@Autumn brings up very good points. The thing is, for people who want the Princes and Princesses? There's already a game for that. Go check out RtA. There's nothing wrong with creating a new scenario for those who are interested in that scenario. Why is this even a debate, instead of people tossing out what they do want to see, within a specific context? Tell me the novel things you want, as opposed to the things you could have that are already out there.

I don't know. I heard she tried to make fetch happen. Fetch is never going to happen.

Favourite Quote (Inspirational or Otherwise)
Just what the title says. I like quotes. Hit me with your favourite(s).
"No" is a complete sentence. It does not require justification or explanation.
Don't believe everything you think.
You may see me struggle, but you will never see me quit.

RE: How can we incentivize IC failure?
@arkandel said in How can we incentivize IC failure?:
However swiss cheese model approaches can absolutely apply. For example while still building a game ask some questions:
- Which in-game rewards (positions, XP, etc) will the game offer? How are they going to be distributed and why?
- How do we engage players in structured plot (PrPs, staff-ran scenes)?
- How do we match reward to risk?
- How do we handle character death?
And so on.
I think this would be really great in a thread on its own, on questions to ask/answer for folks interested in guidance on setting up their own games.

RE: Favourite Quote (Inspirational or Otherwise)
The most difficult thing is the decision to act, the rest is merely tenacity. The fears are paper tigers. You can do anything you decide to do. You can act to change and control your life; and the procedure, the process is its own reward.

On a lighter note, what about the communities perceived inability to adapt to newer ideas of doing things like how to run games, and using newer technologies?
How can we appeal to a younger generation to bring them into our love for MUs?
It would be kind of cool if there was some form of promotion to capitalize on what seems like the resurgence in popularity of 'nerd culture'. Platforms like Critical Role, or things like all the new D&D-based/LotR-based TV shows and movies.

This is a good thread. It's helpful to be reminded of what makes people want to play. Thanks for starting it
You're welcome

RE: Ruiz
But let's be fair, just that pre-banning of @Ganymede for...what? is enough to make me wonder what other bad decisions are being made. And Macha's logs showed that a) she was being slut-shamed and b) it was a consensual log that she was being shamed for and is still being shamed for.
Pretty sure that the bad decisions aren't the ones being made here.
See, the above is good. It's proof you can point to and go, I believe this supports my conjecture that xyz. But I'm agreeing with @hobos that coming in saying 'I think X is plausible because Y, but I'm not offering any tangible proof of Y' is exactly the thing that this board used to do that was damaging. And that did seem like what @Derp was doing. It was a bit disheartening to see.
Eta: do I think that makes it okay for people to come and do the equivalent of 'nyah nyah, told ya so!'? No. But that's just distraction from the heart of the matter.

RE: RL peeves! >< @$!#
Anxiety and panic attacks. I'm not sure 'peeve' is a strong enough word. Maybe the peeve is when people say 'oh just do X (think positively, ignore it, meditate, exercise, take meds, etc)' to get over it. OMG I NEVER WOULD HAVE THOUGHT OF THAT in the 3 years I've been dealing with it! Thank you for your brilliant observation and critique about how to fix my mental issues, and for your dismissive, superior attitude.

RE: Ruiz
@reimesu I don't think we're looking at any one person. Just the content. It's not a defense of Cobalt, per se (I have nothing against Cobalt, afaik I don't know them that well?), just a defense of the ideal in general.

We should take advantage of this opportunity to talk about how cool Aleksei is.
Pretty cool, right?
Do we need to? He already knows everything, he doesn't need to know he's enslaved our hearts and minds as well. God.
Enslaving does seem out of character for him.
It's always the ones you least suspect.

RE: Stranger Danger?
@faraday said in Stranger Danger?:
Where I've landed after all these years:
- I stick to friendly co-op games.
- I don't do PVP or TS.
- I enforce firm boundaries on IC relationships. (Though even that has proved exhausting enough that I am now leery of romantic RP with anyone I don't already know and trust OOCly.)
- I'm choosy about the games I play on - usually either my own or ones from people I trust.
I feel bad that you've had such horrible experiences, though, because I have made several life-long friends through MUSHing. Not just "oh they RP well so it's fun to play a game with them" but true friends. Yes, we must be cautious and sensible with any interactions on the internet, but I don't think we need to be so paranoid that we cut ourselves off from meaningful interaction.
All of the above, though one slight alteration. I enforce firm boundaries, period. IC, OOC, all the boundaries, everywhere. And if there's even the slightest hint of a red flag, I just say so and move on. It has led to a world of difference for me, and I can genuinely say the friends I've made, I feel honoured to have made.
