@Sparks Quickie question. I'm on Mojave and just started using 0.9.9.5. How do I make notifications show for pages? I haven't been able to use that functionality since OSX updated one of the big cats. Be cool to use it again.
So I'm sitting here attempting to research welding. My character welds. I am scared of frying bacon. So I figured, hey, I know a bunch of people who are constantly working on plots and characters and such. Let's work together.
The purpose of this thread: Let's share our resources, tips, tricks, and whatnot on how we create the people we inhabit for a little while. I shall begin.
Names: Need a name? Got a birth year? http://www.behindthename.com/top/lists/united-states/ - Pick the year and decide how trendy the mother was. Works all the way back to the late 1800s and the whole site is a treasure for names, even fantasy
Playedbys: Tumbr's roleplaying community is...not like ours. But they are a quick place to find young and diverse faces. They call them Face Claims. This one is inoffensive enough, though no longer updated. http://bunchoffaceclaims.tumblr.com/
Reddit has a few subs that cater to the thirsty of all ages. My favs that are mostly clean are https://www.reddit.com/r/LadyBoners/ and https://www.reddit.com/r/gentlemanboners/ I open up all the images and just scroll until someone catches my eye.
I started! So...back to welding research. Yay.
Staffing has it's assorted bullshit but I love, love, love being able to make players happy. Fix a sheet. Inform of a bonus. Do some storytelling. The imagined smiles on their faces make all the other crap worth it. Always has. Happy players are my lifeblood so I do what I can to make that happen.
@Doozer and @Derp, I wish I recalled how in the hell it ended up in my lap as Geist lead but I don't and the logs were lost in the Hard Drive Crash of 2017. Sin-Eaters are as fertile as humans and that really should have been the beginning and end of my part but...I dunno what happened. It was The Reach, man. Crazy days.
And yes, it was a bullshit move to tangle up a PC like that and he was really unhappy but the fine details are lost to time and goldfish like memory. I know that I did NOT want to arbitrate and neither did anyone else. Somehow Theno got pulled in to assist me.
@Thenomain She did get pregnant. He was engaged/married to some other PC and I believe there was a whole OOC kerfuffle. But however it was resolved, (Dice, probably.), you helped. I recall being "afraid" of the male player and knowing the female as high drama. Helping me create a distance when I'm flailing in panic solved the problem and I washed my hands of it after that arbitration. But it's my Theno memory.

@skew ... What did poor Theno do that you want to put that on him?
Gather round, let us tell the story of @Thenomain the wise!
Back in the Golden Days of The Reach... No, not the actual ones. The ones that came after the actual ones. Thenomain was on Head Staff, and many a player went to him for arbitration. On account of his inability to remember names or past experiences, he was always neutral. His pedantry ensured the conversations were detail orientated. Players felt they could simply present an issue and not have emotions and the like weighed into it. Thing happened, thing was bad, yes or no, let Thenomain decide!
Which is my snarky ass way of saying Thenomain is a good listener and is highly capable of sorting out other people's choices and problems.
Cosigned. When I was a young Goldfish and The Reach's Geist Lead (lolololololololololol) - It fell to me to arbitrate if a player got pregnant or not. It was an awful, awful, icky thing. But Theno helped me. My memory's terrible but I do remember his even-handedness in figuring it out.
Thanks, @Thenomain
I've read nothing in this thread. I can't get past the fact that the blinking cursor doesn't keep up with my typing. So...what do?
I just finished a post about this, which brought up a question that I will ask here.
Is there something different about Mage between nWoD and CoD that draws out less of that...pedantic bullshit Mage players are known for?
I recall taking forever to learn to cast without like, frantic notes and math and eventually I created a whole damn spellbook that was basically a quick guide to my abilities and how to roll and what I might use it for, etc. Alllll of that, but I don't remember having the same problems with other players on Fallen World as I did in nWoD games. I don't recall the awful fights over X spell or Y spell or extended hanging whatnot jobs.
Amnesia? Rose colored glasses? Or did something change?
I will say, word to @Derp. Mages need things to do. They have a lotta toys and accommodating those toys has to be just impossible for any storyteller.
*EDIT:
*Re: Mage.
Last I heard, it's on the long term plan. I don't believe it's even coded in yet.
See below, I'm wrong as hell.
Personally, I love Mage in single sphere but I have nightmares from my nWoD Mage days that make me cringe and crinkle up inside at the idea of bringing Mage in. {Also, as the M/M+ staffer, I know I'll be mostly out of a job. Hell, I'd Awaken my own psychic.) That said, I have legit faith in our staff, both mechanics and creatives. If we decide to go that way, They are going to make it work and restore some faith in the damn sphere.
One iMac. Two partitions.
I use Atlantis since I use the OSX partition 90 percent of the time. Before the iMac was a Macbook so Atlantis is how I've MU'ed since forever. I have Potato installed on my Windows side but it's not optimised. No time like the present. SIGH.
I miss SimpleMU.

