In this week of quarantine viewing, I, too, went down the Letterkenny rabbit hole. It was everything you all promised me it would be.

RE: A Lack of Imagination
@Rinel I can look at an image of a 3D shape and I will know that if you turn it one way or another how it would look, but I do all that without an image in my mind. I've never known how I know, I just know that, say, if you turn an apple on it's side, the stem would be sticking towards me.
In decorating my house, it's been interesting. For example, I know that I can fit two recliners into my living room, and have ample walking space and space to recline. I have NO CLUE how those recliners will look down there. Will they take up too much visual space and block my view of the woods? Will it be too crowded? Will it make my dark living room seem even darker? NO IDEA.
So I've decided when I find a model I like, I'm going to order one, shove it down there for a month or so before deciding if I want a second.

RE: A Lack of Imagination
Now that I'm thinking about it, I wonder if this is why I've always gravitated to text-based mediums over visual mediums, including MUs. I never really saw the point of MMO's because if I wanted RP, table top and MUs were just better, but maybe I just thought they were better because the visual aspect of video games isn't as important to my imagination as words are.
Also, I've always placed a really high value on getting into my characters emotional space and scenes with a strong emotional pull to them, and I wonder if that's, again, just a result of how I interact with the world.
And, like others have said, I've always struggled with descs. I spend hours looking for the perfect PB before making a character, because unless I'm looking at a picture of someone, I couldn't begin to toss together an image of what they look like. Even with a picture, it's a struggle, and difficult for me to get away from personality-driven words to describing the actual physical characteristics.

Holy crap.
This describes me. It's a thing? When other people say they picture something in their mind, they see an actual picture?

RE: Health and Wealth and GrownUp Stuff

I was hoping to have good well better I guess news to post here but...
Baby Isla was born at 159p Pacific time on 12/31. She had managed to pass some stool before, during or shortly after birth (right in the middle of birth South Lake Tahoe lost Internet and cell service for hours and hours so I aged 20 years stressing on WHAT IS HAPPENING and lots of other stuff happened so I'm not 100% on which which apparently makes a huge difference) so they were hopeful about her intestines at first.
Then my daughter fed her and it didn't go so well and rush imaging showed there's definitely a blockage so they've taken the baby to NICU and put her on IV and some kind of stomach vaccuum to get the stuff she ate out (so the obstruction doesn't grow) in preparation for surgery.
If all goes well she may be sorted out and healed enough to be home by February.
Does anybody know if (hospital in NV, residence in CA, if it matters) since she was born before 1/1 the deduction starts over or if it's on the 2019 one?
From one NICU family to another - YOU GOT THIS. The NICU is scary, especially at first, but the doctors there are the best in the hospital, and so are the nurses. Let them do their thing and just focus on being there and being present. Even when being there is taking turns rotating who is bedside and who is in the waiting room.
I got tons more advice, but none of it is important right now. Just be there.

RE: To OOC Room or Not to OOC Room (and Other Artifacts)
@Macha said in To OOC Room or Not to OOC Room (and Other Artifacts):
Right now, I'm in a scene that just popped up from people talking in the OOC lounge. Because people all were like. "You wanna do something?" And there's at least 3 people in this scene that my characters haven't had a chance to meet before now, but now they will.
Wouldn't it have been preferable to have that conversation on a channel though? There could have been someone already on grid waiting for RP, who was excluded from this scene and conversation because they weren't in the OOC room.

RE: Critters!
This regal girl is CJ.! I picked her up a week and a half ago and she's kept me far busier than I predicted!
Talents include:
- Being calm in her crate
- Chewing on things
- Stealing treats
- 'Sit' and 'Down'
Still working on:
- Going down stairs
- Walking in a straight line
- Not getting tangled in her leash
- Remembering that not everyone loves the rain as much as she does.

See the issue isn't whether there's a ST explicitly tossing plot around. It's the idea that players know in advance plot is available and, more importantly, when it will happen. There's a time and a place involved, so if they show up they are going to participate in... something.
In my opinion that kind of pre-scheduled 'plot scene' is almost universally horrible for everyone involved because it's just too many players in the same place at the same time. Unless the game is extremely small, I think it makes more sense to handle the plot like Arx does it where it by and large happens discreetly through bluebooking, private scenes and story emits.
^^^^This.
@Groth said in What game system would you prefer for a big-tent nWoD project?:
@Livia
The way RFK handled those beats was pretty manageable.
https://requiemforkingsmouth.fandom.com/wiki/Character_AdvancementI loved the way RfK handled beats. It's the only time it ever worked for me on a game. If I remember correctly, you could claim a beat for a short-term aspiration without having to toss that aspiration and think up a new one, which would solve much of the issue people seem to have with short-term aspirations.

