    • RE: Balancing wizards and warriors

Smart ass answer is 'define wizard and define warrior'

      ...

More reasonable answer is give each their own cool thing. AD&D gave the warrior classes Followers. The wizard got high level spells, the warrior got an army to lead. FFG L5R gives Shugenja spells and rituals, and gives Bushi martial arts Kata that let them do things no Shugenja can dream of. In Shadowrun, the mage gets Metamagic... so just HR that something something magical interference, Magic Attribite does not let you have Alpha, Beta, or Deltaware. Or maybe give the Samurai access to their own metamagic stuff... like Otaku/Technomancers get access to MatrixMagic.

Ooooor redefine everything, D&D 4e style. This will piss everyone off, so fair warning.

      Edit because spelling is hard

I'll come back to Anothee Life in a bit, really!

      Right now, though..

I am GREATLY Peeved that Lower Decks is vewed as lesser than Live Action Star Trek. The Season 2 Finale is some of the BEST Star Trek in recent years, and it has had some quality competition, too.

@derp I am still in the middle of it, but what I have seen so far is bad, and further justifies my 'Netflix is trash' stance on things.

What about D&D where people's last name is often "Drowslayer" or "Magicbane" ?

Those are titles of achievement, earn them on-grid if you want them, I GUESS.

Shout out to Abyssal Exalted for the Most Unique Names.

Names. Very few characters are called Steve or Jen.

      It's always Maximillian and Lillian.

I do kind of groan when I see characters who are supposed to be twenty but clearly have the names of someone who is the character's mom's age. It's not a huge deal or anything, but I notice it. No American born after 1990 is named Bianca.

This is why big scenes should require places code, so you can +join a table and only RP with the cool kids.

Instead of places code, I'm considering code that'll send a monster out to attack any public room that has 6 or more characters in it for longer than an hour or so.

This just turns the public room with 6 people into a a public room with an orgy going on. MONSTER-FUCKERS UNITE!

    • RE: FFG L5R

@reason I will break the game, but sure.

      ...

I'm not joking, I crashed the HSpace 5 test server like 11 times running the dumbest of commands. (Specifically, the dumbest one I can recall at the moment was when I jettisoned cargo while the ship was spinning in place. This tried to put rotational velocity onto a cargo object that did not have a place for rotational velocity to go... this caused the game to shit itself)

But yeah, I'll test chargen code when it gets ready, sure.

@ganymede Bakeneko are the L5R catfolk, and we'd have to either do a 4e game, or kitbash our own rules for Hengoyokai since FFG has only written rules for Kitsune so far.

AS FOR RUNNING GAME! I... can't be bothered to run PLOTS, since I barely have time to RP my existing characters, but I will totally help run the math for chargen, be an XP or maybe equipment monkey, and also help to write up the NPC social web diagrams of not just whatever location gets picked, but also all of the places (making sure that the three Crane PCs from the same neighboring city aren't working at odds because they each think the Daimyo wants something different, for example).

Now I just need someone who knows how code and who wants the responsibility of plotz and hosting and whatever.

@too-old-for-this Totally off topic, but signal boosting Inspirisles, the TTRPG that strait up teaches you Sign Language as you play. I am thoroughly upset I missed out on the Kickstarter for this, because it's hella neat!

@carma Off-screen is fine. I more mean 'the 40 hours a day you spend on Piano maintain your piano skills... but you have ne free time to go to the gym, so you cannot obtain or maintain an Olympic physique' without cutting into piano time... doing so means you lose some mad piano skillz

@hedgehog Nobody is a fan of my 'allocate hours of time each week to maintain your stats, or the XP is refunded as the muscle memory starts to fade, or you forget the maths or history or science' system. Which is fair, because it's paperwork, but if we want realism for 'it takes so long to learn a thing', we really ought to include 'it takes time to maintain the thing'.

Suddenly able to go from novice to doctorate level of a skill, just because you attended a few parties OR because it's been 4 weeks.

This is why linking 'number of dots/skill ranks' to 'level of knowledge' is kinda dumb. Because at the end of the day, from a WoD perspective... an Int 4/Medicine 2 and an Int 1/Medicine 5 person are rolling the same number of dice, and 3 successes on that roll are 3 successes. But also we're in the 'why games are dumb' thread, so it's fine. It's also why I pretend 'Oh, I always knew this stuff, I just never had reason to show you before today'.

@il-volpe said in Weird or unrealistic gaming... stuff:

I may have mentioned this before, but in the interests of realism, at least 30% of found magic items ought to turn out to be sex toys.

The OGL 3.0 Book of Erotic Fantasy was amazing(ly bad) and came up with item slots for lulz. Like enchanted nipple rings filled up the torso item slot, if memory serves? Gave plenty of options for the sex toy magic items.

... but also obligatory 'every magic item is a sex toy if you are not a coward!'

Honest answer: because my coding knowledge stops at [space()] and [ansi()] to make pretty little color-coded charts.

@greenflashlight People trying to abstract HP as not actual health, which... I get, but also why I sorta like the games that abstract it with both Wounds for Actual Health(tm) and Vitality Points as like... 'dodge energy'. But also also hurray games that just have a smoller health track because a body is a body and incredibly fragile.

The inverse of this is where we get to the unrealistic... stuff. This foam nerf sword deals 1 point of bashing damage, takes 15 minutes for the light bruise to stope hurting a teeny bit. Except if I roll 30 successes and you don't soak them all. Now I've somehow decapitated you, because of how damage rolls over.

That's actually a neat mage or changeling weapon. Vorpal Nerf Sword. I'm writing that down.

I know this is still the coding phase and not the world-building phase, but some of the ideas from the L&L discussion could be done here. Not a full roster where you drop a character and pick up another, but pre-made folks who fill needed roles and with ties to others. People log onto games and ask what is needed... point them at a list with a sheet that is ready to go, minus a few changes if they want.
