    • RE: MUs That We Would Love To Make (But Won't)

I'm sure as heck in no rush to get to hold all the things together to create my own game but if I ever do? I have thought about basing one off the free town of Fredericia, Denmark -- which historically had freedom of religion and asylum for any crime committed anywhere else since 1650. The result was a Wild West-like chaotic border town-feel, with half a dozen religious denominations and factions struggling for survival, hitmen and kidnappers from elsewhere hunting wanted men who in turn dared not step outside the city gates, a large military garrison constantly feuding with local land owners, and a plethora of absolutely over the top personalities and stories -- and it's all very well documented.

Then add, oh, and by the way, the magic of folklore of superstition is real, shake, and bake.

@silverfox And I have a new grandma across the street. I'm still trying to decide whether to apply for adoption or run away screaming.

      I mean, hi.

Come visit on Gray Harbor sometime if you're bored, and feel free to hunt me down anytime. I'm in CET and I manage to find RP nonetheless. 😉

This is different just exploring a thing. Exploration of human behavior and meaning is way different.

Those are very different things. One is a thought experiment -- say, what would it be like to be a gay sailor in 1930s London, or whatever. The other is a potential meltdown in the making, because even when therapy is wildly successful, therapy hurts.

Yeah, no. I didn't sign on to be somebody's free therapy, and I don't expect anyone to be mine. Take that stuff to private conversations with the friends you make, friends who may indeed be willing to go that extra mile. But don't subject random strangers on the internet to it.

@GangOfDolls It is generally a wise choice to ask if anyone's got a squick around whatever, before you throw it at them. Just as it's a good idea to tell people if you have an unusual squick. I know people who refuse to RP around the topic of pregnancy -- around infidelity -- and for myself, competition. I can't and won't deal with anything that might bleed into OOC competitive territory -- and others have other reservations of their own.

It's IC/OOC bleed, definitely. But it's also taking responsibility for it, and not inflicting your trauma on everyone else -- or putting yourself through something that only rips up old wounds.

I agree. That's the approach I usually take.

The problem I see is when the character is being a dick and the player doesn't want to accept the character being called a dick because the player gets hurt OOC. It feels like a 'get out of jerkass free' card, and I'm really not on board with it, nor do I think it's healthy for any player involved in such a situation.

Yeah, then we're back at the 'lol it's just RP' excuse where people either try to pretend that they're not hurt (but they totally are) or tell you that you have no right to feel hurt just because they just walked all over you.

@Derp A player I play with regularly tossed a nugget of wisdom at me the other day. They often have very controversial opinions IC -- and said, "but I always make sure to touch base on the OOC channel right away, make sure that people know that it's ok to call my char a dick when he's being one."

And maybe that really is all it takes.

I have to concur; one way to avoid the worst bleed is to play characters who are very much not you. I share some opinions and traits with all of mine -- but they are never the same traits, and I disagree dramatically with them in at least some ways. Even my most community building, socially responsible characters have aspects of personality that makes me want to grumble at them.

They are, after all, not me. And they're not meant to be.

I handle mine by generally trying to not be a dick -- and by keeping away from people who feel like they can't quite tell my character and myself apart. Unsurprisingly, my characters tend to end up spending a lot of time with people who share my OOC interests and timezone though, -- simply because we have a lot to talk about IC and OOC.

I'll say this: People who harp on about complete IC/OOC separation intimidate me. Mostly because it's so very often an excuse to be an utter dick IC. And then pull the "lol it's just rp" defence.

I realise this won't ring any bells outside Denmark, but that's a rather bloody huge cultural icon having gone on ahead.

My mother is horridly racist, for example. Bet your life I call her out on that shit loudly ever single damn time, IDGAF who she is.

So's mine. I don't have the strength to argue which is why I cut off all contact entirely (long story of abuse). Partner still picks up the phone at times though and good lord, the arguments. Because indeed, that shit needs to be called out every damn time.

@Cobaltasaurus Sorry to hear things didn't work out. This level of sci-fi is too sci-fi for my ability to immerse (which is why I didn't come over) but it sounded and looked like a good project. Thank you, 2020, for sapping people's will to live. 😕

I hope the next one works out better, and that 2021 will be kinder to it.

When the news come up with something like this:

      https://www.nzherald.co.nz/world/escaped-cloned-female-mutant-crayfish-take-over-belgian-cemetery/YZDGK4GTJKKML7Y76OELOTHGPA/

And a handful of different people independently send it to me, telling me this is so much about my character, and I have make it happen.

      It's happening.
