    • RE: Dead Celebrities 2020

Ellis Marsalis Jr., father of Wynton and Branford Marsalis and accomplished jazz pianist in his own right. Huge name in Louisiana, especially New Orleans, and we won't even be able to honor him with a jazz funeral. He died of COVID-19 and there won't be a single second line for him, because of COVID-19.

That probably doesn't make sense to almost any of you, because New Orleans doesn't really make a whole lot of sense to begin with, but the enormity of it is... pretty overpowering.

      Guys.

      Zoom.

      That is all.

My firm does a zoom meeting every day at 1:30 to coordinate. It's rarely if ever over 10 minutes and frequently ends up just being the partners and whoever they need to talk to. I got bumped off the call after about two minutes today. It was amazing.

I am very happy with this arrangement. Everyone else appears to have bosses who think that productivity increases when employees are stuck in meetings.

Few people are talking about the economic outlook after the pandemic is over,

Shit, few people are talking about when the emergency measures will end. Part ignorance, part cowardice. There are still so many ways this can go. Worst case of ending measures early and not reimposing them, up to two million dead? Doing periods of controlled exposure to try and up herd immunity? Quarantine until a vaccine is ready in a year or two?

Hard to calculate effect when you don't even know the operative timeline.

We're in the middle of a effing pandemic, and yet the two biggest parties in America, Mardi Gras and Spring Break, went on as planned. No quarantine, no Shelter In Place, no 'hey, maybe this isn't such a good idea, packing bodies together like that'.

      AAAAAARRRRRRGH

I spent days working on a file before all this started.

It didn't save to the cloud for some reason.

Someone went into the office today to get a fax and went to save it to the cloud for me.

Bonus! If you don't like me, RL business has meant I've resigned from staff.

If you do like me, well, I still have a player bit! Hit up the hopeful lightbulb.

Better thing to do is just call our fellow white people out on their bullshit.

Work casually telling everyone to check out an hour later than I normally do, so now I get to casually ask my bosses whether that expectation applies to me as well.

Since working that extra hour will put me under minimum wage.

@Rinel Can you take my brain weasels? They need a new home. I don't like them.

Unfortunately I'm pretty sure my mental illnesses just tear apart and devour anything new that enters my psyche, so you'll have to find another, more loving home for your brain weasels.

I don't have a lot to offer, but I can give legal advice to people who need it in Louisiana. Mostly, this will consist of referrals to attorneys I know and trust.

Otherwise, if you're in Louisiana and you seriously need help, let me know, and I'll find a way to get you what you need. I've been here a long time and have contacts in most parts of the state.

People were panic shopping. They do this for storms too. Oh there's going to be a blizzard (that people live through every year) wipe out the stores of their stock and replenishment.

I went to the supermarket Friday. There wasn't any meat on the shelves. No chicken, no pork, not beef. Not even the cuts that are over $10.99/lb

I went shopping right before Hurricane Irene and then Hurricane Sandy the following year. It was business as usual. This is unprecedented./

      Agreed.
Having grown up in MD and lived for a while in SC: this is well and beyond what you get from a blizzard or hurricane.

Depends on the hurricane, tbh. A good cat 3 or 4 will see shelves emptied, too.

I'd love to play, I think. I would. I haven't played an alt in weeks.
But I can't. Associate is leaving the firm for better places. Work is piling up. Everyone's worried around me.
I owe taxes for the first time ever this year. I'm behind in some payments on my partnership purchase.
      Just not a good time.
      Considering permanent retirement.

FWIW I've very strongly considered quitting law the past few weeks, myself. In my case it's not really much of a choice because I can't get accommodations anywhere but where I work. So for now, I am stuck. But I feel you.
