Just thoughts on helping build culture/design, I could be completely wrong or in left field by myself.

Preferences based on experience, personality, or other traits are never wrong. Caring about other players, empathizing with their limitations and/or needs, and adjusting accordingly is far more important in a game's culture, and I don't think that can be legislated or coded.

    • RE: Places Code Pros and Cons

I am a huge fan with the places code that was traditionally installed in things like MIAM.

It is a great way to simulate having a small, private conversation in a larger scene. It allows more activity in a larger group where one person may be leading a meeting, and others are in their places chatting amongst themselves. It keeps the level of chatter down while allowing folks to basically do more RP amongst themselves. I think that's a good thing.

I'd like to think it can be expanded in a way to facilitate GMing, but I haven't thought how we could use existing code to do so.

I am allergic to cats; not badly, but enough.

I have a kitty nuzzling my head and hair incessantly.

My eyes are watering and swelling up, but I don’t care.

I will hit anaphylaxis before I move.

      How about this?

OC supers, but they are the way they are because they are escaped dreams and nightmares. Played in the Sandman mythology. Every OC has to identify with a particular dream or nightmare, and have a power set to match.

If you can code, I can write.

I definitely have wish fulfillment in my RP. Most of them are violent sociopaths. “Little Ball of Hate” is what I aspire to.

But they are more successful at it, with fewer consequences, than I am RL.

Frodo, in large part, is literally just the Ringbearer. Things are done to and around him.

I don't find Legolas dynamic at all; rather he, like Gimli, are caricatures and tropes. Rather, like the other hobbits, Frodo undergoes a profound change from the start to the finish, and, to me, that's more interesting to read in the books and watch on the screen.

And that is also by calculation. I agree that Tolkien uses Frodo as the vehicle to carry the story forward. But I didn't find him static and he wasn't a husk to me.

Elves are boring as fuck, but pretty to look at. By calculation, of course.

I have found that there are plenty of DK poster children in the profession. Imposter syndrome only affects people willing to consider that they might be wrong.

      This is true. Very true.

Okay, so among good and reputable lawyers you can trust, imposter syndrome is more common.

That laundry list of "other" features are the features that I enjoy. Advanced age means that I forget commands and who's playing who on a regular basis. Knowing that my scenes are auto-logged, that I have different commands to do the same thing, and that I can figure out who I like to play with easily really helps the old farts like me.

Those as the laws of Texas, and people in Texas are fucking crazy.

As a corporate counsel -- yes, I advise companies on HR matters -- all that matters is that unwanted touching constitutes civil battery in most jurisdictions and is almost always concerning in cases involving hostile work environments.

As a cat, though, just don't fucking touch people if they tell you not to. It's really fucking simple to me.

Just like - wtf is wrong with everything right now.

In sports news, the Brooklyn Nets recently issued a statement regarding the un-vaccinated state of one of their star players, Kyrie Irving. The Nets have said that they will not let anyone participate in games or practices who wasn't a "full-time" participant in all activities. Mr. Irving is unvaccinated and therefore cannot play at home games in Brooklyn, meaning that he would essentially be "part-time" as a player who can only play in away games. Mr. Irving makes around $33M per year under his contract, but his employer has made it clear that he will not be with them unless he gets vaccinated.

We are at a point where a player in a team game making $33M annually won't get a fucking vaccination to play sportsball.

The absurd level of stupidity cuts through all classes. No one wants to give a shit about others. Some people will give up millions of dollars to play a sport based on shit they find on the internet.

Like any business, a good school runs on a team approach. Teachers that refuse to vaccinate are not good team players. They should be cut and the blame for that cut should be placed squarely on them.

It's illegal to deny people housing for being LGBTQ in my state, but when my landlady figured it out she just started accusing me of doing weird shit, and there wasn't anything I could prove besides 'this happened after she learned...'.

In Ohio, you can take your complaint to the Ohio Civil Rights Commission or your local fair housing society. You don't have to wait until an eviction until you bring up this shit.

If you have similar outlets, I'd suggest contacting them once your landlord accuses you of weird shit. Because win-or-lose, if a landlord attempts to file an eviction action after it smells retaliatory.

And frankly, it's stupid. I had a landlord client complain to be me about the lesbians in one of his units. The dialogue went something like this:

Landlord: I have nothing against them, but I just don't want to lease to them.
Me: Is it against your religion?
      Landlord: Yes! Yes, it is.
Me: Okay. Are they ever late?
      Landlord: With their rent? No.
Me: Do they make a disturbance?
Landlord: No, they usually mind their own.
      Me: Parties? Drugs?
      Landlord: None.
Me: Would you be willing to give them three months to vacate so I can put them into one of my units? Because they sound like really good tenants, not like those of this other client I had, let me tell you --

And after 5 minutes of telling that landlord about my other client's nightmare, he amazingly became more tolerant.

Anyhow, frankly, I listen to my employees. Always. If someone said "so-and-so keeps touching me and I don't like it" then So-and-So is likely looking for a new job. This is neither harsh nor heroic; this is self-preservation. I won't let my firm go down to some stupid-ass motherfucker who is too hand-sy, and if it is one of my partners I am not afraid to tell them not to fucking do that. Thank goodness I have a couple of women partners who have been in the business a while and have the reputation of not taking shit from no one.

So uh, I kinda hate the new Ghostbusters movie? And I feel like the only thing that they would have had to change for me to like would be to not make it a Ghostbusters movie, just make it a Cthulhu movie with a cheeky wink-wink Ghostbusters reference here and there.

I loved the new Ghostbusters movie. I was in tears, but I have a soft spot for the franchise and very bright girls with social issues.

I didn't need them to say anything to understand. I live with a girl like that every day. She liked the movie, I think. And then she went to go see Wicked with my partner the next day.

Still one of my favorite movies of the year. Paul Rudd effortlessly carries humor with him. Olivia Wilde is perfect for her small role. I can't say I understand why you didn't like it or the analogy you made because if I could put the cast of Seinfeld into a murderhouse I would because I hated Seinfeld.

@greenflashlight said in Movie / TV / Streaming Peeves or Whatever:

May I ask what you see it as?

I look at the movie as a "scientists were right" flick.

You said before that the original Ghostbusters story involved four blue-collar schmucks who saved the world, but I disagree. Three of them fit (and are) three main academic stereotypes: (1) the poser (Peter); (2) the know-it-all (Ray); and (3) the savant (Egon). They believe they know better so they start this bizarre business service that everyone is skeptical of until it proves to be true in the vein of other 80s services, like psychics and mediums, which were prevalent and mocked back then.

This is evident from the beginning. We are introduced to Peter as he uses his advanced degree to flirt with hot college girls; Ray is the busy-body spouting off his theories; and Egon eccentrically gathers the evidence and builds the machinery. All of them are parapsychologist professors at Columbia University. Once they manage to get their business set up, they hire a blue-collared person (Winston) who is willing to take a risk because this is the 80s and everyone needs a job. In the end, Winston is pivotal as the "everyman" figure that follows along because that's his job.

There are a lot of articles about how critics found the film. Some found it a satire on academia and Reaganomics, but I think that is deeper than what was intended. It ultimately is a story about how the people who believe in the bizarre prove they are right. But I really liked how each of the characters had their specific place: Ray is needed for his enthusiasm and energy; Egon is needed for his vision and brains; Peter is needed to engage socially with a doubtful public; and Winston lends the credibility that comes from being the "everyman" among the nerds.

And that's why I think Ghostbusters: Afterlife follows.
