      Me: Fine. Whatever.

      Let me help you here.

Me: Why did you tell her that? I took a vacation day off to hang with you. I don't recall you being this inconsiderate in the past, but I'm going to hold you to your commitment. I'm going to come by in about 15 minutes. I don't care if she's there, or if she stays at your place, but I don't feel like hanging with her.

People who use "That's cool with you, right?" piss the fuck out of me. I don't have time for that shit. Friends don't blow friends off who take vacation days to hang with them, even if this girl can suck dick/east pussy/fuck/take it in the ass like a champ.

      End of story.

      What Sunny said.

I think what we're saying is that we think you should leave too, and if or when you do we'll still be here, no matter your choice.

We're just asking you to choose yourself rather than others this time.

      It bears saying once more:

you are worth more than you

So, if I look at the events depicted in the episode less as a representation of truth and more as a mirror that contains multiple clashing paradigms in an almost ironic way, it's a lot more interesting (and forgivable for its dramatic edginess).

I want to interject only to put my own comments in on the "edginess" of that episode.

For 1989, the story isn't "edgy": it's Orwellian-provocative. All of what I believe most people deride as "unnecessarily edgy" was at some point novel and, with this story, we are viewing one of the very first of such darkness in a modern fantasy setting. I have often derided works as being "edgy for the sake of edginess" when what I mean to say is "this has been done before and therefore has lost its edge in my experience."

Tritely, when my partner watched the series with me, her first comment was "looks like they really wanted to borrow from Twilight" and it was all I could do not to choke her.

My neighbors are kvetching about our public school bussing.

The busses regularly come and deliver the kids 5 to 30 minutes late. The district is so short on bus drivers that school board members and teachers have been doing it. I feel bad for the kids.

I don’t feel bad for the parents. At all. They complain about the real property taxes, most of which fund our schools, but then bitch about short staffing. As if they aren’t completely linked.

      @surreality said in Original Sci-Fi?:

The behavior exists everywhere. The difference is that I've not seen people call it out as elitist or 'theme dictator'ing in sci-fi. I do see that in other genres, though, and it's a difference that makes a potent... uh, difference.

To you, perhaps, but I've seen a lot of "theme dictatoring" in sci-fi games, and less in fantasy-history games.

I mean, far be it for me to want some consistent theme in Changeling: the Lost, wtf, right?

To that end, though, so what? If staff or players are telling me things that my PC should or should not be doing on BSG:U, that's fine. I would be the first to tell you that my grasp on the setting isn't the best. And I'll have a healthy debate when it comes to WoD Vampire spheres.

To me, folks that toss around "oh you're wrong-funning me" liberally do so because they can't be bothered to actually think about what they are doing. It's often a dismissal of a reasonable attempt to keep a uniform or consistent theme, and, frankly, I don't expect staff to tolerate it.

      How about, instead, actually listening?

It's probably best just to wait and see until folks have had the chance to calm down and think about things before anyone makes any assumptions about what that should or shouldn't look like. Discussing/arguing it now is rather putting the cart before the horse, I think.

I would prefer this as well.

There was a past thread almost 5 years ago that discussed this matter extensively. It was a very vigorous and emotional debate. I suspect this is one of the many things that must be discussed again.

But as one of the mods has requested some time off, the debate and action will not be forthcoming. I think there are other options to explore, and I will discuss with Derp after the weekend, as he's the one with the most knowledge of how this place works (between us).

To be frank, I think M&M 3E may be a bit too "crunchy" for my tastes, but I may be in the minority. You should use whatever system you feel best represents the kind of atmosphere you want for your game and player base.

    • RE: Mass Effect MU*?

      Arise, chicken.

I've run my homebrew system backwards and forwards, and there's nothing to it that can't be done more efficiently with FS3.

So, I'm scrapping the homebrew and proposing a Mass Effect game using FS3.

I'll probably talk with Kraken @ The 8th Sea and the legendary Faraday to see if I can look and decipher the coding, in anticipation of doing some tweaks to the FS3 combat engine. But the one thing I will probably have to have coded from scratch is an engine/code-set that will help me track the IC population's assets and resources.

      Let me explain.

The story begins on a planet in the Terminus System, where all of the PCs belong to a small shipping company. Times are lean, so the company occasionally takes black missions to help mercenary groups, the Alliance, or whoever will pay them to move stuff. But then, things go to shit when the Reapers start appearing. And within a few cycles, chaos reigns. What will the company do?

