But it can't be denied that MUDs, MOOs, MUCKs, etc all have fairly distinct cultures to go along with them.

I think this is an interesting point, and the nerd within me assumes that this is probably to do with the fact that when people who have previously MU'd and maybe staffed/coded for a game, they'll then create a game using the same codebase and some of the same people and the culture will follow along ad infinitum.

THAT SAID. I play both on Gray Harbor and Spirit Lake, both on Ares, with similarity in themes and shared players and I find the cultures completely different.

      So, YMMV.

@Rinel I had this a few months back (on a Mac if it makes a difference). Not the exact 6th ping issue, but sudden latency on the wireless every few seconds. Eventually I traced it down to having the EVE Launcher open in the background. Absolutely no idea why - I've seen the same latency spikes when my laptop is scanning wireless networks. Have you tried closing one app after another when you see that spike?

@JinShei Yes! My home is also in that picture (though not the centre of it), and I had a lovely view of the storm in the clouds!

    • RE: OOC Knowledge Levels Question

I mean, just for reference, the message is

%% There's no scene running here. Starting a scene will activate repose and make it easy to share the scene with the web portal. Just do scene/start if you want to start one.

Anyway, to answer the original question...

I play on both Spirit Lake, which is very OOCly transparent, and Arx, which is not. I like the way it works for both of those games. With SL, I like knowing OOCly what's going on because I feel like it fosters that collaborative environment.

On Arx, I think there's so much lore and so much of the theme is built around it and the mystery of it, I like not knowing things OOCly unless I know them ICly. I think that works very well for the IC theme.

So really.. my answer is.. it depends on the theme, and what 'feel' you want from the game.

@surreality I especially despise people that rely on an appeal to authority to some claimed professional or educational knowledge. I hate appeals to authority normally, but especially on the internet by faceless, nameless, probably lifeless people? No, I don't care if you say you have degrees in X, Y, or Z - 1) I don't believe you, 2) That's not an argument.

How dare you. I have a degree in theatre don't you know.

Which means I'm perfectly qualified for theatrics.

ETA and I've just realised this is mildly constructive so... I voted yes, but that's mainly because when I'm not enjoying myself I just drift off fairly quickly.

I have a theory about how all of this is going to end I but I need to fill in some words here
      ***=THEORY THEORY THEORY***

      click to show

Cersei sits on the Iron Throne. Jon and Dany break in. Battle! Everyone about to kill everyone.

      "Freeze all motor functions"

Segue into Season 3 of Westworld.

Turns out Westerosworld got forgotten about and the hosts have just been doing their own thing for years.

@Roz Definitely one of my favourite games in recent memory - I'm only sad that it's not replayable. If I could wipe my memory of it and play it again I would.

When I went I loved the Rockefeller Tour because they took us through some really interesting art.

A bit more of a 'your budget and interest may vary' thing, but if you like theatre, I would highly highly recommend Sleep No More if walking around a converted warehouse with hundreds of things to discover while film noir Macbeth happens around you is your thing (no description I can give will do it justice)

I've been thinking big-city cop who transfers to Grand Lake to get away from the stress. Because that will totally be stress-free. No, his name will not be Nicholas Angel.

So he wasn't transferred because he was making all of the other cops look bad?

(I love it. You should absolutely do a lawyer and RP with them as much as possible.)

I have every intention of using TV tropes exclusively for this. Everything I know about law I learned from Matlock, L.A. Law and The Good Wife. That should do the trick.

      I OBJECT YOUR HONOR.

The Good Wife is my current binge-watch show. SUSTAINED.

The fact that I am entirely unable to compartmentalise is irritating me at the moment.

At work I'm leading on a project that for various reasons is massively behind. This is putting huge stress on me because it's my project and I'm doing all I can to bring it in under the wire, which likely will result in working a swathe of the Christmas holiday.

All of this is fine so far. Except where it's negatively affecting every other aspect of my life, to the point where I don't want to do anything other than curl up in a ball and pretend the world doesn't exist.
