@L-B-Heuschkel As a fellow Scandinavian I agree this is bizarre, for the same reasons.

RE: Diversity Representation in MU*ing
@HelloProject It's just a small thing in the grand scope of things, but many small things combine to something big - and I'm hoping I will be - and am - one of those that contribute, and try to learn more day after day.
I can say with some shame I used to be ignorant about MANY things related to it all, and white priviledge. Over the years I've gotten more and more aware of my own biases and how I've been just not looking things up or trying to understand.
Either or, the thing I was coming to was that on Arx, I play a PoC - undefined in a manner, but definitely PoC, which when I picked the character up, due to his desc being vague on it, I /never even considered/. I immediately looked for pictures I enjoyed, and ANYTHING that came up, was indeed, white males. I belatedly had a conversation with one of his IC relatives, his cousin, who had a PoC desc/picture, and I had that unsure feeling of whether I should change or not, and decided NOT to at the time.
I decided to change his PB now, and oh boy - you're right. There's no reliable way of searching. If you search for black swordsman you do indeed get something else entirely. It should ABSOLUTELY be as you describe, and it annoyed the fuck out of me, and I mean, I'm as pasty white as it gets, and it gave me an eye-opener. Another one.
Either or, I did find a nice picture. My character is not black, but a PoC anyway (also I do feel a bit unsure about terminology, I am not American and I don't mean any offense if I chose the wrong words, feel free to educate me if I'm being dumb.) A picture that I am chuffed to bits about, that fits the character description perfectly. (Also to be sure you understand, he is not described as black - but black hair, dark olive skin.)

RE: The Work Thread
Had a call from my boss yesterday. I got 2 weeks vacation, she wanted to check if I could work alone on monday when I start again - usually we're 2, but if it's a normal day, one person can handle it (and I can get help from some others if it gets hairy, even if they don't do that normally they can go into the system and help out the basic stuff). So I said, sure, no problem. Short-staffed that day, and that is the first time I've had to be alone, so it's all good. I asked if she knew more about the fall since my contract only lasts till end of September. And she said right then 'Oh yes, we want to extend your contract till the end of the year - to start with.'
Freaking awesome. Three more months of work, and it looks hopeful for more after that. I love this job and I wanna stay there.

RE: Atticus' Playlist
@Atticus Best tip I can give you - read up on your house's story and ask them for the brief (if you chose to be a noble), and then do not worry overly much about learning all the coded commands, and getting clues, or any of that for a few weeks. Focus on the RP.
I almost left Arx cause I felt stressed for not knowing where to even begin and the coded commands were all new and I felt old and dumb for not getting it. But they will sort of come dynamically along the way. Don't forget it's still about RP - I did. It got much better once I relaxed and just enjoyed meeting people.

RE: RL things I love
Learning today that one of my best friends now is cancer free from the neck down, and the brain tumor that was nuked two years ago hasn't flared up again (state of remission or something, I don't understand the medical terms.) This guy had kidney cancer, and cancer in a leg, plus a brain tumor, and then he had another tiny brain tumor that they nuked. It's been some long years of waiting anxiously.
NHS is the best. I'm so relieved. My friend is gonna make it.

RE: Covid-19 Gallows Humor
This might not fit here exactly, but better here than in the Good TV thread.
Last year in Sweden, a TV show was launched that was like something never done before: it was a 500+ hour live feed with about 20 cameras, from an area where moose wander across a river, to move to their summer pastures.
It became a HUGE hit. People loved it. They kept their TVs on all day and could check if there were any moose (or other animals, cause there were reindeer, deer, and birds and all sorts). It streamed more than 5 million hours on the streaming site of the national TV.
This year, since people are more isolated and stay more at home, they started the streaming earlier and will do 593 hours total. They call it 'slow TV'.
They also make a highlight of the day so people can catch up.
There's also accompanying talk-shows that discuss the highlights, and facts about the animals and interviews with locals and what not. -
RE: Covid-19 Gallows Humor
You know it's bad when the Swedish government puts in place a law that forbids gatherings of over 50 people and you CAN GET JAILED for breaking that law.
I mean I've realised the severity before, but this really hammered it in.

RE: RL things I love
Started a new job in december and it was soon quite obvious that I don't see as well as I thought I did. Age thing likely, I'm 45. Took me awhile, but finally got my glasses (through work, they paid for them!), and now I can SEE. It's such a huge difference, can't believe I didn't even realise before I began that job! Mind, that job requires me to stare at 10 monitors for 8 hours. I did however have to enlarge all writing on my own computer at home, prior to this, so you'd think the penny would've dropped...
Either or. Fucking love my glasses. I love pushing them up on my head when adressing someone else at work, I love polishing them, I love how they look on my face and most importantly, I love that I can see clearly again.

