@apos Please don't make clothes a thing that affects anything else. I love the standard position that, "If someone's not wearing clothes, assume they're wearing clothes," because I really cannot be bothered to give a rat's backside about having the right coloured shirt under the proper style of pants.

Firan had "fashionable clothes." I hated every aspect of that. It just creates item bloat and yarg.

So, anyway, just my vote. I won't leave the game over it, but I'll be as irritated as if someone were doing the "I'm not touching you" thing siblings do to each other.

@derp The big-toothed zippered ones are what we have. Fantastic bags.

@arkandel I've bought some swiss army bags. They're great. Lots of room, super comfortable, price for me was about $45 CAD.

@aria I don't tend to make excuses for anyone's bad behaviour. I might try to explain their behaviour, but I offer excuses very, very rarely.

I appreciate that you see a difference between someone being a dickhead, and a systemic issue to be railed against. Not enough people do, I fear. It's letting dickheads get away with being dickheads because they're part of "the system."

Selling my house. The market in my neighbourhood is sort of weird. Got the pricing recommendation, and it's a range that we're really happy about - even if we had to choose the lowest number in the range, we'd still hit our target.

I'm excited for the opportunity for the new house, but I need to sell this one before that works. And I also need to have the buyer be cool with the idea they can't take possession until, like May. If they're pushy about it, I guess I'll move my small army of a family to my folks' place... and find a locker for all my stuff.

I don't get overly stressed about much, but this is doing it.

    • RE: Characters You Enjoyed Playing

I enjoyed most of the characters I've played, even if I look back and think I should have done everything differently.

I played Reese at Cuendillar a long time ago. I liked him. He became essentially a nihilist after feeling betrayed by the White Tower when he was a student. Became a mercenary who didn't care about anything or anyone except his own interests. I patterned him after Garak from DS9, and on Tyr, from Andromeda.

I made a character on Serenity... I loved the concept, even if I only played him three times. Don't remember his name - Reno, maybe?. He was a Shepherd who refused to hurt people. But he was a mountain of a man. I recall being on a PrP and pulling apart giant spiders with his bare hands. I would have liked to play him more.

Macklan @ Firan was another one I enjoyed. A womanizing carpenter. I liked making stuff, honestly, and he was such a cocky guy it was a nice departure from the sort of person I usually play. There was potential to make him less of an utter dirtbag, but then the game exploded and that was that.

I terminated someone with cause today. That sucks, even if I've done it a dozen times before.

I hated doing it, but it had to be done.

@surreality There's little comparison between what you describe and Hazmat, there.

Someone barging into your room without permission is no okay.

Someone showing up at your door without sending a request in triplicate is actually sort of a normal thing.

I mean, doing it even if they've been asked to not is a bit much, but screaming at them and then not speaking to them for a decade is wacky.

Woe betide the hapless sod who brings hazmat's burger with tomato when it was not wanted... table's getting flipped and server's getting stabbed with a fork.

@hazmat said in Real World Peeves, Disgruntlement, and Irks.:

@faceless My parents used to do this. Time and again, I told them, "Do not stop by unannounced." I told them in person, I told them on the phone, I told them in emails, multiple times. They would still show up. I finally snapped and yelled at them outside the husband's and my apartment. I was told I was a terrible daughter, agreed with them that I was, then stormed back inside and closed the door.

Didn't speak to them in person again for almost a decade afterward.

Do you think you're the hero in this story?

This sounds like a terrible, cautionary tale about not letting tiny irritations ruin potentially great things.

It's like you're living a version of Seinfeld, writ large.

@auspice Wouldn't there need to be some sort of posts to try and enlist all of MSB into any such plot for said plot to exist?

Anyone who's tried to get all of MSB to agree on - let alone sign up for and act upon - anything would laugh at the notion.

It's true. We'd all argue over a free lunch.

      Mr Rogers

      Exactly right.

There's a great twitter thread of a dude who ran into Mr Rogers in an elevator. You can read the thread here.

Beware of dusty rooms when you read it, though.

Unless you are Fred Rogers. That guy was the goddamn epitome of human morality.

True story. I love Fred Rogers and I try to watch/read biographies about him. From every account I can find, the man lived as selfless a life as humanly possible. Ever hear the story about when his Impala was stolen from the street in front of his apartment in Pittsburgh? It made the news, right, and the next day it was returned with a note saying effectively, "If we'd known this was Mr Rogers' car, we wouldn't have stolen it." Not even the Pope would get that consideration.

And here's the kicker: That's not even the end of the list of stories that couldn't possibly be true except it's Mr Rogers and they totally all are.

If Mr Rogers and Tim Tebow could have gotten together and started a foundation for the betterment of all mankind, the world would be unicorns and rainbows by now.

I'm trying to piece together all this Fahrenheit stuff... and it's needlessly difficult.

All y'all should just go metric. It's more precise, logical, and every other country in the world save three have done it without the sky falling on their heads.

      C'mon man...

    • RE: How should IC discrimination be handled?

@arkandel If you're going to have it in your game, but only directed at NPCs, then don't bother having it at all, I think. I don't play a game to interact with NPCs, so if a key flaw of my character is his hatred of people with blonde hair, it should come up with PCs for it to actually make an impact.

But, I DO think it's important to try to find ways to not close doors on other PCs. So, maybe all the blondes who want to join the crew have to "prove themselves" in way more ways than the brunettes, and even then might be eyed with suspicion or something.

I wonder if that's just something too many players forget; they're so busy making the game fun for themselves that they don't look for ways to engage other PCs, especially when it requires a modicum of thought and creativity.

    • RE: How should IC discrimination be handled?

@arkandel I played a bigoted character in the past and mostly did what you describe in the first example - looked uncomfortable and refused to acknowledge contributions by the people he was bigoted against. He did at times use IC insults, but I tried to keep those really rare, specifically because I didn't want to have people think I was OOCly just looking for the chance to be racist.

I also tried to combat the OOC hard feelings by being proactive with disclaimers and following up with concern for the people in the scene. I found a simple, "I just wanted to check on whether you're okay with that" went a long way to helping people separate the IC from the OOC.

I had someone who didn't take the IC stuff well. I asked someone we both knew to be my advocate, and we just decided that we could be OOCly good with each other, but he probably wouldn't be in a scene with me. It seemed like a good compromise.