RE: What game system would you prefer for a big-tent nWoD project?
Please don't take this harshly, because it's not meant in that way, just to get you thinking a bit more:
I have a lot of cynicism when it comes to WoD games, because IMO, the way the game is structured leads to lots of sitting and chatting in the OOC room and not so much RP. I have nothing against people who want to connect to a game and chat OOC, but if I can't find RP when I'm around and available to RP, then the game doesn't really work.
I honestly don't care about the system. I'd prefer not to have to constantly think up short-term aspirations, but it's not a breaking point for me. What is a breaking point is not being able to find RP.
With that being said, have you put any thought into what you're going to do in order to promote an active grid and prevent stagnation?

RE: The Dark Side of online Role-Playing
@Carex said in The Dark Side of online Role-Playing:
I'm not talking about your paranoid, nightmare scenario. I'm talking about what really happens on a real day-to-day basis where kids go online to things like Furry MUCKs and or Anime games and someone teaches them what the vagina is for.
I'm talking about the parents that try and stop that.
Parents should try and stop that!! A kid should not learn about sex and sexuality from some rando on the internet. That is NOT OK. That is setting themselves up for an abusive situation.
And if you are online and starting up a TS scene and all of a sudden you realize the person you're RPing with is so sexually immature they don't have the basic anatomy down, the correct thing to do is to stop. Advise them to talk about their issues with their parents or other trusted adult. Then let staff know there's a minor on the game.
Exploring sex is not wrong. But adults have a responsibility to all the young people around them to make sure that they are not exploring their sexuality in a way that is inherently dangerous.

RE: The Work Thread
While this is the teacher thread ...
I just wrote a piece on teacher self-care during the holidays. In my intro, I argued that teachers needed to keep their stress levels low because it will help them, but it will also help their students!
I kinda hate that this profession is so mired in martyrdom that I feel like I have to convince teachers that taking care of themselves is really just taking care of their students.
So, all you educators out there: Take care of yourself because you work hard and you deserve it.

RE: What Types of Games Would People Like To See?
@Lotherio I did really enjoy playing on 5th Kingdom. I don't remember my character, but I remember that I liked the game and the RP I found there. It really did match my preferred style of play.
I'm excited that you're thinking about bringing it back!

RE: What Types of Games Would People Like To See?
So, given my general dissatisfaction at the moment and inability to actually sink into a game, I've been thinking about this, and my answer is a bit different:
I very much want a game that really emphasizes the relationships between characters and makes them meaningful. The ability to create meaningful, deep relationships between characters is one of the strengths of MUs, IMO.
A lot of games recently have been putting emphasis on PRPs, and while building character relationships and participating in PRPs are not exclusive, I would like to see the same effort put into encouraging player interactions. Personally, I would rather have 1 deep, meaningful scene with another PC than 10 PRPs.

@Arkandel I think what people are trying to get at is that, just in case you've never been fat or struggled with significant or stubborn weight loss or haven't experienced losing weight and then regaining or other things like that, those comments really aren't anything that they've not heard before, usually spoken in a very condescending or dismissive way.
As I have had to say to doctors and other people in my life during times where I am heavy (I've been all over the place as an adult), "I'm FAT not STUPID thanks."
And as others have said, and doctors who specialize in the treatment of obesity can tell you, it's actually NOT that simple. So unless you want to hurt the person, I really honestly would advise not telling anyone that. It's okay. Someone else has already told them, trust me.
This. So much of it.
I've been told 'just count calories!' so many times.
You know what I've found?
I usually don't meet the 'amount to lose weight' calories in a day. I just looked up a calorie calculator. OK. Amount to eat per day to lose weight: 1924.
Amount of calories I've eaten today: 1534.And weekends are pretty high intake for me since I'm sitting around the house with the free time to cook. Most days would prob be closer to just 1000.
But I've gained weight over the past year. I haven't lost it.
Calorie counting, in my world, is a fucking laughable concept.
One study calculated that the average woman with PCOS doesn't lose weight without medical intervention unless she reduces her caloric intake to about 800/day. So if you're having trouble, it's not just in your head! It's a legit problem for us. Take inositol. See your Dr. about metformin.
