RE: Harassment in VR, there's something we can likely learn from this.
I don't have a problem with sex and sexualtiy. I have problem someone advertising a burger, and then when you get to get the burger someone says "Surprise! Here's a salad instead!". So they go to the next place advertising a burger and demand a salad because that's what they got at the last burger place because the more they see salads the more they come to expect salads from burger places, not burgers. I wouldn't have any issue with it if there was a place for them to provide salad at a place that advertised salad.
Or hey, back to the original article: If a woman in VR gets groped without invitation and encourages it and doesn't speak up, then yes, she is partially responsible for the next woman who's avatar who gets groped uninvited because she she is contributing to the problem. She is doing nothing to fix it she is encouraging it. Yes most of the blame is on the man who thinks it is okay. But the woman who doesn't say it's not okay is by no means blameless.
I guess I'm a misogynist then? I've been on the "Why not, other person did" end of things far too often to otherwise. I'm not being sexually harassed because I'm a girl, I'm being sexually harassed because another woman is encouraging the behavior by using her sexuality. How is that not a problem?

RE: Good TV
@Cupcake It's airing in Canada. We got the first two episodes on Space.
There was a half-naked male butt though, so probably why it's not on SyFy yet. I remembered they had to edit all the butts out of Bitten.

@mietze Yeah, doing a Let's Play or streaming is not being a demonstrator. I'm mean sure, if you just have a mic and record something and put it up. But there is actually a lot more work that goes into it if you are trying to make a living out of it. Photoshop, video recording, sound editing, posting on multiple social media places to get the word out there about the video is seen because you are likely hoping to get ad revenue from your views, and most people use adblock nowadays so they don't even see the ad from your video. Or maybe you have a Patreon and you want to keep putting out extra content for the people who pay for it.
Putting up a video a day is absolutely work. Especially if you do any sort of editing. A 20 min video might have an hour and a half of gameplay you have to go through.
Eports is an actual thing too. People on professional teams, managers, all gaming.
Twitch is all about gaming. When you go to the front page it lists Featured games people are playing and see all live games. You don't even see links to the newer stuff until you sign in. Twitch lists things as games being played. If I like WoW, I'm going to look at WoW streams. If I like the personality of the person playing, I'll probably watch them more.
It may be entertaining sure, to see a woman in a bikini smooshing her boobs together in front some random game. Yeah they are doing the work to draw the audience. But the audience they are going for is not what it is geared too. They are not the only reason guys say "tits or gtfo' but they are a big contributor of it. I have no issue with sex and sexuality. What I have an issue with is the sex as a gaming backdrop in the gaming culture. It has nothing to do with booth babes, or women in bikinis in the game, that's not the issue.
Lumping bikini streamers in with booth babes is the problem. Sure, both women get paid to stand around looking sexy in from of the game. But one of them is paid to do it, the other uses the game to get people to watch them stand around. So yeah, if a guy is going to get upset that mytits aren't out because they expect it because that other streamer did it? I'm going to absolutely put the fault on the bikini babe. She the guy is an asshole, but if she didn't falsely advertise what her content is, he wouldn't have thought that. The problem is they are listed as playing a game when they are standing in front of a screen of game being played, usually with no commentary about the game.
So a guy goes to that channel and see's it's okay, and then the next time he encounters a woman in game it's okay to make sexual comments to her, uninvited, because some woman did it? That's what my issue is. These women are not booth babes, paid by the devs to promote the game they are women who use the popularity of the game to promote their boobs. That's the problem because people are dumb and think it's okay with every woman, and it's not. You can't tell me bikini streamers can't be blamed when I have had it said to me more than once "Well I was watching this game the other night and another woman was playing and she was half naked, why can't you?" which for me is far creepier than asking if I'm dating a guy because I recorded a video with him.

RE: Harassment in VR, there's something we can likely learn from this.
@Sunny Right, but that's my point. They claim it is gaming and makes it that much more difficult on the women who do game and keep our boobs out of sight.
-
RE: Harassment in VR, there's something we can likely learn from this.
Yes. Eleventy billion times yes.
-
RE: Harassment in VR, there's something we can likely learn from this.
@Sunny For me it comes down to the whole equal pay for equal work thing. If my work is gaming, then those women if they aren't gaming, just shaking it in front of a game aren't doing equal work.
Plus Twitch does a lot more than just gaming now. If I were a baker and I showed people how to bake on screen, I would be just as pissed if someone in a bikini just stood in front of a cooling cookies and called herself a baking channel.

