I honestly do not think that simply moving from MUSHcode to Python (or Ruby) will make it 'orders of magnitude' easier.

      https://codecombat.com

This exists for learning Python. I have used it to teach teenagers, and I do not code. This truly is orders of magnitude easier than how we had to learn to use mushcode. This isn't even considering the fact that I can literally go take a class from a professional instructor, do a coding boot camp, buy any number of hundreds of books, watch instruction videos on youtube...and I could continue going on listing ways to learn, NONE of which exist for mushcode.

Motivated learner, apparently with the aptitude for programming and with access to quality instruction tools. Results not typical 🙂

Was just pointing out the futility of doing the same things over and over but expecting different results.

Are they really doing the same things though? Smashing the do you have a coder flowchart that has hindered the creation of games for 25 years. Making it orders of magnitude easier to learn to code, as @Tat mentioned. Creating a seamless web/wiki/game integration. These are things that, to the best of my knowledge, haven't been done before.

Naturally, any new product challenging the status quo faces an uphill battle. And yes, others have tried and failed. Does that make it futile? I don't think so, but everyone here knows my penchant for tilting at windmills 🙂

I honestly do not think that simply moving from MUSHcode to Python (or Ruby) will make it 'orders of magnitude' easier. Sure, it might help some folks, but IMO if you don't have the aptitude for coding, simply switching languages isn't going to make any difference. The problem is that doing anything non-trivial in /any/ programming language requires real skill. Non-coders probably won't have those skills, or be interested in developing them.

    • RE: Do you buy your RPG books?

I used to buy RPG books all the time from my local gaming store but when they finally closed, I started buying PDFs from DriveThruRPG. I also frequently purchase things from Bundle of Holding. I have so damned many PDFs now that I doubt I'll ever had the time to read them all.

I've gotten rid of nearly all of my actual books. After my last move, I swore I was never again going to be stuck hauling 500 lbs of books so I gave away or sold pretty much everything that wasn't special (ie my autographed copies of Vampire 1st and Battle Lords of the 23rd Century). Nowadays I carry around my entire RPG collection on my phone. Ain't technology wonderful?

I think it's important to keep in mind that neither Ares nor Evennia are bringing anything to the table that we haven't had for the past 25 years (except for the ability to code MU*s in Python and Ruby). Servers such as MOO, ColdMUD, DGD, and MUCK are every bit as capable (and are even superior in many respects) as their more modern counterparts but have largely been ignored because MUSH was easier and 'good enough'. Evennia and Ares are not going to reverse that trend, any more than ColdMUD and MUCK did.

This is coming from someone who has spent the last four months working on an Evennia based project 🙂

I, personally, would love the ability for players to be able to add to the game, even if just rooms, or an object that alters the desc if they want.

Players can build in Ares (and I presume Evennia) if you give them permissions. I don't have a quota currently but it would be easy to add one. And there are ways to alter descs, though not with objects. Evennia even has a quasi-softcode system.

In Evennia, you simply do @perm person=Builder and they are good to go. There's no quota system (Evennia doesn't really have any notion of object ownership, they simulate it with locks and such).
Evennia doesn't have any kind of 'quasi-softcode' system, unless you're talking about the online Python contrib?

@auspice I used to live in Laurel in the mid 90's. I'm about an hour and a half south of there now.

We got lucky here in Southern Maryland. They had been calling for up to 8 inches of the stuff but it all melted as soon as it hit the ground.

And yes, he can have all of mine, too.

They can't devote their entire attention to a traditional MUSH scene, but I'm willing to bet that a fair number of them could handle tossing out a pose an hour when they had a free moment. Add that up over a day or three, and you've got yourself a scene where previously there would've been none.

Given that scenario I'd probably choose to have no scene. There's just no way that a scene staged over the course of several days would be able to hold my interest. The pace is just too slow, I'd end up getting distracted by something else and forgetting all about it. This is why I never bothered with PBEM games or forum RP.

@faraday My perspective might be biased since I'm missing out on the hardline dinosaurs already by running evennia, as those folks wouldn't play on a new codebase anyways. But I personally feel that the amount of dinosaurs like that is pretty tiny compared to the people that would get introduced into MUs with a web only format. Downloading a client is a big bar for entry for some people, let alone archaic command line interfaces in telnet.

I agree with this whole-heartedly. I would encourage anyone attempting such a project to forget about the MU* community and just do it.

@thatguythere said in How much Code is too much Code?:

No experience at 8th sea so not commenting specifically on that game but in general anything that makes me pull up a browse destroys my ability to rp in the scene. Once I opens a non-client window on my computer my brain shifts into OOC mode completely. I know this is more my issue than any games but yeah once i open the window we might has well just summarize the scene because my poses will be detached as all hell.

Note I am not anti wiki at all besides being too lazy to keep my character pages up to date i love them, but I happily use them before and after scene not during.

This is exactly my issue as well.

This is what killed my interest in 8th Sea.

Anything that forces a player out of the game in order to access information vital to successfully playing that game, is a very bad thing. Save this for when the browser has completely replaced dedicated clients.

I somehow managed to miss this post until today.

I've actually played with Ares some but I ran into multiple issues installing it, and have so far, not even been able to get it to start. It looks promising, so I'll keep checking for updates.

You could probably build and run Penn on any modern Android device using Termux (you can get this from the Playstore). I have not tried this with Penn but I /have/ gotten Evennia to build and run on my LG G7 and a cheap Asus Chromebook that also supported Android apps using these instructions. I'm pretty sure that anything that can handle Evennia, can handle a simple MUSH server.

    • RE: Reasons why you quit a game...

I've mostly quit games because of staff. There was a time when I would try to put up with if I was still having fun on the game otherwise but these days I bail at the first sign of trouble. I simply do not have the patience to deal with crazy staffers anymore.

This made me remember how, as a small child in the US during the very early 80's, they taught us the metric system in school and told us we needed to know it because we (referring to the entire country) were supposed to be switching over to it. After that year, I never heard another word about switching, although they did continue to teach us both systems for the remaining years that I was in school. I have no idea what happened but it does seem like we were going to make the switch at one point.

For the brace wearers: do you find it pinches or puts a lot of pressure on your knee?

There is some pressure, yes. It was uncomfortable to wear for the first week but then I got used to it and now I don't even notice it.
