@Kestrel You've seen mine. Somebody asks, Richard Nixon picture it is. I have no idea why anyone would possibly think this is a good idea. I cannot imagine any time I'd want to send or receive one. There is no situation I can conceive of where this is a good idea.
I'm guessing it largely has to do with showing dominance, though. "Look, I just forced you into a sexual situation whether you liked it or not."

@Alamias Yes, Gray Harbor is my game which I made specifically because of the lack of those kinds of games My point still stands, and the popularity that both Spirit Lake and my game have seen are a result of a lack of games in those categories.
I will say, and this is not meant as a dig at Gray Harbor, at all, which I had a lot of fun on, is that one reason I fizzled out and couldn't get back into it (besides being a horrible flake) was that things got a bit Dream-centered and heavy on the magical realism for me. I loved reading about it but I couldn't relate to playing on it, in a way, precisely because I was hoping for something more lowkey there. There's a lot of room for different ways of approaching a modern or modern-ish setting, so it's not like the niche is full at all.
It's not at all full, and the more games are out there, the easier it'll be finding one that works for you. Personally I enjoy the people and community bits of Gray Harbor more than I do the metaplot and the dream magic, but if anything, that's the power of that setting: That you can make it as realistic or not realistic as you want. Some players want all the magic action and some players prefer a light sprinkle of supernatural but mostly everyday problems. I'm on the latter end of the scale there, but the buffet style approach of the setting seems to be working (at least for me).
I can't stand sped up time. I have to deal with the holidays ONCE a year, that's bad enough -- please don't make it twice or even more. Timezones make it difficult for me to play 'live' scenes, meaning that often, my scenes take 1-3 days to resolve -- so suddenly, with time on 1:2, I've lost a week to having a conversation, and oh hey, that thanksgiving dinner you invited me for, that's new years' instead.
As a Dane, I'm not going to even pretend to deny that I don't fall on my ass laughing helplessly when I see Americans talk about their viking heritage.
Some of them do know what they're talking about. Most of them think they're descended from Vikings the show.

@HelloProject Agreed. Whiteness is what Republicans consider acceptable levels of melanin at any given time. Irish and Italians are white now. Hispanics are no longer white.
Having recently branched out into playing a Spanish character (from Bilbao, Spain) I have been surprised at this. As a Scandinavian it never occurred to me to consider a light olive skinned, green-eyed, brown-haired guy to be -- well, not white. American players on the game tell me that by US definitions, he is a POC. To me, he looks like someone I might bump into at the local gas station here in Denmark, back from a two week vacation to the Mediterranean.
It's not just a matter of skin tone. And at least to me, it's very bizarre.
@Tinuviel said in Diversity Representation in MU*ing:
@L-B-Heuschkel @Goblin From my understanding American racism is mainly about skin tone, whereas European racism is more about which country you're from. Of course skin tone is an element of European racism, as it is everywhere, but it's not really the first thing that comes to mind when you think 'European cultural rivalries'.
I'm tempted to say that cultural rivalries seems to be an issue for both? When a guy who could be my neighbour here in Denmark is considered a POC because he's Spanish, then the issue is that he's Spanish -- not the colour of his skin. I guess that you can say that yes, it's what country you're from, rather than the exact amount of pigmentation.
Cultural rivalries in Europe are definitely a thing. To be blunt; there's a strong undercurrent in northern Europe that southern Europe exists so that we have somewhere with a nice beach to go sit on while we complain that the food is odd and the wait staff has a Spanish/Italian/Maltese/whatever accent.

Where 'normal' does indeed depend on what side of the planet you're on.
Yes, I'm wildly envious of people who get to consider 'live' scenes normal.
I don't think tags will make much difference, since people's ideas of what 'glacial' means will vary very much.
Personally I make sure up front that people know I'm a no-good European who sleeps when real people are awake, and that anyone who wants to play with me needs to accept that. A number of people will not deal with that, and they wouldn't turn up if the scene said 'glacial' either.
@Cobaltasaurus Yeah. Same for me on the two games I am on. It's a little meh to see them go quiet and people be busy or too depressed/stressed to play. But it's how it is right now. Might help a bit when we clear the initial weeks of September where a lot of things are starting back up after summer. Might not clear until we've cleared November. Either way, as long as folks have a grid to have fun on when they are able, I think our games are doing everything they can.
@JinShei At this point I am rapidly approaching "challenge accepted" and I feel the urge to point out that YOU are currently the admin who would thus be subjected to three or four hours of absolutely pitiful, embarrassing, worst-I-can-think-of mud sex.
@faraday A very good one, too. Clear and easy to read. Good point there at the end, clarifying once and for all, don't assume that private is private. In the end, what you put on the net is on you, not on Ares.

I mean, if the other person asks and there's consent from both parties, send a picture of whatever body part y'all want.
If there's consent from both parties I don't think we're going to see complaints either. People can do anything they want to each other as far as I am concerned, as long as there is consent.
Let me amend that. "There is no situation I can conceive of where unsolicited dick pics are a good idea."

I'm for it. A number of friends have declined invitations with 'no thanks, already tried that a few years back' and they are clearly confusing us with DiscworldMUD. Probably best to sort that out or we'll have a very confused, partially shared player base. The time to rebrand is now, not later.
I suggest keeping the website url though, or at least redirecting from it, so that people Googling for "discworld game" are likely to find us as well, based on the algorithm.
@Auspice The only thing that the Norse saw as a big deal about cross-dressing and homosexuality was being the bottom; that was emasculating and embarrassing. Topping one's slaves or putting on a dress, on the other hand, eh, why not. The story of Thor as Thrym's bride pokes good-natured fun at Thor, but is also in line with the Norse tendency for stories to award cunning and creative thinking -- he got the hammer back, Thrym died, everyone we like wins.

@JinShei To be fair, we're not really competition to the MUD. We don't offer the extensive geography, economy, experience, and combat system that the MUD does. The MUD, on the other hand, doesn't do much in terms of roleplaying. Seems to me that we should be able to co-exist quite nicely, and might even end up sending players each others' way.