RE: RL things I love
Things are getting crazy in Sweden as well, but I am watching people get together to help each other, which is what I expect of people here - but it's still heartwarming. Our local shop even opens one hour earlier, so between 7-8 in the mornings, only seniors in risk are allowed to shop there. Just called my mom and dad and told them that, mom was quite happy to learn this. They are both above 70.
Seeing a bunch of groups on facebook offering to do shopping for people in isolation and for elderly (they shop, food is left outside.) Might still be a tiny risk, but long as people wash their hands and are healthy that do the shopping, it's still better than someone risking to go to the store themselves.
Also really like that the Swedish government LISTEN to the experts, and that they're taking the right measures at the right time, to help our health care institutions to the max.

RE: Real World Peeves, Disgruntlement, and Irks.
@Tinuviel You got Swedish friends/relatives?
Either or, least I am as much a hermit as one can get almost, apart from going to work and to shops when I have to. I won't miss anything.
I feel real sorry for people that have paid large sums of money for vacations abroad however, but necessity has no law.

RE: Real World Peeves, Disgruntlement, and Irks.
Sweden is a bit slow with Coronavirus prep but they have closed down any gathering above 500 people. Bunch of sport events cancelled and concerts and stuff. Government also decided to pay everyone first sick day (in Sweden your first sick Day you dont get any money, after that you get like 80% of your salary). No schools closing yet, or work places. My job is essential for various reasons so I cant work from home.
It is just starting to feel tense and uncertain. Not worried about myself, but my parents are in their 70s.
-
RE: Real World Peeves, Disgruntlement, and Irks.
@mietze so confused. You dont get paid as working normally though this? You have to use sick days (and wow the idea there is even such a thing just blows my mind, like your body is a clock you can time to a certain number of days to be sick) and vacation time?!!!

RE: Dead Celebrities 2020
@Ifrit Just heard it on the radio going home from work, I literally went 'Oh shit, not him' in the car.

RE: A bit of trouble on Firefly
@JinShei I completely missed any of this on Discworld... who was it? (And I'm still feeling bad about leaving, it was a lovely game.)

RE: Good TV
Quite curious and mildly hopeful about Tales from the Loop that premieres on Amazon Prime soon. I've loved Simon Stålenhag's art for a long time. I got a framed print of his on my wall right in this room (and likely to get more when I get around to it.)

RE: A Lack of Imagination
@Apos That would perhaps explain why I can remember a room but have problems with people imagery.
Found a test online! https://aphantasia.com/vviq/

RE: A Lack of Imagination
@Lisse24 Though I imagine you got the answer, yes. We do see an actual image, like we draw a picture in our mind and hang it up there. Someone says 'There is a brown oak desk, polished to a shine, with a pile of books and a feather quill ink set on it' - we literally get an image of this coming up.
-
RE: A Lack of Imagination
This is fascinating. I've heard/read a little about this before but never reflected much about it - it was peripheral knowledge that popped up in relation to other things. It's fun trying to pin-point where you are at however.
I do see images in my mind. If I RP on a MUSH I often make images in my head based on descs - mostly locations however. The people are much more indistinct, people are more about how they are as persons, if that makes sense. So they're sort of blurry and indistinct while the setting, well, I can build a whole room up with windows, rugs, paintings, and so on. This is weird, since I absolutely suck at writing descriptions for rooms - I can absolutely picture how I want it to look in my head but describing it, that's a pain. Or it might just be I like the picture but I'm no fan of writing it - it's just boring.
But yeah, the people in a book, or in RP - heck, sometimes I have to double-check people even if I've RPed with them many times before, whether they are blonde or dark-haired, or their eyes are blue or brown, or whether they are tall or short. (Though, those I meet often - I do tend to remember them - the ones close to my character, that I've got a more personal, closer, relationship with.)
I struggle with both names and faces IRL. Might be related. But I can remember the shape and color and details of a hotel room I lived in 15 years ago.

RE: Critters!
Bad news: Pixie is in the hospital - he stopped drinking and eating on saturday, took him in today.
Good news: His bloodwork was fine, nothing wrong with liver, kidneys or his blood.Likely problem? Salmonella. Nothing you cure, you just got to adress the symptoms or the cat can die.
Edited to add: Salmonella goes away on its own, but a cat can die from the symptoms, so the vets got to treat the symptoms. Bit like a really, really bad stomach flu.So, one night in hospital and he should be back to normal tomorrow.
