I feel like you're going to get a huge amount of STF refugees. This is like everything we wanted out of that game, but cooler!

RE: Layla's Playlist
I'm just super curious whether or not you gave the staff at StF permission to kill off your character, cause Sakura went missing like the first week I was on the game and I THINK ended up dead at the carnival?

RE: Game Theory: Mortal Horror
@zombiegenesis said in Game Theory: Mortal Horror:
1: Age. Would it need to be young adult to be captivating? Could you do "age spheres" such as High School, College, Adult and run plots for each?
I kind of like the idea of different ages. Especially if you have some plots just for teenagers and just for adults and can play with the 'teens don't talk to their parents/parents don't talk to their kids' angles that Stranger Things and just about every movie about teenagers plays on. The only problem is I would say don't DEFINITELY rely on that, because inevitably you get players who won't abide by that and it will just be frustrating. But I like the dynamic that could be played. Though I don't know that I'd make anything under 18. I feel like that's just asking for trouble. So....maybe just young adults/adults? Does anyone actually play people over the age of like, 30? Ever?
2: How often would plots need to be run? Let's say, for gits and shiggles, that I'm running a game and am also the only staffer running plots. I could only do so probably once a week, on Monday evenings. Would that be enough? Twice a week? Three times?
I've always been a big fan of Monster of the Weeks, whether they are a one-off or something that could be investigated into something bigger. That just makes sure that once a week, there is definitely something to do/RP about. Doesn't have to be combat, can be social. And then run larger things around that.
3: Player Run Plots. I'm a HUGE fan of PrPs. What tools would players want/need to run their own plots?
I really like the recent (well, recent to me, I've been out of this hobby awhile) trend of doing both RP hooks and plot hooks. Where staff posts that such and such is happening, if someone wants to either RP around it or run a scene around it, go for it! That also helps PrP runners come up with ideas.
If you're running plots regularly, people should get familiar with any system you're using pretty quickly. I realize this isn't always a popular opinion, but I am a big fan of rules where if you run a PrP or a plot your characters can't be in it. Cuts down on the LOOK AT ME I AM SO COOL behavior that can be so damn common.
4: Mortality. Should death be a very real possibility? Should players go into character generation knowing their PC could be short-lived? Should there be a "victim" opt-out option for players who don't necessarily want to have their characters killed (which may make them ineligible for some scenes)?
I think any staff plot is automatic "can die," but I think PrPs should be set to either death-consent or non-death consent. If only because I expect staff knows the system very well, whereas a new PrP runner might TPK because they don't have the balance they need yet. That way people who want plot but don't want the risk can just do the plots where death won't be an option, and people who want more risk can do the crazy scary ones.
5: The monsters. Strictly staff run? Should players be able to take on the role of "Suburban Vampire" for the length of a plot knowing that, in the end, he will be slain?
I think strictly staff run, with approved PrP runners given leeway that if they want to take on a villain for the length of a plot they can, they just have to run it by staff so that staff isn't doing a whole 'all vampires are evil!' thing and then Angel is running around the grid making all the PCs fall in love.
6: System. What system would work for this? I think WoD or the current edition of Call of Cthulhu would work fantastically.
I am no help here, I don't know annnnything about different systems. Sorry!

RE: Stranger Than Fiction MUX
It's down as of last week. Staff announced they were closing it, then they closed it.

RE: Stranger Than Fiction MUX
@soundofserenity Yeah, I'm pretty sure that's what got us all talked to. But instead of a constructive conversation, it was just all over the place accusatory "why do you hate the game/why do you hate Griffin" etc. Just for me and the other girl, though. The guy that got talked to about it got a very different conversation, funnily enough.

RE: Stranger Than Fiction MUX
A couple people said their MO is to open a game for like 6 months, get bored, and open another one. I think Lantern Hill was one? I've definitely never played on one of their other games, so someone else will have to confirm.

RE: Stranger Than Fiction MUX
I mean, when I joined the game here's what happened and it should have been a huge red flag:
A carnival came to town! It was part of a plot. They even built a place on grid for it. A board post said RP would get you into the plot! Me and two or three other people RPed there every. Single. Day. No plot hooks were thrown our way. Eventually, other people started grumbling about this. A new post was put up that people in Group A were getting first dibs on the plot, but to get involved just RP with them!
Someone on the public channel then pointed out the post didn't say WHO was in Group A so how was that possible? They were assured there would be a way in.
My character was a huge goody good, so I put a request in saying I'd like to try to talk to someone in charge to see if she could do like, a can drive donation one night to get people discounts on tickets and help!
No reply. Finally staff comes back and says that won't be possible. the people in the plot don't want any more people in it.
So. The original post was a lie, I guess? A bunch of people stopped logging in after that. I should've been one of them!

RE: Stranger Than Fiction MUX
I don't think I ever did point it out! Which is why it was so weird. I was mad because in the one plot I was in, someone showed up halfway through, didn't need to roll fear (half of us had failed it and spent the whole time unable to do anything but pose being scared--and no one pointed out we could've spent a karma to reroll it!), and of course, was the hero of the night.
I was Clara. And I was creeping up on Griffin's votes, which a couple of people jokingly told me was why they thought the game was shutting down.

RE: Stranger Than Fiction MUX
I'm pretty sure I was the most active person on the game and I would RP with everyone! Didn't ever once get me into any plots, though.
I assume you're talking about Griffin. The only plot I was ever in was a total clusterfuck that got me and two other people talked to...but not about how the plot was bad, about how Griffin's feelings were hurt because someone told some people that he had all the plots? Or something. I never actually understood what I was being accused of. Though he did! So, good on you, whoever also noticed that. I mean, the plots being run were actually listed on the front page of the wiki and he was in every single one so it's not like it was a secret!
The only thing I was guilty of was trying to sustain RP on a place that was pretty clearly dead on arrival.

RE: Stranger Than Fiction MUX
In a shock to no one that ever signed in more than once, this game has closed.

RE: Real World Peeves, Disgruntlement, and Irks.
I actually have an app on my phone called Hiya that will tell me if it's a spoofed/scam number. It's great! The spoofed numbers were really frustrating since I'd worry it was my kids' daycare calling since it would look like a local number. Now there's a little note under those numbers that says like: suspected scammer so I don't rush to answer it.

RE: Quinn's Playlist
UPDATED cause I remembered the name of the Buffy place and someone reminded me I played Anya there. Also StF.

RE: Encouraging Proactive Players
Maybe we all need to agree on the steps that we usually see/take:
- Event gets posted/shouted, people sign up/show interest.
- Event gets run, people show up and play!
- Players RP amongst themselves about things. Perhaps put in +requests for more information and followup (?)
- Another scene is run either because players have followed up, or plot runner has more to move it forward to try to get people involved (?)
- Repeat of steps 3-4 as necessary until plot runner gets burned out / until plot is finished (?)
So, is question how to keep that momentum going or how to inspire people who only want to do steps 1 and 2 to move onto later steps? Or both?
