We are taking people through the process like any other player, yeah.
That being said, we won't be doing 'competition' for apps. If someone gets to a character first, they get the chance to app them first. Although we are willing to refuse applications based on if their pitches match or not the theme and vibe of our game, nobody on staff is willing to decide 'who loves/understands a character more than another player'. Even if players handle that superbly (which in our experience, most people do not) it is just so subjective and, quite frankly, unpleasant that we decided to go with the alternative.
Hey, guys! Just wanted to give an update before we start actually processing apps tmrw! Here's our current list of taken characters!

Okay, everyone, the address is mutantgenesismux.com and the port is 2017. Feel free to join us there, although the game will only actually open Monday or Tuesday! Join us, talk characters, etc.
Folks who asked for characters and sent pitches should have gotten their passwords. If I forgot anyone send me a message.
Updates:
We should be opening next week, Monday or Tuesday. Our coder still needs to test a few things, the wiki needs some ironing out, but we are all excited about it!
We might share the address earlier so people can connect, talk with us and each other, plan ahead of time before you can actually send your applications.
Responses and pitches have been amazing. Thanks everyone who sent one!
@ganymede All aboard, the more the merrier!
I've been getting lots of PMs from people, and so far we've had people express interest in the following characters, and I felt comfortable enough to let them lay claim:
X-Men: Bishop, Emma, Gambit, Iceman, Magik and Phoenix
Brotherhood: Domino, Exodus, Marvel Girl, Psylocke, Rogue, Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver
Undefined so far: X-23, lots of people, all OCs.
Great replies.
I want to touch on power levels a bit. As @Arkandel mentioned, there are only two instances where that is an actual concern, and both of those warrant a talk from staff if they become a constant with any player of our game. As we have plastered all over the wiki, sharing the fun is paramount in our game.
Likewise, most of the extremely powerful characters are getting hit with a friendly nerf bat to diminish (but not eliminate) power disparities. Most characters are younger in this timeline and are still learning themselves. Even Exodus, who is old af, is not the 'final boss' version you see in the comics, and he would have been been banned if the character didn't fit the theme so perfectly.
On to the relationship thing.
I am surprised at the responses. I was not expecting this to be so accepted, but I am thrilled to have been wrong about it. We will be pursuing that in Mutant Genesis and we promise to take all the care in the world to make it so the people who abuse it are caught and dealt with. No sense in eliminating a neat addition to the game because someone might try to abuse it.
We will get to it!
So, I was a little too fast to reply to @faraday. Expecting players to just pick up and continue /intimate/ IC relationships with players they don't know seemed a weird to me. I was the target of people pressuring me into doing such in my first MU, and it seemed obvious that any reinforcing of past relationships would be a terrible thing.
But there is something to be said about the impact it has on stories and continuity, those being our main focuses. We want these characters to feel like they belong to our game, to the players roleplaying them, and personal relationships are a huge part of storytelling. Even in actual comics, you see crazy stuff with people dating for a week or w/e and then moving on. And the fact that it DID happen adds a dynamic to things in the future, even after it ends. It gives the world another layer of credibility.
After discussing this with my staff last night, I wanted to put the idea forward and hear people's thoughts on the subject of not enforcing continuation of intimate connections, but maintaining they happened in the past. Should both parties agree to continue it, great. If not, your characters can break up. Their past would remain untouched.
It was pointed out that this idea is clearly not as appalling as my initial gut response led me to believe. After all, games like Firan and Arx operate with FC systems. If you app a married FC they're married. If you apped an FC and they had a secret @rel saying they got rolled with 3 Princes in a gangbang, well, that happened and it was part of your character's history. Maybe your version of the character was trying to be different, but it still happened.
Let me be clear, I'm female. I've staffed on games and seen behavior of stalker/predatory types. That is not going to be tolerated on any level in my game. We would not let this be used as a means to harass or bully new players into things, and we would take even a whisper of such a thing being done very seriously and there won't be much of a walk between that suspicion and a siteban. This sort of behavior has no place in our game.
But, the idea clearly works in other mediums. And hey, we in no way would expect players to continue relationships others established, but they would have still happened, and we think that does add a dynamic to the world and the characters. If Jean and Scott are dating, and Jean gets a new player, they continue that, or they can say they broke up and move on. She will be another woman with an ex, but with some story to boot. And it's not like it's even uncommon in the comics themselves.
What say you, people? It sounds strange to me, but I have warmed up about it. Need opinions!
@TNP Basically, what @Salty-Secrets has said!
@faraday The new person and you can certainly talk about it and set something up, but we are not going to force anyone to actually be friends/rivals/lovers of people they barely know. I know it sounds strange and I wish it could be different, but too often these pre-established relationships get weird on MUs. We just rather leave up to the players and, if any of the parties isn't good with it, that's it.
@phase-face This is a story-driven game, and we want players influencing the game through story. If the Brotherhood is being hunted down by the Avengers, the X-Men can choose to intervene to protect them, for example, or do their side of the plot. Maybe a X-Man slips to a SHIELD agent that Xavier's is the home of the X-Men, and that will have consequences too.
The idea is that the Brotherhood and the X-Men, although opposed in many ways, are still together in the 'we are all mutants' front. Our storytellers are here to provide the opposition, be in the form of the Avengers, Apocalypse, Marauders, Sublime or what have you.
In general, our plots will aim to provide both sides with different approaches that will have consequences if done one way or another. If players don't react, then we will provide an 'all things remaining constant' scenario and go from there. We want these ideologies, and how these characters live them, individually, to have an impact in the story. This is why the Pitch comes first. It is the most important step of the app process.
@phase-face Almost everyone who has talked to me is still on the fence and throwing ideas around, so these might not confirm, but between staff and the PMs I got today, we seem to have Emma and Phoenix (X-Men), Exodus and Magik (Brotherhood) and X-23 (Undecided). A lot of other names are floating around, which is awesome, and a couple of OCs were mentioned. We even have a volunteer to ST along with the rest of staff already, so things are picking up.
@wolfs We do have plans for the future, but only after we have built our main focus of the game, which is the Brotherhood and the X-Men!
@wolfs I think we are all there! We don't want you to suffer to play, we want players to be excited about their take on these characters.
@ghost The FC List is basically everyone save for a few bans. We have two restricted characters right now (Sabretooth and Juggernaut) which are restricted because they don't really don't give a damn about mutants to be involved, but if a player comes along and pitches us a nice idea for them that fits theme, like post-Sammy Marko, we could reconsider! So... basically anyone.
Wiki comes later tonight, probably!
@Wolfs It is meant to be simple, with a focus on your pitch for the character more than mechanics. We want to know what is your take, where you wanna take them, more than we want to know if you know whether Wolverine is faster than Cyclops or if you can copy/paste Comicvine good.
@ganymede We rather leave conflict resolution to players, as this is not a competitive game at all.
However, should players desire or the absolute need to leave it up to stats arise, we do use a sheet that, although not a comprehensive system like a WoD, does make use of dice and systems to solve simple disputes. This is meant to be a tool for people who like to roll dice with each other and add something to their plots and scenes, and not commonplace conflict resolution though.