RE: Harassment in VR, there's something we can likely learn from this.
@Groth I agree, if someone wants to watch nipples they should be able to watch nipples, maybe put it behind a wall so that kids can't watch nipples. But at least they are banning all nipples and not just female nipples. coughfacebookInstagramcough
-
RE: Harassment in VR, there's something we can likely learn from this.
Twitch IS trying to curb it, at least. No nipples on a live person for anyone! Doesn't matter if it's legal for you to go topless down the street, if you have nipples, you can't show them on screen.
Which has been sending people to Youtube. Only Youtube has a vague no partial nudity rule. Also no profanity, or sexual innuendo as part of the ToS. So in theory people could complain if they are offended by it. And with this new Youtube Heroes thing it could get... internesting.
(Pixilated nipples are okay on Twitch though, so long as they aren't the focus of the game.)

RE: Harassment in VR, there's something we can likely learn from this.
A lot of them don't play though, it's them twerking over footage or "If I hit 100 followers on this stream I will kiss this other girl!"
Personality is why most people watch Let's Plays and the like. Sure someone might be stuck and looking for help. Or they might be interested in the game, but not enough to pay for it. Most of their personality is Tee hee! Looks at me! I'm a girl and I'm gaming!
Sure they can produce content, but it's a bait and switch. And it's a problem when they do this and other people go into a channel and expect the same thing simply because you are female and a lot of females do it.
That's what my issue is with. Because if that's what people expect, they think it's okay to demand it, and they are assholes when they don't get it.

RE: Cheap or Free Games!
So pretty much everywhere has a spooky Halloween sale going on right now. But HumbleStore has Inside on sale AND you get a free copy of Limbo too.

RE: Harassment in VR, there's something we can likely learn from this.
To be fair Theno told me he was also asked the same thing when he linked a video we did to someone so she could hear his voice, but I think that was because I had told him it had happened to me because it's happened more than once. The tweets thing is more weird because we haven't recorded together, but I was also asked if he was a bot or something at first. Because apparently a guy just can't like a thing a girl does or something.
Seriously not even getting into the comments about the group I game with which is 3 guys of which two of them tease the other one because he has a crush on me and won't admit it. Apparently I'm dating them all. Even though they are all cousins. And two of them (the teasers) frequently get asked to have threesomes. It's complicated.
You haven't liked every post though, so maybe Common Law? It has been more years. I dunno, does that affect taxes?
I have said it before but I have to say it again though, my moderators are gentlemen, they shut that down usually faster than I an see it if it happens when I'm streaming. The questions usually come to my in box though. Between that and the Youtube searches people get to my channel (naked earthbound, tentacle sex) it can get pretty weird, I honestly hope it never gets to a point I feel so uncomfortable by it that I don't stream / Let's Play anymore, because I like streaming dammit. And I realize by putting myself out there, I'm opening myself up to it, but it should never ever be something I should have to worry about. It is though, always in the back of my mind a little bit.
Thankfully it's not a constant thing and I get accused more of having a crush on Mike from Until Dawn than I get asked if I'm sleeping with a guy because we are friends and enjoy the same things.

RE: Harassment in VR, there's something we can likely learn from this.
So I got food poisoning last night, so this might be even more rambly than usual.
I started RPing...does stealing my dad's D&D book to teach myself to read count? I'm on only child so... I watched dad play games on the Commodore and in Jr. High and High school during lunch and weekends and such. And those guys spoiled me because while they thought it was cool I played, but not because I was a girl. But they were my alternate big brothers so sex was never a thing for me. So honestly OMG a girl was a bit of a shock for me.
I very much believe in equal pay for equal work. And I think that's why bikini streamers bother me so much; as much as I go on and on about being a bad player, I'm not really that bad otherwise I wouldn't have the subs that I do, my voice is nowhere near that sexy. But most of these women really are bad. They get the subs, sure because people want to oogle them and I mean people pay monthly subscriptions to see their content, not just people subscribed to the channel. You could argue that they put in just as much work as normal streamers. And a 5'2" woman who can barely lift a bag of potatoes is probably going to do more work than a 6'2" walking block of muscle fireman - and in this case I think she should be paid just as much as the man. But gaming is the work, and they just don't do it.
It just makes it harder for women who just want to be gamers. Or... women online really. I'm not knocking sexuality, I'm knocking the women who use that sexuality because all it does is make it okay for other people to treat other women like that. Like the example above about TS and owing... I have had multiple people ask me if Theno and I were dating, because we've recorded some videos together. More recently I've been asked if I'm dating one of my Twitter followers because he likes every tweet I do. Mostly "Hey, check out this video!" tweets, but the occasional random thing too.. He's also a gamer and we haven't recorded anything yet - and now I'm a little afraid too because that might be like a proposal or something at this point.
I'm a gamer. I can game without having a boyfriend who got me into gaming. When I played tabletop I was usually the only girl there, but I was never there because I was the GM's girlfriend. I saved up the 5k gold I needed for a flying mount without having to fuck anyone to do it. I should be able to play a female character and not have complete strangers want to TS me because I'm a female behind the screen or whatever. And things have gotten better. The best way to fix it as a group though is basically what has been done; The non-dicks need to stand up and say that it isn't okay. That it won't be tolerated. Teach your sons not to be dicks! I mean really, we're all of an age now. Some of us have kids. If you don't want it to be an issue, on the street or in VR, teach them that it's wrong. That it's wrong to treat women that way, and that it's wrong to let others think it's okay to treat women that way.
TL;DR Thanks guys who aren't dicks for not being dicks. Keep it up!

