The word "binging." Two syllables spelled almost identically, yet the I and the G are both pronounced differently, and there's no way to infer that without just knowing.

@il-volpe Actually, the more I think about it, the more I wish I hadn't posted that. As much as I hear and share your anger at some of the philosophies presented in this thread and the implications they have for both survivors of harassment and the enabling of harassers, lashing out like I did wasn't helpful to the overall argument I wanted to make; didn't (and couldn't) make anyone stop and think about how it feels to have their arguments taken to the dumbest possible conclusion; and on a personal level was just kind of beneath me.

Well, done's done, and I can't take it back. But I am sorry for that bitter, deeply unhelpful post.

Maybe even as if I am using the specters of some vague group of unnamed victims as human shields in a cynical attempt to make it harder to disagree with my position because anything you say will seem like it's targeting those vague victims rather than my positions or even me?

That must be terrible. It's so unfair that I can't relate.

If we are going to be serious about defending victims of false accusations here, people who are not stalkers but have been labeled so by evil actors, then let's get serious about it.

If a game's policy is that any claim of harassment must be proven with incontrovertible evidence, then that means we are comfortable beginning from the position that people who report abuse cannot be trusted, right? That they are liars or, at least, too mentally incompetent to understand what other players are doing to them. Since such people are so untrustworthy, their reports must be investigated, correct? That's the only reasonable thing to do. No one's saying they're liars, just that they can't be trusted.

So, investigations have to happen. And what happens if an investigation doesn't prove the accuser's allegations? You have to do something about that, right? After all, either the person is either so addicted to drama they'll convince themselves they're being harassed even when they're not, or she's out to hurt some poor innocent man for no reason. You should make a note that she made unsubstantiated claims in case she ever does it again. It can be like a strike against her, except we won't call it a strike. Maybe you should make her sit down with the person she wrongly accused so he can explain to her how it totally wasn't harassment. I'm sure with a staffer in the room to monitor it, nothing could go wrong.

Then, if she was unwilling to reconcile with and/or apologize to the man she wrongfully accused despite having been proven to have misrepresented what happened to her, you could probably form a conclusion from that, right? It means she's too disruptive to allow on your game. Doesn't really matter if she's malicious or mentally unstable; the result is the same either way. You should probably kick her off the game to prevent future drama.

It's the only way to be fair to everyone.

I love every one of you who has been brave enough to come forward and relive your trauma to try to make this hobby safer and more considerate.

My current musical obsessions aside, though, may I ask for clarification on the kind of pretty we're talking about? Because not to get all gay about it, but there's pretty that's meant to impress straight men, and there's pretty that's meant to impress gay women, and a whole wide spectrum between; and I don't think it's necessarily unfair for someone outside the target demographic to get the sense the character isn't meant for them, you know?

I was willing to put up with the samey combat that punished you for using magic and required you to risk death to use a Limit Break, and with a growing sense of annoyance that Rinoa really should have been the main character rather than Squall, but that story bit was when I couldn't take any more. I got rid of Facebook over the ads they were targeting me with. The final straw was an ad offering to send "flower" bouquets made out of bullets to the special lady in your life, as if that's not an explicit threat. I have never in my life shown interest in firearms, so I must assume the ads were linked to my presence on feminist groups.

There were multiple Nazi rallies in Florida last weekend. Lest anyone think I'm using that term as a pejorative, I'm talking people who literally wore swastika armbands and attacked passersby while shouting about how they're going to kill all Jewish people. I heard about them on Maddow and went looking for more info, but for some reason--either because my search-fu sucks or because major news outlets are complicit in normalizing Nazis--I can't find any direct coverage of the rallies themselves, just people offering partisan coverage of Florida's governor refusing to condemn Nazis because he's counting on their support at the polls.

@wizz Thanks for the clarification. I admit, after the first post I was mostly on the side of, "Well those kids suck and your kid is better off without them." It is a much bigger deal than I originally thought.
