@testament And that's kind of the point, indeed. We can feel sorry for someone and agree that their situation is shit, but that still doesn't mean they get to assign us to mop and bucket duty.

Ugh, this is such a big deal in the chronic illness communities I'm in. People who play I Am More Sick Than You and assume that everyone who might be not quite as miserable -- or whom they believe are not as miserable -- are always available to clean up, to offer a shoulder, to give them anything they want. Because they're sicker than you, yo.

It doesn't work like that. If anything, distress makes people show their true colours.

@testament There's a very big difference between venting and asking for a bit of sympathy, and between your misery giving you a free pass to be an asshole.

An asshole is an asshole, no matter what issues they have.

@silverfox Anything from Stardew Valley to deeply complex simulation programs. In a MU*, it'd be daily tasks you have to do on grid to earn currency or plot bits or whatever the setup is.

For me this isn't a seller. Most MU's I've been on have not had NPCs or tasks or mini-games to do when no one else was around; unless one counts the rise of wiki's in the past 15+ years and prettying up the wiki as a minigame. I see this closer to MUD-type play and they do it better. Whether its farming, fishing, trading, econ, quests, mobs, interacting with old-school style 'AI' npcs, whatever. If I want these I'll go there or just get the app that fits my fun for minigame.

If no other players are around I'm probably moving on.

This. There are plenty single-player games out there, and they have better graphics. I play MU*s to interact with people and tell stories, to write, and to talk about what we write. If I want to kill time playing a simulation or resource management game, I'll fire up one that does it better.

I don't mind some semblance of these things existing in a MU*. I played MUDs for decades, and going to whack mobs with your buddies while chatting OOC is nice and social. But farming it alone -- again, there are better game options available. It all boils down to, for me, these are social games, and if I want to play solo, I can find better.

@olsson said in Why are there so many MUs set in Maine?:

I kinda wish we had some more games set outside of the US, personally, but I understand with the demographic why that's not the case.

Hear, hear. But there are so few European players that getting a player base for one would take considerable effort and it would still have to cater dis-proportionally to a US audience. I can't imagine what it'd be like, MU*ing from Asia or Africa or even South America sometimes.

@auspice Might not be someone reporting it. That happened to me too and it turned out to be a Chrome plugin infected with malware -- which Instagram detected and noped out on every time. Check your plugins.

Got my date at hospital finally.

      April 14.

I'll just... exist on 2 hours a sleep per night until then?

(Obviously going to dispute this but wtf, seriously).

    • RE: Holidays - What meant the most?

Fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue has taken away my ability to draw and paint, a hobby which I was pretty big on.

This year, my family got together to buy me a Cintiq. I don't know if this will make me able to art again, but I really, really, really appreciate their attempt to restore something to me that I lost, and really miss.

@silverfox Going to third this. The grid and its room descriptions need not be extensive, but they provide a lot of feel for the theme and the intended flavour of the game you are invited to play. It's a very powerful way to communicate where the focus is.

    • RE: How are you coping with COVID (and other 2020 fun)?

I was coping just like normal. I've spent the last 14 months too sick to do anything much but move from bed to sofa and back, so nothing much has changed for me. But I'll admit I am coping less than great with our hospitals shutting down all non-vital procedures for now because increasing pressure.

I understand why. It's just that after 14 months I finally had some light at the end of the tunnel, and that means a sentence of at least 2-3 more months in pain and fatigue hell.

Just going to go on escaping into virtual worlds everywhere.

Denmark shuts down completely from Dec 25. I don't disagree with the decision as such, but bloody hell, so mad at the people who made it necessary.

I've been in bed/on sofa for 14 months. Finally getting into treatment, finally looking at a diagnosis. And now all non-emergency hospital procedures are shut down until further notice.

Guess I'll just take a couple of months more.

Weird. Do you use a VPN or anything?

I do. Although it's been set to the same location for like six months. I suppose I could try turning it off, maybe they got more suspicious of VPNs in general. I just dislike, on my end, that feeling that everyone on the web needs to know my address, my email, and my shoe size.

Random disgruntlement: Instagram has been telling me my account is suspended 'for suspicious activity' (whatever the hell that means, all I do is look at posts) but they will verify it in 24 hours for 4 days now. How am I going to get my fix of my PB's bad jokes in Spanish?

Disgruntlement or reason to party? Not sure. Sometimes, a little bad news is good news. At least when it comes to finding out that no, 14 months of extreme fatigue is not depression. It's exactly what I've been saying all along -- and now the ultrasound agrees that my thyroid gland is enlarged and so full of cysts it looks like it's been shot with rock salt.

The damsel in distress character has always been my LEAST favorite ever.

But ngl, I'm cackling like mad over people wanting to protect my granny character. It's not that far from the same thing, so some mild guilt here but also.... I'm laughing so hard.

To be fair, she is a bossy and lovable character with lots of personality -- hardly a wilting flower fainting in random directions. 🙂

    • RE: Differences Between MUDs and Everything Else? (MUSHes, MUXes, etc)

@SparklesTheClown In my experience, coming from 25 years of MUDs to MUSHes just last year, the main difference is experience grinding and number chasing. The instant you reward people for essentially solving puzzles, killing mobiles and running around on the grid using their skills -- a lot of those people are going to base their RP on who has the highest combat skill, and think about nothing else. Which means, effectively, you have a number chasing game, not a roleplaying game.