Anyway, fast forward a few weeks, and my character is on +where as being in a bedroom with someone. Whether they were using the bed or not is sorta irrelevant, because we all know that's what everyone assumes the moment they see 'bedroom', and that particular stupidity is a stupidity to rail against at some other time; the only relevant thing here is: the assumption is definitely there.
If I ever finish my game, I'm going to convince the coder to make unfindable say Bedroom. Sure it'll catch some people trying to dodge creepers, but I think it would be over all funny.

Too many people will assume someone is still 'open for business', simply not give a shit, start talking smack about the partner/start trying to undercut the partner, or spout the 'you are not poly-friendly and therefore you are an inferior monogamous being, I will liberate and enlighten you with generous applications of my ginormous dong!' bag of bullshit.
Your kink is not my kink, therefore you are wrong!

RE: Harassment in VR, there's something we can likely learn from this.
I think part of the problem with men who are a problem to women online is wish fulfilment, and they might not even know it. Because at the end of the day it's anonymous. There is also a novelty to it, which is silly. Woman as gamers make up something like 48% of gamers, and i'm not even thinking about mobile games. We're out there but we hide so it seems like there aren't any. But they aren't told any better. Or they are given examples of how it's okay.
And then you have the guys like Rex who are just assholes and actively seek out women to treat badly, because they are assholes. It's separating the two that is the issue. And really that shouldn't be up to the woman who is being bothered to sort it out. The problem is that unfortunately the real problem is that women generally don't feel comfortable being able to say no which... I don't know how we can fix that. It's easy enough to say "well speak up." but yeah... my last relationship it would have been easier had he hit me. I could have easily left. Sometimes speaking up just doesn't feel like an option. or even worse doesn't even register as an option.
How to fix it? Don't be a dick. Everything would be so much easier if everyone was just Excellent to each other.

Then I just decided to have fun with it. I started doing Let's Plays and Streaming because I talk to myself anyway, so why not record it? I play what I want and try to ignore subs. Until I look at them and get bummed because I'm not getting them because I'm not actively trying to use my sexuality to get them.
I just do not understand why any man watching women playing video games would come to the conclusion that they are trying to use their sexuality to "get them."
I just don't.
That's just the stupidest conclusion I can think of, honestly. I know it happens, but I don't know why. I just wonder at what point gamers ever thought that it was a reasonable conclusion.
Them in this case was views / subscribers. Sorry if I wasn't too clear.
But if I had to answer honestly, I would have to say when people started offering a mount for a mount. It's titillating and wish fulfilment and doesn't have the stigma of watching porn?

RE: Harassment in VR, there's something we can likely learn from this.
How about this: Recently a female player's PC met a male's one time on the grid. They didn't know each other OOC beforehand and the scene was completely neutral. Within a couple of days that person was sending them pages when she was playing with other people, pestering her with pages, etc. This was happening just a bit under the threshold of actionable harassment (possibly by design) but the player in question was perfectly capable of handling it on her own, setting limits and cutting that person off.
Honestly? I would totally RP more male characters, if I could actually RP male characters. But I'm not male, so whenever I try they become obvious caricatures and it would defeat the point of playing a male character not to be noticed as a female anyway. Just so I could get some RP.
Or I could play a lesbian, I suppose. But there is just way too much porn out there. Tangent: If in sex or RP you aren't willing to do a thing, don't assume I will want to do a thing because you ask me. Guys who want a threesome with two girls because it would be cool damn well better be willing to have a threesome with two guys or gtfo. And that's why playing gay and female doesn't work because those guys who page because you are female probably assume all girls secretly love the cock anyway.
But as to what to do about it? Women (But anyone really) needs to feel comfortable to be able to say no. Once you've said no and it continues, take it to staff. I'm not saying someone has to be banned, but if it doesn't stop I'll remove myself from the situation.
But as I said at the beginning, I'm not a fan of females who perpetuate the poor helpless female stereotype. I mean, sure, you be you, but it just makes the rest of us look bad and doesn't help anyone but yourself. Stop telling all guys it's okay to treat all women that way. That's what pisses me off. Just because it's okay for some, it's not okay for everyone. It's not jealousy or anything because I'm not as attractive as the girls who do streams in bikinis, and I'm certainly not telling people to be someone they aren't, but you have to be aware of the message you are putting out there.
Sorry, getting ranty, obviously something I deal with a lot and am passionate about.
TL;DR what do you do about it? If it bothers you, tell the person to stop whatever it is that bothers you. You don't have to explain why; if you aren't comfortable, you aren't comfortable. If they can't respect that, escalate.
