    • RE: #WIDWW pt 2 - ST, Player, or staff?

      @thatonedude said in #WIDWW pt 2 - ST, Player, or staff?:

      Problems with Staff/Player interactions is perception, attitude, and intent. Maybe that sentence should be the perception of attitude and intent.

      If a player decided by fiat to roll a pool into a +job requesting information and then told me what they should get and how it is to be delivered, I would perceive that the player felt entitled to shit and intended to be a prick about it.

      ST: So, you enter the office. What do you do?
      PL: I'm going to look around to figure out how he is going to rig the election. Here's my Investigation roll, where I get 3 successes. Now, tell me every intricacy of that plan.
      ST: ... this is the janitor's office.

    • RE: Why did you pick your username?

      Ganymede is the identity Rosalind adopts when living in the Forest of Arden in As You Like It. It was also the name of an alt of mine on Due Rewards.

      There are other reasons I like the name:

      1. I used to play Amber: The Diceless RPG, which is based on Zelazny's The Chronicles of Amber. That series makes use of the Forest of Arden as a boundary between the mundane world and Amber.

      2. I really like As You Like It.

      3. Ganymede, as a character, is very interesting, being a young male character played by a female character who, in Shakespeare's day, would have been played by a young man who no doubt was being pandered to and groomed by older men.

      4. I like Greek mythology.

      5. I like space.

      Just in case anyone that I couldn't be geekier, right?

      Is free speech by others making you feel very unwelcome? If so, what would be your suggested solution?

      This feels like a bait-and-switch question.

      I agree with Templari, but I will point out that Tyche still hangs around and that motherfucker doesn't shut the fuck up about his point of view. Which I appreciate because, you know, some of us just don't shut the fuck up about how we lean, myself included.

      Flying off the handle seems to be the way that the world works, lemme tell you what. I don't know what that opposing counsel wanted when I calmly told him my offer to settle, but it sure didn't make me want to work with him any more.

      I don't like being called an SJW. That term, to me, is dismissively pejorative. And I'm not the best, recent example of not being inflammatory for the sake of rhetoric, but if we all tried to lean in that direction, it'd be a nice culture shift.

      It sounds like Daffy's had a great life.

      My cat did as well. When I learned about the absolutely-wretched suffering he was going to, I cried a lot because he had been suffering for months but still went out of his way to be the cuddliest lap kitten he could. But this is about you and your loved one.

      The only advice I have is that choosing when the suffering ends is your greatest gift.

      You have to understand how silly this question is, right?

      Not really.

      I mean, here, you're just asking unresponsive questions in response to questions. You're responding for the sake of responding, under the belief that such a response is adding anything.

      Maybe you do not understand how fucking exhausting it can be to be dogpiled. Maybe you do not understand how exhausting it is to repeat the same message over and over because other people are shifting the conversation. Or maybe you do not empathize with someone who has clearly been gaslit.

      It doesn't really matter.

      If you don't see how or why posting and not adding to the conversation in a mildly constructive forum can be a problem, that's fine.

      @Silver said:

      ... and I think the very subject is being questioned from the wrong perspective.

      This is the most important thing you said. If the conversation were made simpler, the opinions would be argued with greater clarity.

      The "Unfindable" flag for a CharObject makes it difficult or impossible to determine where the PC on the Grid. It doesn't prevent harassment on channel, page, @mail, or otherwise. If you want a quick fix, there are other commands to prevent being communicated at without consent. If you want to address harassment, go to staff; that's their fucking job.

      That flag also makes it difficult for people you don't know to find and interact with your PC. If this is because you want to RP through a scene with others uninterrupted, then you can get a +temproom, if those are permitted, or tell people coming in to fucking go away. If intervening PCs throw up the old "it's a public place" bullshit, go elsewhere and pretend you're back at that place at which the scene was to unfold. If you don't want to be contacted ICly, then go OOC or disconnect.

      The reasons for why people employ the flag are myriad, but the effect is basic. As far as I can tell, it's a pointless device.

      @cassite

      I have moved many of the posts over to the Politics section. I left the portion of the thread where we discussed whether it was permissible to celebrate someone's death.

      It is permissible.

      In the case of one Rush Limbaugh, the reason I believe some people are elated is because the man celebrated the deaths of LGBTQ members to AIDS, among other things. This smells political, and I think people would rather have such political matters moved elsewhere.

      So, I moved them.

      @arkandel said in Social Stats in the World of Darkness:

      I'd be willing to bet big internet bucks the major reason social powers are so rarely even attempted on PCs is the potential for headaches following it.

      Maybe it's just the circles you run with, but I can attest that social powers and rolls have been directed at me quite frequently. Strangely, more often on games without robust social systems, like games using FS3.

      The use of social powers in the World of Darkness is amusing and fun if you don't take them too seriously. This is a culture thing that isn't going to be solved by a more robust social combat system.

      But if one is provided, the outcomes should be clearer. Enforcing the rules should not be something that staff shies away from either.

      So while evidence of rule-breaking is important, we as staff/runners/people do have to be aware that different people will digest different levels of abuse differently.

      This.

      There is no one standard. Staff will employ what standards they are comfortable with. No one is owed a uniform standard of proof or process. Some will demand more evidence than others.

      And that’s okay.

      No one in the world has ever done anything without bias.

      Thank you, Polonius, but I did not say otherwise. I said:

      • If you want to play, then play;
      • If you want to staff, then staff;
      • But if you staff, people are going to expect you to play without bias; and
      • If you are perceived as having bias then you should no longer staff.

      Sure, bias is inescapable; however, we can expect others to play without it and to accuse us of having it if we make a poor choice.
