state law prohibits discrimination based on gender, and no one can ask him to leave because of it. Is he trolling? - sure. Is he wrong? - I don't think so.
As I said before: I don't care what someone believes, as long as they behave civilly. Jason being called a Nazi because he hates Jews and loves Hitler is totally fine because, well, that's a Nazi. Susan being called a Nazi because she thinks marriage should be limited to heterosexual relationships is entirely another.
Well, I've stepped into it, I guess.
I'm no developer and mechanics of games confuse and scare me. I'm just a player who, either by unwitting choice or random luck, has played 3 very socially-adept characters in games where it should have mattered.
For clarity, I played Nydus (Master manipulator) and Teodor (diplomat and scholar) on Firan, and play Marius (diplomat) on Arx. This is why the topic's important to me - it's what most of my chars seem to be good at.
Here's my challenge: Let's say Nydus is trying to manipulate PC Jason to trust him into sharing a major secret. Nydus has all sorts of manipulation dice and scores a huge success against Jason's willpower or perception or whatever. But, there's no way to force Jason's player to actually type the words, "Jason murdered his sister and ate her eyeballs." What's worse, there's no way for me as the player to know whether Jason's player is revealing the actual secret.
It leads to a lot of calling in staffers, which no one should want.
I will say that I did score a major success with Nydus once on a character whose player was shocked since hers had high dice in willpower and the rest. But, she played the response well and shared the secret. I have tonnes of respect for players who actually do that.
Anyway, maybe I was helpful, maybe not. I'm intrigued to see what comes of this discussion.
Never mind. Apparently, the issue was that my computer's calendar had been changed to June 21. That's what was going on...
And now I feel dumb.
When I try to log in from my computer, I get the message "Session Mismatch. It looks like your login session is no longer active, or no longer matches with the server. Please refresh this page."
What in the world is wrong?
I've rebooted, cleared cache and cookies, tried other browsers, and I get nothing different.
Marius is sheeted as a diplomat (that he lacked skills when I took him notwithstanding), and I'd be completely in favour of a social combat system. Otherwise, why bother having those types?
If it's up to the other player whether their character is affected in a real way by my character's skills, then there's no reason for me to ever use them - the other person can just pose not being affected and I've wasted my time and xp
"because of identifiable patterns of ooc influence on people (particularly new players) that could be viewed as very manipulative."
From the bboard
@Admiral I decided I was tired of being accused of "mansplaining," so I demanded that the person not assume my gender, and decried the injustice of them doing so; it is assault and hate.
They fell all over themselves apologising and I never had to deal with their asinine complaints again.
@ThatGuyThere I'm a firm believer that I don't care what a person believes about anything, just about how they behave. If they want to believe bigoted things, I don't care one whit as long as they're not running around acting on those beliefs.
I have lots of beliefs that someone could say are <insert made-up negative adjective here>, and others have ones to which I object. But I can be civil, polite, even kind to people who are doing things I find morally objectionable because I'm not an animal running on instinct.
(Child molesters, however, can be drowned over the course of 3 weeks for all I care)
I behave this way towards others, and expect other people to behave this way towards me. Disagree with me, think me a bigot if you want, but treat me civilly and we'll be just fine.
@Catsmeow I fortunately don't get paid per appointment, but it's a major part of my job. So, if I don't have enough on my "List of Crap I did this Week" my boss wonders why not - as he should because that's part of his job and frankly I can use the help in making it a priority.
Anyway, just a complaint of mine.
I hate when people make appointments and "forget" that they've been made. Professionally, I mean - it's annoying in my personal life, but sometimes it happens and whatever. But my job is pretty dependent on making and keeping my appointments, and sometimes I have to say no to one because I've made a prior arrangement. When that one gets no-showed, I lose out on two opportunities.
Seriously, people... write it on your hand, if you don't know what a phone's calendar is for.
My throwaway email address is dontpander because I use it for secondary accounts when I don't feel like giving a second thought to taming down my language or attitude. And I like puns. Dontpanda sounds like someone's saying dontpander with an accent.
@Auspice Is your instructor giving you a final of F, or is the mark of F a placeholder until you show the actual work?
Most things done online will show times/dates of last updates. In theory, if you can file an appeal with the prof under the grounds that the system you were using locked you (and her) out of the project, though it was completed.
My cynical experience dealing with post-secondary education is this: if you appeal, you'll almost certainly win, especially if you continue to appeal it all the way up the chain. Eventually you'll get to someone who believes you shouldn't fail students because it gives the sadz, and you'll get the chance to show them your work.
Additionally, if you present information that describes the locking out phenomenon happening to other people (articles, etc), then the prof should be willing to at least hear you out.
I wish you the best of luck, though. Failing because of something outside of your control - and outside what a reasonable person could foresee happening - is awful.