Plots will center around survival and exploitation in the far reaches of civilized space while the home worlds are in shambles. Sink or swim, the company has to fend against other companies and pirates, while taking advantage of opportunities that arise. Completing plots will result in obtaining resources and credits that can be crafted or traded into assets.

Players individually can contribute to the success of the company outside of plots. Every cycle brings delivers Action Points that can be spent to do things that benefit the company. Those Action Points can also be used to gain XP to improve your PC, although it still takes considerable time to do so (under FS3's system). The Action Points system is intended to be a mini-game that ties into the success of the company, and thus the PC-base.

The key is resource management for the company. That's what I need to have coded, and I don't know how well it would work. This is a bit of an experiment as well because, if successful, I can see how the "community" engine/code-bit could be used for other games.

Any volunteers? Thenomain, I'm looking at you.

@arkandel said in How can we incentivize IC failure?:

There's a gap here I'm not sure is being bridged.

I don't think there's a gap in all responses, especially mine.

We are talking about two things, though. Some of us are discussing whether there are mechanics that can reward failure or reward players for voluntarily failing. Others are discussing whether there can or should be rewards for failures decided by staff/GMs. Some are talking about both.

But the overarching issue is how to convince players that failure is not only possible, but possibly rewarding in its own right. Mechanics that reward failure or ameliorate failure mean nothing if the players still react negatively to failure. So, for me, and some others, this is a culture issue, one that is not going to be solved by mechanics or policy or without staff and players willing to buy in.

@faraday said in Big city grids - likes and dislikes:

Because when I made the first grid for BSG:Pacifica I thought it would be a fun persistent "hangout" location based on how often it actually came up in the show. Then people actually used it and it kind of became 'a thing' on Battlestar games that followed.

      Right. I get that.

So, who gets to determine if a location is a fun, persistent "hangout"? The firing range didn't get nearly as much fun-time as Erin's bunk, trust me. And that was very much a hangout, along with Charlie's. But we had a firing range because you put one in.

I think, maybe, what some gamers like is, on an OOC level, the idea of having some sort of IC "hangout", as a concept, that's permanently stuck on the Grid. And since the early days of yore, players have wanted these for their PCs. Thus, they like to @dig rooms, and thereby make their mark for future generations.

I dunno, I'm just speculating at this point.

Dunno. I've been MUSHing since the early '90s so... that's pretty old too.

So that's the problem! Lemme get some Ben-Gay for you, it'll be all better.

      Uh. We get new players.

I know several who are brand new to MU*'s. I myself have brought new people into the game.

      I concur.

I am enjoying a lot of the discussion here between developers that clearly have a lot of ideas, experience, and skill. And I like the discussion about how the medium could be updated.

But we also need to do what Lithium is doing, and we need to make sure our gaming environment is as helpful and welcoming as possible. Not that games don't do this, but, let's face it, we've all been on games where people seem loathe to actually help people.

That's a topic for another day. But, as one of the old farts around here, I ain't afraid of no new platform, bitches, so you best get going on that shit.

@faraday said in How can we incentivize IC failure?:

FS3 combat is a good example of why I don't think the question of game and story has to be either/or. It exists not because of a "game first" mentality, but just because it's nigh-impossible to do a wholly cooperative combat scene with a dozen players in a tolerable timeframe. It's a tool of convenience, nothing more. Rolls can be similar - two players could just RP a sparring match, or they could throw in a few rolls to add some chance and/or guidance for how things go. You can do both.

FS3 combat is also a good way for my PCs to get their crotches destroyed.

Yes, there are stories behind that.

Anyhow, I've nothing further to add at this point. I adore FS3 combat.

    • RE: Earning stuff

      @arkandel said in Earning stuff:

There's are some IC candidates for the position, none of them a clear forerunner but there's interest in the vacancy. Then a new person, OOC friend of the Captain's and known by staff creates a new character and voila, that PC is handed the keys to the Captaincy.

Poe was really angry when Vice Admiral Amilyn Holdo took over the Resistance. Sure, she was a friend of Leia's and had some success in the field, but she didn't earn the command of the Raddus. But that tension is an important part of The Last Jedi, and plays itself out well.

Staff should always give the keys to someone they trust. This is much, much more important than someone earning the keys. In a military game, it should surprise no one that someone comes in to take command of a unit that was not part of that unit to begin with. But if the new PC is a trusted someone, then staff really needs to trust them to step into a game and take over where resistance is to be expected.

I'm over the idea of "earning" something IC, and everyone else ought to be as well. Play the damn game.
