@Derp @Devrex Thoughts on pre-banning for past bad behavior?
@reimesu said in GMs and Players:
does the game have an 'automatically banned from this game' list?
I pre-banned seven people. Four of them are people that were banned on GH over the years for various nutty things. One is a person that admitted to knowing about predation on the game and not reporting it. One is someone I know to be an emotional manipulator and gaslighter 'cause she did that stuff to me. And one is Ruiz.
I would assume "show me the logs" staff philosophy wouldn't require a pre-banned list, since that would assume guilt without evidence.
@reimesu said in GMs and Players:
I have reasons for not being ok with @krmbm's approach of "dude wtf leave my friend alone" without evidence but mostly because, as I've stated, I've seen that approach used to some pretty bad effect.
I will not make that mistake again, and I hope other people learn from it.
@roz Yikes. That sucks.
I do think it's the exception and an over the top example of what is generally asked of the average Mu* staffer. I've been doing this a long time and never had that scenario.
If someone I play with came to me with the situation, I'd absolutely swing the banhammer if it was within my power to do so.
It's not a question of "staff ethics" to me. It's a question of "dude wtf leave my friend alone."
@reimesu said in GMs and Players:
@krmbm You're putting words in someone's mouth, when the original point is "people can misrepresent themselves or others." You're really reaching.
I am? Sorry, I was just asking questions.
@devrex said in GMs and Players:
I don't know what you're getting 12 from
I was using "12" as "misc number that is not the MASSIVE NUMBER THAT BIG BUSINESSES HAVE."
Anyway. Asked and answered. We have entirely different philosophies is all. I was genuinely curious, and it seems like this has become more defensive than constructive.
@devrex said in GMs and Players:
And I don't know most of 'em from Adam.
And don't want to or...?
This isn't a dig at the way you're handling it. I just want to know: Do you need/want to keep them at arm's reach for some reason?
Where does this "approach it like a business" mentality come from? Are you protecting yourself or do you think this is really the best approach for your players?
You are one staffer. You have twelve players. Why don't you know them from Adam?
@derp said in GMs and Players:
Exactly how do you think I should be treating it?
Like you are running a MUSH with 12 people on it.
If that, to you, means a "bring your big boy britches" approach to player issues, right on.
To me, it means that these people are very likely acquaintances if not friends (many of whom I've know for years now), and I will treat them as such.
I think the "abusive ex-husband" scenario is ridiculous and over-the-top, but I also learned some hard lessons staffing GH and made some big mistakes. Not treating players like they are my friends that I enjoy and need to stand up for is one of them.
I hope you don't wind up with the same hindsight one day.
@derp said in GMs and Players:
Because that's not what Zuck is there for.
I just think equating "running a MUSH" to "running Facebook" is a reach. They're both online communities; that's about where the similarities end.
The reason you're not asking for help from the "game owner of Discord" is because you don't have access to that person because they are running a business that caters to a massive audience.
You are running a MUSH with 12 people on it.
You need to treat it that way.
@devrex said in GMs and Players:
Why we expect more out of MU* runners than we expect off of any other site or service or app you log into is way beyond me.
Because it's a much more intimate setting with personal access to the administrator.
I don't know about you guys, but I've never talked to the people who own Discord (however that's managed). I've definitely never paged Zuckerberg and asked him if he could give me any pointers for getting involved in the plot.
@girlcalledblu said in Wheel of Time MU*:
So the question isβdo you focus on the years before the books? Do you venture into the after the Last Battle (wtf does that even look like)?
I like the "alt universe" version that puts the game back in the era of the books, but none of the PCs exist, and the Dragon is still out there. It just leaves the problem of men not being able to channel...
...but I think that's one of the cool thematic aspects of the world anyway.
@arkandel said in Wheel of Time MU*:
A system should be able to work even just based on record-keeping just for major milestones. "Is this person strong enough in Water to learn this healing weave", "is this person skilled enough with sword forms to be on the path to Blademastery", etc.
I think a more generic accounting system than FS3 works for this.
Whether the stats are tracking my potential (Water-3, Spirit-5, Air-2 // Swordmastery-6), or tracking what I've been taught (Badass Water Weave #55 // Dance of the Crazy Waterbird) doesn't matter.
I need someplace to remind me what my character's limitations are, then I can go RP it accordingly. A simple dice system is fine, but even that is unnecessary if I can just see that Bob is stronger than me so I better just light him on fire.
Put me in the "less is more" camp when it comes to coding out systems in this world. Even the author couldn't seem to keep his power-levels coherent.
@girlcalledblu said in Wheel of Time MU*:
he has quite a knowledge set on how to adapt FS3 for all manner of themes much to Fara's BIG SIGHS. He's made it work for magic on three different themes so far (futuristic fantasy, Dieselpunk fantasy, and urban fantasy).
I would kinda go the other route and recommend either scrapping FS3 and creating your own system, or maybe asking @Tat for SL's system.
FS3 can be adapted for magic. But it's really not meant for people throwing fireballs and pulling down mountainsides.
Old MUSH WoT games tended to have limited stats coded - you would get powers on a scale of 1-10, for example, but there were no integrated combat systems and what-not - and relied heavily on storytelling for magic users.
Ares would be awesome for Wheel of Time. FS3 is probably going to be an uncomfortable fit.

When I woke up this morning, a plot I've been fiddling with figured itself out, and it made me happy, and now I'm stoked to play it with my friends.
I've been having a lot of fun the last couple months. I missed playing with a lot of you guys, and I'm enjoying some new friends.
Here's to more yeti-babies, pixie dust and hairless cats soul-sucking demons in 2022.
Play with whoever you like. Avoid whoever you don't like.
Why would you want to play with someone who is only there out of some sense of obligation? I would hope people play with me 'cause it's fun, and not 'cause it looks bad otherwise.

In KB/AM games, one of the things I really appreciated them doing is having a sheet for 'wanted' character concepts, and then also listing character concepts that they considered 'overdone' for the setting, and then also closing character concepts when they decided the game had enough, or that the concept wasn't appropriate for this particular game.
Daww, this is a nice compliment. Thank you.
Even with that: there's a subset of players that logs in to ask, "What concepts do you need?" When we link that page, about half of them go, "I saw that, but what should I play?" Because they are not a typical player, who can just select a concept off a list available to the unwashed masses.
MUSHers are just weird. You could tell all of us exactly what your game is for - we are here to RP family-friendly MLP sim - and at least one person is gonna show up and ask if they can play a Pokemon and explain how it totally works with your theme, promise.
Pretty much what @Pyrephox said, just add in "lots of lolz & angst, please."
