@arkandel I'm in a tabletop game with a min-maxing wizard. The player often destroys entire encounters because his initiative bonus guarantees he'll act first in any round, and his focus on one particular instant death spell means it's nearly impossible to survive; so the other players don't even get a chance to draw their weapons before combat is over. I'm not sure than min-maxing is the problem here rather than his disregard for allowing other players to play the game they're here to play, but his min-maxing is the method by which he's able to prevent them from playing.

RE: The Work Thread
@silverfox Yeah, with educators it feels trickier, because of how the profession is under attack from people who want to replace teachers with propagandists (more than you're already required to be, I mean).

RE: The Work Thread
@silverfox I feel that you are describing a hostage situation. "Either let us continue to endanger you, or we'll put someone worse in your position who'll hurt your patients!"
Negotiating with terrorists is rarely a good idea.

I am like should I really stay in this trench alone, on a sinking ship at this point?
I would argue, dead serious, that staying on a sinking ship is worse than self-destructive: it teaches the ship's captain that they can let the ship keep sinking because fuck it, you'll bail it out for them, so they may as well bring in some more bodies to drown down in the hold after you've gone under for the third time.

RE: ANNOUNCEMENT: We are moving.
Thank you for moving the forum, but also, you missed a chance to name it NuMU Soapbox.

@buttercup You did not fuck everyone over. Unless you are withholding some crucial detail here, there is no way you could have possibly known this would happen, and no one could fairly blame you for it.
Please do not hurt yourself over this. It is completely okay to feel despair in this moment, and you should be allowed to feel it for as long as you need to. Just please set your despair aside when it is no longer serving you.
I'm glad you posted this. Reaching out takes bravery.

RE: Health and Wealth and GrownUp Stuff
I'd rather blot the carpet than be constantly chasing cat hair tumbleweeds with a broom, but that's my personal preference. I don't know why barf is less gross to me than clumps of hair gliding across the floor.

RE: MUs That We Would Love To Make (But Won't)
Y'all are wrong in the head. How can you find something lewd in culture that emphasizes master-subordinate relationships in order to teach them to trust in a power that surrounds, binds, and penetrates us all?

RE: Health and Wealth and GrownUp Stuff
@sahin I don't think anyone ever figures their shit out. I think we just get too old and tired to panic as visibly as we used to when our shit got out of hand.

@insomniac7809 I'd love to see a study on the effect TikTok has on ADD/ADHD people.

RE: GMs and Players
@silverfox I'd guess in this context it means "a named character who is not a distinct charbit emitted by staff, or a named character who is a distinct charbit allowed to be played by more than one member of staff."

Because the human brain is very, very bad at sustaining a state of alertness over time. Just, biochemically, absolutely PANTS at it. This is adaptive, because it allows us to live in a risky world without being in a constant state of meltdown, but maladaptive, because it makes us willing to take dumb risks that we know are risks and feel good about it even if it WILL kill a certain percentage of us.
Seconded. Being able to be constantly aware is often a symptom of some kind of unresolved trauma.
Doesn't make it any less frustrating that dumbshits gotta be dumbshits, though.

Sometimes I wonder how much of my absolutely childlike lack of knowledge of how my body works can be explained by me growing up in the Bible belt. I'm not even talking about sex stuff; I'm talking about stuff like how I get ingrown hairs if I shave too often or how to clean my ears properly so I don't make my ear buds disgusting. I feel like this is stuff that I would have learned if not for an underlying assumption that my body is sinful and therefore shameful to discuss.

RE: Recipes and Shit
2/3 cup mayonnaise
2 tablespoons Dijon mustard
2 tablespoons white vinegar
1 teaspoon paprika
1 teaspoon white sugar
2 teaspoons hot sauce of choice (I mostly use sriracha because it's what I'm most likely to have)
1/2 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepperWhisk all that together in a bowl. Put it in the fridge until you're done cooking.
8 oz egg noodles
1 small red bell pepper, thinly sliced
1 rib celery, thinly sliced and cut to bite-sized lengths
Approximately as much peeled carrot strips as celery stripsBoil the noodles in salted water until they're al dente. Drain them and cool them completely with cold tap water. Dump the drained noodles into a mixing bowl and add the veggies. Give them a good tossing to combine, then pour in the dressing and toss some more until everything's well coated. Cover the bowl and fridge it for two hours until totally chilled, then nom. I guess you could eat it straight away if you like warm pasta salad.

@sunny Dangit, now you've reminded me I know a really nice deviled egg pasta salad recipe. I night have to run to the store for stuff.

@ganymede Sometimes you just gotta smile through the meal your loved one makes you.
