    • RE: Alternative Formats to MU

Let me try to get this back on track.

Query: What are 5 core functions or commands necessary or desired for a MUSH?

Next Query: For each of the 5 core functions, how would you envision them in a non-telnet (command line) UI format?

      I'll start this exercise.

      1. say/pose/emit

This is essentially the same command: you are projecting text that others in the same room can see. For a UI, I'd like to see a button that pops open a window you can type into. Once you're done typing the message, you click a button on the window somewhere that closes the window and projects the message on my main window (let's call it 'the Screen').

      2. moving/exits/rooms

Ideally, when moving from room to room, I'd like to see a description pop up on the Screen, which will also show who is in the room. I'd like to abandon the traditional exit-to-room-to-exit-to-room way most MUSHes use; instead, have a drop down list or new window of All Public Rooms, and simply pick which one you want to go to.

      3. bulletin boards

I like the idea of simply using forums. They are complex enough to handle any task that they are used on MUShes for. The end.

      4. mail

Something like a normal mail browser would be simple and easy to use, and appealing. Hell, you could just have people use Gmail, with the benefit of having functions like GoogleDocs and GoogleSchedule.

      5. generating a character

Honestly, the best way to do this is send some sort of document or form to staff, and let them generate the character for you. Using a wiki, you could set up a bunch of templates that people can select to start with, and just add additional freebie points or whatever to customize. All someone would have to do to make a character would be to point out which template they wanted, where to put the "free" points, and submit a request to staff.

      Just some ideas.

If a game where to implement these, or had a UI that could handle what limited UI functions I've mentioned, then I'd be more than interested in checking it out. We've already determined that I have no interest in learning to code everything up, but implementing these policies for a game might lower the barrier of entry into MUSH-style gaming considerably.

The bar exam consists of three parts, two of which are multiple choice, in most jurisdictions. The other part allows you to bullshit your way through a problem to convince the reader that you know how to argue.

Ain't got shit on trying to remember the differences between different D&D editions or dealing with the personalities that yap about them.

Mm-hmm. People around here are talking about how oppressive the Trump regime is. Or how there's an oppressive war of Christianity. And I'm like: "bitches, do you know who the Rohingya are?"

I get it. You like Christmas. Meanwhile, there are people getting shot in the open between a country that wants to purge them and another that doesn't want to let them in to escape the people trying to shoot them.

@Cobaltasaurus said in nWoD2.0 Support Code?:

What are some things people would like to see for a WoD game support code wise? Here are some things I have pending:

Darling, see if you can't port over some of the neat tricks @faraday has set up on BSG:U, which includes:

      • "repose": a command that allows you to call up the X number of recent poses, so that you can figure out what has happened without requesting reposes; very useful for sudden, unexpected disconnects.

      • "scene": this is currently being developed, but really needs to be widely distributed; it allows you to log the IC poses and @emits and rolls into a buffer, and then upload it into your wiki on command.

These commands are just --engh-- ground-breaking and awesome.

So when thinking about web-based alternatives, I think it's useful to think 'this could work like Gmail' or 'this would be great like google docs', but less useful to say 'just use google'.

This is all very true. When I say above "let's use Google," I more meant "I'd like my UI experience to be similar to Google's online junk, and maybe you could pluck some ideas from there as to what I, as a gamer, might like to have."

Except forums. Forums are awesome. Just great.

Mysteries of the abandoned you say... Hmm.

      Indeed.

I mean, it's a TLC or History Channel show, so it's got some annoying commentary and breaks for commercials, but it is getting me to look up these locations in Wikipedia for additional info, and that's really cool.

@tat said in Alternative Formats to MU:

I would add to your list:

      1. Private real-time communication between players

Really, there is no reason that mail and page can't be joined together. If you have persistent chat like in slack or google chat or facebook messenger, the difference becomes negligible. But I do think it's worth having the 'real time' addition.

      That's a good point. I like it.

      2. Conflict resolution

      3. The ability to improve/grow/adjust your sheet

I think this is system-sensitive. Lots of games employ consent or description-based stats, so I didn't think these were "core" functions.

      3. Logging/sharing scenes

Ares already has an impressive engine for this, but this is also a doo-dad. You can just as easily cut-and-paste what's on the Screen, which is what I had to do with zMUD.