As for my opinion: Straight up, I really think that if you want to criticize the game being advertised, open up a thread in the Hog Pit and do it there.
...
And locking also blocks out positive feedback. I know I go on HorrorMU's ad thread to evangelize when there is an update and positivity is NOT a bad thing. It's an awesome thing and we all could use more of it.Allowing 'positive feedback' in public and walling off criticism behind an opt-in forum that lots of people don't read (because it's mean) or don't know about is bad policy. It defeats half the purpose of the community.
You're right. I reread my post and it's a double standard and it's no better. Bad Goldfish.
I'm just gonna state this: When I made the ad for Echoes, I felt the need to mentally prepare myself for the critics. I'm a sensitive soul but my desire to help out outweighs my nature. Now, if you think that users need to steel themselves before posting an add, fine. If that's not a problem, make a change.
As for my opinion: Straight up, I really think that if you want to criticize the game being advertised, open up a thread in the Hog Pit and do it there. Hell, link it in the Ad thread, if you want. Leave the Ads for questions from possible players and updates on the game itself. Echoes is soft open so eventually, I will need to add more information. And I play on HorrorMU, which changes its story from month to month and has a set number of slots that need to be reported on from time to time. So locking isn't quite a solution.
And locking also blocks out positive feedback. I know I go on HorrorMU's ad thread to evangelize when there is an update and positivity is NOT a bad thing. It's an awesome thing and we all could use more of it.
Edit: I meant well, but the above is an unfair double standard. I will stand by the need for positivity and the reduction of toxicity but not this way.
I love when a piece of game theme or another player's concept just falls in your lap and just lights a fire in the creative furnace. It's always something indirect but game related. Unintentional, perhap,. but I love that feeling.
I won't speak for the staff in charge of the choice to Soft Open. I can speak for the mild clamoring we were all hearing quietly from folks who wanted to play. So, we were mostly ready, so why not open the playground? So it doesn't have all the toys yet but it is very, very clearly a soft open/beta phase.
I do not believe web login is in the cards for us. No one has mentioned it, at least.
@Lisse24 I can only speak of my own hopes and wishes, because things are always changing in this hobby. RL can hit the metaplot staffer and poof! So, this is just opinion.
I feel like we have built our theme and setting from the ground up, as opposed to carrying on someone else's original vision. That freshness, I've found, can make people more excited and productive.
Also, personally, I'm hoping to get more involved in the creative side of things. I dream of this active and happy M/M+ sphere with mystery cults and NPCs and a steady flow of things(Both major and minor) to RP about and I have a handful of ideas to help that along. I want the sphere to live and breathe. Which is a lot more than I can say for any time I have staffed. I usually just crank out jobs and data entry. This is my first attempt at this kind of activity so I'm learning, but I am eager.
And I think the whole staff is eager to see their work come to life and efforts enjoyed.
EDIT: I wanted to add a confirmation that the wiki is still under construction. We're making +finger hip again.
@Kay Hunters got swept away into the Mists. So sorry!

Live Open! - March 1st Thu Feb 21 Moonshrimp
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Okay, everybody.
At exactly 8pm CST on March 1st, we will be leaving soft RP and going live.
This means a few things:
* XP spends will be open, but for a time all spends must go through Staff via a +request.
* XP may be gained through means other than your weekly allowance. Which means you may gain beats through aspirations, PrPs, breaking points,
and all those funky fun things.
* Game plots will kick off in short order, so you'll be wanting to watch +events for happyfuntimes.
* ICA will really and for true mean ICC.
* You will have until 3/14/19 to make any minor respec changes to your sheet that reflects stuff that didn't work for you during soft open.
Please be patient as we here on staff side wrangle with what will likely be a huge influx of jobs. It may take more time than normal to see a response.
The wiki will still be a work-in-progress, but most major information should be there and we're hoping to have character pages ready for you.
In addition, some more specialized things coming down the pike may not be fully in place yet.
We're super excited, hope you are too, and thank you for playing here at Echoes in the Mists!
==============================================================================
I have just gotten started here and the staff were super helpful in assistant with theme, so don't be intimidated by a lack of knowledge in Midnight Texas. I haven't seen the show but I don't feel like I NEED to in order to understand anything. (Although I absolutely intend to watch a few episodes. The second season is on Hulu in the United States.)
That said...I have a very hard time connecting to the game. I can log into multiple other games with multiple logins and Sanctuary stops me dead. My troubleshooting is pointing to to DNS somesuch on my end but I'm not that kind of nerd. I have to kind of reset the connection in my Network settings a few times and then it'll work until I get idle kicked. It's a mess.
So, barring those issues, seems like a cool place.
All the kids are doing it, so hot and fresh update.
