Just finished Rhythm of War and I really, really want a Cosmere game - despite the fact that I generally avoid games based on books, shows, or movies.

I would love that (but I have the same reaction to most of Sanderson's works).

An issue specific to this is how many things we still don't know about how the magic system works, what the next Words are, etc.

More generally though when a MU* is based on books (and especially an unfinished series) where the focus needs to be taken off of the canonical characters and shifted over to the PCs, funny things happen in the transition.

Yup, that pretty much lays out why I wouldn't make it, even as much as I'm hankering to play this game.

So, we know mega-multi-sphere WoD games tend to have players that are are overly aggressive and PITA's to play with.

We also know that Kingsmouth had a generally positive culture and got there using various larp-like systems, intensive staff-intervention, and restrictive character policies.

We don't know if the Kingsmouth model is the only way to achieve that end, because the vast majority of WoD games that start go the mega-multi-sphere PRP route and there's not a lot that have tried to add in some of Kingsmouth's systems or philosophies.

@faraday Notice I didn't specify open/private in the most recent post. I don't know if creating a live/asynchronous scene type is the answer or a third type of scene or keeping to the current public/private is the right way to go. If the hive mind says "A works best,". I'll defer.

Now, I won't go into all the reasons lest I derail the thread but if I had to take the current scene system and place variable timeouts in top of it, I would make the time out for open scenes really short and for private/closed scenes much, much, much longer.

@mietze Drawing a blank there too. If I write in a scene description and in a note at the top of a scene that this is a slow scene, expect so and so much time to pose, blah blah -- and people complain it's not fast enough, then frankly, no code is going to fix their refusal to read words.

This is why I keep coming back to wanting the ability to differentiate between timeouts for different scene types. If I set a really short timeout on one type of scene, it will naturally encourage more "live" play there, while I can be more relaxed on another scene type to accommodate people's desire for asynchronous play.

I get noting the pace, I always look for pace on a forum game (1 pose a week vs 2-3 poses a day or whatever), it helps me decide. Just an easy way to sort activity would be good without going complex.

Would something as simple as timestamps on poses when you open the scene be helpful then?

I'd argue against making anything too complicated, because there's a good chance when introducing anything new that people won't use it until it's been reinforced enough to be part of the culture.

It's also why my initial thought was just to build-in different timeouts to the already existing scenes (not that I'm sold on this being the best way). People already know to pick a scene type and this would nudge towards faster/slower engagement without the user having to worry about remembering one more thing.

I'm all about easing the burden on the average player as much as possible.

@faraday Not saying there can't be. I was more musing on the idea that it would be counter productive to have different types of scenes timing out on different paces.

I can see, for what I'm trying to do, wanting public and private scenes to have different activity requirements.

@Auspice Having a variable flag that allows scenes to stay open longer than an admin wants defeats the purpose, no?

If I want my game to favor live RP and not have aging scenes, I need to be able to make that decision as the admin. If you want a game that favors asynch RP and having aging scenes, you need to make that decision as a player.

That's kind of the root of my point: Ares isn't making these decisions; WE are.

I've given this some thought over the past couple of days and I feel like I want public scenes to time out rather quick. This is where people should be going for immediate RP right? But with private scenes, I'd be willing to tolerate a much longer time-out.

I love having outside presenters come in for PD webinars. When it's crappy and everyone is bored, it's so less stressful for me, then when I need to present the content myself.

If someone is on the portal in a scene, but not logged into the game, they don't show up on +where.

I mean if that's a big deal, I can add a "In Web Scene" section to +where, but most of the non-grid scenes are typically private anyway. I don't really understand how that "actively discourages" people from using the grid? You can still wander to the grid and start your own scene?

I don't know that it's necessary, because, again, I don' t think wandering the grid is the best way to find RP, even though I know why people do it. I'd rather make finding good RP better, but I don't think you need a strong grid to do that.

@bear_necessities I think you're mischaracterizing it when you say 'passively seek RP.' I know when I played on Ares, I was pretty pro-active on asking on the RP channel for scenes and still had issues finding RP. I talked about some of the reasons why then, I don't need/want to rehash them now.

To clarify, IMO people trying to find RP need to know:
1 - Who is available to RP.
2 - What that RP may be about.
3 - When they can expect that RP to happen.

RP Channel kinda gives that information, but does so poorly. Grids kinda give that information, but does so poorly. I'm pretty convinced there's a better way.

      @bear_necessities
So, one of the big stumbling blocks in the past has been the way +where works. If someone is on the portal in a scene, but not logged into the game, they don't show up on +where.

So, if someone wants to get a sense for what is actually happening on the game, they look at +scenes, not +where. This actively discourages use of the grid.

Which, again, is fine, because I don't think grid-stumbling is the best way to find RP, it's just the way many of us grew culturally use to because of the MUs traditionally operate.

As someone stumbling through trying to do my own thing with a very limited knowledge of coding. Yes, any plug and play option would be great.

For me, the draw of Ares was that most of what I needed (boards, WHO, etc) was already there. Even just getting closer to what would be considered a MU-in-a-Box with a tutorial for dummies on how to set up character sheets would be a great leap forward.

That being said, the main complaint against Ares is finding RP when you don't have an established clique. The grid helps solve that issue by giving the user helpful information like: 1. Who is currently looking for RP. 2. How active they are likely to be. 3. Some sense of the nature of the scene.

I don't think a grid is the best way to convey that information. Years ago, my non-coding self proposed a +wantrp command that added a line with proposed hooks to the end. If that same command automatically idled out after 15-30 minutes, it would provide the same info you get from +where on a grid system and might help provide some scaffolding for old-school players who are struggling with Ares.

@Coin Several people had said in the past that trying to find and start RP on Ares systems is difficult. I'm one of them, so I'm sympathetic to @LWhiskey's issue.

That being said, I haven't looked at Euphoria at all to have an idea on what is and is not working.

Man, y'all live it easy down Souf.

Homework guidelines tend to be 10 minutes per grade level starting in 1st. So 2nd grade would be 20 min, which most teachers divide between individual reading practice and math practice (in a workbook or prepared worksheet or online on IXL or something).

So yeah, I can see a second grading not carrying many books.

I will say that I've been playing with Ares again the past several weeks/months, and while I've always said code is not my thing, I went through the Ruby tutorials on Codecademy and through Faraday's code tutorials and I am feeling really confident in my ability to create a game using a different system.

Friday's my next day off and when I'll next really dive into code, so check back in after that >.>

Several weeks ago, I sent information on a virtual field trip we were hosting to our communications team, so they could add it to our weekly email of upcoming opportunities and advertised on our social media accounts.

On Monday, I noticed that no one had signed up. I checked in with comms. "We advertised it," they said, "There just must not be interest."

Maaaayyyybbeeee, I thought, so I checked in with the volunteer who was running it. What did he think, did he want to pull the plug? No, he said, maybe a class will sign up last minute.

Then, between 4 pm yesterday and this morning, we went from 0 sign ups to 4 times our current capacity. Leaving me scrambling to deliver what we promised.

I went back and checked all our communications channels. It had not been included in anything before 4 pm yesterday. Not a tweet. Not an email. Not an instagram post. It's supposed to happen 2 pm tomorrow.

      I'm a bit peeved.

@Ganymede I eye it now and again, but then I think it goes back to what @Sunny said earlier about coming in cold. I'd want to go where I know I'd find RP.

My last two Arx attempts fizzled because the amount of good, relationship-building RP I was getting on there wasn't worth the amount of grinding in that game.

That being said. If anyone wants to toss a character or a concept or come on to that game together, shoot me a DM.
