      @ominous

You can assume what you want, or you can actually read what I wrote.

If I only have four sandwiches to give, I have to be selective about who I give them too. Am I to be blamed if I give them to my friends? They like my sandwiches. They may tell others how awesome my sandwiches are. And others may want my sandwiches, but I can only make four.

The problem I have with the potluck analogy is that it does not take into consideration what people can give. It implies that you should bring something to a game, and I agree, but where I disagree is where and how people judge others based on what they can bring.

If four sandwiches are not enough, that’s fine.
Just be up front about that. And then I will take my sandwiches elsewhere.

Above all things players like feeling wanted.

But again you are presuming that I can bring more than four sandwiches at any time.

I mean, if you had a weekly potluck at which I brought only four sandwiches each time, and you elect to take me off the invite list regardless of how good those sandwiches are or how much people enjoy them, then that’s fine. I will stop coming around probably before I’m disinvited.

As long as you are up front about excluding people who can only regularly bring four sandwiches and accept that reputation, I have no objection.

I don’t because it presumes I can afford more than four sandwiches.

If that’s all I got? That’s all I got. If you want to exclude me from the pot luck, so be it, but if there are others hauling in the goods, what’s the problem?

And that while they grew up with games that could be paused and saved or the ability to avoid characters that are annoying... mom grew up with games that HAD to be won in a single run, and that damned dog snickering every 90 seconds.

I can't wait for the day they try to challenge me in fencing or archery, then.

Today is the day I bought the Switch.

Today is the day I schooled my children horribly at Mario Kart 64.

Today is the day they learned that if you take yourself as a serious gamer at age 8, you may end up crying at the end of the day.

I'd feel more guilty if the boy wasn't crowing about having mad skills and being an O.G. at Street Fighter 2.

Today is the day I comforted my boy for not being as good as me at Street Fighter.

But I feel no guilty at all.

Is it nice to help Jane have fun? Sure. Is it good for the game when people do it? Sure. But that's a very different argument than saying I'm "responsible" for it.

That's how I read it too.

I think, Tinuviel, that when you said "responsible for everyone else's fun" you meant "don't shit on other people who are trying to have fun." I took it to mean that, so both you and Derp's positions reconciled. That's where I fit.

I don't have much time. I like to play with friends. I'll try to accommodate where I can. Ultimately, as long as I'm not shitting on other people's fun, I think I'm okay.

For those in the industry, or those who love theatre, Sondheim was bar none the most important composer of the second half of the 20th Century.

When I was dating my partner, I often remarked with friends how she liked Andrew Lloyd Webber and KISS, whereas I liked Sondheim and Led Zeppelin. I was reminded of this because, over the years, we have grown to love the differences and each other.

Sondheim was brilliant and beautiful, and the thing I love most about his music is that it is complex and wonderfully atonal.

In my line of work, the brilliant jerk often becomes a victim of his own brilliance because many of us in practice have been victimized by the same in prior lives.

It’s fun to sit in mediations where everyone, even opposing parties, cracks at the jerk and resolves things in a way that either cut him out or disadvantage his client.

So, no. This is not on staff, even if they point you toward that role. They cannot make RP for you, they cannot predict whether you will play the role in a compelling way, and they cannot force people to play together who don't want to play together.

      I concur.

I recently applied for a character role that was needed. I love the character. I have a point to exist, and I know that staff has been encouraging interaction with my PC and other players' PCs. But it simply has not worked out, schedule-wise, and I have not met everyone I probably need to in order to kick-off the plot that staff has planned.

      But that's not staff's fault.

This is why when I have been asked on Arx what we 'need', I just tell the player to pick something that sounds fun. I don't like that question because it feels like it comes with an expectation that RP is just going to drop in that player's lap if they choose this specific role.

I honestly wish that staff would tell me what is needed because I am bright enough to create a concept that: (1) fits the niche; and (2) I would enjoy playing. This is how Piccola came to be.

Like, thanks for being the one person who consistently respects my pronouns? That's cool? But it would also be great if you didn't cut me out of things we're supposed to be working on together and then talk down to me about everything from my work skillset to hobbies I've been participating in longer than you've been alive, thanks.

I do love the snotty youth, but it's more tolerable than the snotty elderly.

Try reaching out to the nearest branch of your state office of civil rights. You can file a complaint there for free that will trigger an investigation. If there’s enough evidence, the state will use an attorney general to handle your case.

If staff does not intend to service a particular concept, then they shouldn’t allow that concept as a PC.

It is an easy fix for this problem.