@faraday said in Alternative Formats to MU:

      • Pages/Channels/Mail become Chat like Discord/Slack/etc. One’s just public and the other two are private.
      • Posing/OOC talk/Places are all just different ways to Add to a Scene.
      • BBoards become a Forum.
      • Grid/movement would be gone. Choosing/changing location is just an integral part of conducting a scene.

That's what I meant when I talked about a paradigm shift instead of just slapping a web UI onto the current MUSH commands.

This is probably what I meant to say in my first post, and is said much better.

And yes, there are members of the church, as well as stakeholders in Grand Canyon University, tied to the local Phoenix government. It's the Phoenix government who granted the eminent domain of the poor, low-income housing to provide inexpensive land for GCU to be built.

I don't know of any Catholic pastors who serve as members of local government. At least, not around my parts.

I went to a private, Catholic university for law school. It was run by Marianists. Even in the wake of the War in Afghanistan, the campus had a sizeable population of Muslims who regularly prayed in the central square in the afternoon.

Christians do a lot of disgusting things. Very offensive things. But many of the people Cajun Navy are Christian. I've found that, for every soul-crushing asshole that twists the Bible and the gullible, there are two decent Christians that are as welcoming as you could possibly imagine.

Even over here in Trump Central (according to Dave Chappelle), I know far more good Christians that love their LGBTQ friends and acquaintances, and abhor the Westboro Baptists and neo-Nazis.

As for eminent domain, it's one of the few things I split from many conservatives on.

I hear what you are saying, but I am saying that this kind of conflict is boring. Not to mention prevalent in our lives and distasteful in our pretendy-fun times.

Especially when there is so many other kinds of conflict to engage in.

Dayton is a surprisingly cosmopolitan burg. The community theatre is popping. It gets good touring shows (I'm seeing The Phantom of the Opera this weekend, and The Hunchback of Notre Dame is swinging through at the local equity theatre). And traffic is minimal.

Our major local gay club, The Masque, rivals places I've been to in Toronto.

It's also not particularly helpful, when people are trying to make a genuine appeal for practical and reasonable change, for one of the admins in question to treat the topic so flippantly.

Arkandel and Auspice can probably attest to the fact that I'm taking all of this very seriously, but what you point out as being flippant helps illustrate the point below.

@Ganymede, if you want a direct example of how differently you are treated than others are here, reflect for a moment on how @Auspice was treated in the previous discussion about administration on the forums when she made a similar remark. People practically demanded her head on a spike, that she be removed from the modcorps, etc.

And frankly -- and this is aimed at surreality -- please don't presume that I don't appreciate, understand, or notice that a few people here get treated like garbage on the regular whereas I can pretty much act like Uncle Ruckus, and folks just look the other way. It does not always come out in my responses, but let me state, for the record, that I understand some people are treated differently. I pay attention to it, and, if you don't believe me, talk to Arkandel and Auspice. (Some of y'all may, in fact, remember that I jumped into a thread to point this out in the Hog Pit, and the general consensus was that I "get away" with behaviors that others get shit on for.)

Here is a short list of issues I'm perceiving as "primary" issues regarding consistency, which seems to be the overarching area of concern.

First, where there are multiple moderators there will be multiple interpretations as to each rule. Our justice system is rife with this problem. You can set up a rule that seems as plain as day, and two people may see it differently under a certain set of circumstances. If you want consistency, having a single "judge" of behavior means more consistency (presuming that such person rules the same way under the same circumstances), or at least ease in pointing out inconsistency.

Second, even presuming a perfect rule to determine whether behavior is acceptable or not, the next issue is the result. What punishment is fair? What punishment is unfair? What degrees of separation exist between a simple, private warning and a permanent ban? And what circumstances or considerations should be made when determining which degree of punishment is appropriate?

Finally, if a person thinks the punishment is unfair, where do they go to seek a reversal or justice for such an action? Absent a ban, the forum itself is a pretty good place to protest, and it is all too tempting to do it ... and maybe get back into hot water.

Right now, the three of us work fairly independently, but confer together before and after decisions and actions, as needed. In a way, this is good because that means three sets of eyes potentially monitoring the forum. But the membership has reacted differently to decisions depending on who makes them, and I believe this has had an effect on how we do things.
