      @ganymede I didn't know that was a thing until I just googled it. The Amazon search algorithm didn't return it. What was your experience with it, if you tried it?

      I'm curious on this as well. With severe arthritis in my knee, walking 2+ miles 5 days a week has not been all that great. Some sort of brace/sleeve might be good.

      (If only there were something I could do for my hip as well.)

      A knee brace helped me a lot.

      My problem isn't usually the pain (I am managing this with Motrin for the time being, but my doctor is wanting to switch me to a real arthritis medication soon) it's the swelling, which makes my knee felt weak and unable to support my weight. The brace really helps with that. I can walk pretty much normally without worrying that my knee might give out at any time. I still have to use a cane when it gets really bad, but fortunately that's pretty rare (once or twice a year, maybe).

      Ah, the joy of being 40 😉

      Glad to see another Ares game!

      Full disclosure: Ares is still under development and has not yet been released. It's pretty stable - BSGU has been running without major issues for a long time -
      but it's still a work in progress. Kraken and the 8th Sea staff have been working with me on sort of a "private beta" basis to help shake out configuration/customization and admin issues. (I'm not directly involved in the game though.)

      If I had known that you were open to people running "private beta" games with AriesMUSH, I would have hit you up ages ago!

      Why am I paying $89.95 a month for so-called business class cable internet that is so slow and unreliable that it's not even suitable for MU*ing most of the time?!? I don't even have the choice to switch providers, because there is only the one >.<

      Monopolies are fun.

      Hey, I don't even have one. I tether through my phone. Feel grateful you don't have that nightmare!

      But seriously, that sucks.

      I would be so happy if I could do that! Unfortunately, I have Sprint and my neighborhood is inside a so-called Sprint 'dead zone'. I can't even get 3g here.

      Sprint will actually give you an 'extender' in your house (it does use your internet, so unfortunately it might not be of benefit for you 😞 ) if the tower doesn't reach you.

      My parents had to do this because their house is in a dead zone, too.

      You know, I applied for one of those and was denied. They told me to call the center to discuss other options. When I called and talked to them, the other options consisted solely of suggesting that I turn on WiFi calling.

      I'm sorry if I struck a nerve, but I stand by that statement.

      By no means did I mean to imply that MUSHers are any worse than any other group of people on the net. I meant it was worse because the hobby is based around cooperative storytelling, and most of us seem to accept things such as inclusion and acceptance of others as virtues. You wouldn't think that such a community would be so damned hostile.

      I don't find the toxicity WORA was known for "entertaining" and I have a pretty low opinion of people who do, and it frustrates and discourages me that big meltdowns like the UH X-Men drama tend to draw new faces who want to see more of the same.

      Yeah. I get that @Arkandel has no intention of doing away with the hog pit. That's the mods' right and it is not my intention to beat a dead horse.

      But I will say this: We talk sometimes about the future of MUSHing, about how hard it is to draw in new players, etc. As someone who knows writers who might be interested, who has a daughter who some day might be interested... I can't in good conscience invite them into a gaming community that is so darn toxic. And I'm not just talking about MSB here, because the same attitude that feeds the Hog Pit pervades the games too.

      Now it's not all bad. But it is pretty disheartening.

      In fairness, it's not a MUSH problem, it's merely a reflection of how entitled and self centered we have become as a society.

      Go to any MMORPG, even ones like LoTRO which do not even offer PVP as an excuse to attract asshats, and you'll find the exact same attitudes. Any forum lacking determined moderation will quickly turn into an all-out 'forum PVP' zone. Work with the general public like I do and you'll find the exact same attitudes in many of your customers. It's becoming the norm, both online and off.

      Granted, it's much worse in the MU* community given it's smaller size but I think this is due to the fact that we, as a community, are not well people. It speaks volumes about the state of our community when the only forum for open discussion of MUs and MUing focuses so heavily on vengeance, shaming and WrongFun. It's no wonder there are so few new people coming into the hobby. Between the general toxicity of the community and the craziness of so many of the folks running games, it's a wonder there are any active games left at all.

      Here at the local county lockup, there's no a/c except for Main Control and Booking. Let me tell you, between the heat and stank, it gets downright nasty in there during the summer. Especially C pod (all females), for some reason.

      This is according to my SO, who has worked at the county jail for the past 16 years. I've never set foot in it, personally.

      I am a General Manager in the retail sector. My company gives me 80 hours of PTO per year, 40 of which I can get a check for if they are not used , but I lose the other 40 if they are not used by Dec 31st. I'll be burning through as much of the remaining 40 as I can between now and the end of December. Time used so far this year: 4 hours, and that was for a doctor's appointment.

    • RE: Fallout MU*

      @surreality said in Fallout MU*:

      @tat The last time I tinkered with it, it had the <verb> <preposition> <target> format. I know people have changed things since to allow mush-like commands, but that all came lonnnnnnng after I last played around in it. I know the folks that did Truelands did a ton of conversions along those lines, at least.

      It still is, since the command parser is hardcoded into the server. You can bypass it however by processing the args yourself. For example, MUSH-style switches are fairly easy to do (off the top of my head):

      #6:@org*   any any any
      set_task_perms(player);
      if ((i = index(verb, "/")) == 0)
        cmd = "do_org_list";
      else
        cmd = "do_org_" + verb[i + 1..$];
      endif
      if (!$object_utils:has_callable_verb($org_utils, cmd))
        return player:tell("ORGS: No such command. See help @org.");
      else
        $org_utils:(cmd)(@args);
      endif

      If you declare your verb with the args "any any any" then the command parser will not attempt to break your command into <direct object> <preposition> <indirect object>, you can do the processing yourself (all the args will be accessible in the args[] array). This will give you MUSH-style commands, only with a lot of extra work. personally, I wouldn't bother. IMO If you need to modify the server to make it work like a different one, you're using the wrong server.

    • RE: Fallout MU*

      There's actually an Evennia based project in the works based on the Fallout franchise. I'm not 100% certain how far along it is since I only just got involved with it a week ago and all I've really done is work on their D20/OGL chargen, but what I've seen so far looks rather nice.

      I'll leave it to the game owner to advertise the address and such.

      Edit: I've been told that it's not Fallout per se, it's based on the Exodus RPG, which started out as an official Fallout game but after legal disputes with Bethesda and Interplay, was ultimately released with a generic post-Apocalyptic setting instead. The game owner described it as "Fallout with the serial numbers filed off."

      My worst experience to date involved an elderly man who rushed into the shop I work in now in desperate need of a bathroom. I let him use our employee bathroom, and had no idea that anything was wrong until I had to use the bathroom myself a few hours later. That's when I discovered the mess. It was like a crap bomb had exploded a few feet above the commode. I swear to God, it was like those pictures of the Tunguska Blast in Russia, only with crap instead of trees. I figure he cut things a bit too close and lost control before he was able to sit down. You'd think he would have had the common decency to say something to alert me to the problem on his way out but I as I recall, he left the store without even saying "thank you". To this day I have not let another customer use the employee restroom.

      When I was in my late teens, I was a shift manager at Roy Rogers. Cleaning the customer bathrooms was a normal part of my close routine, so I got to see the difference first hand. The women's bathrooms were always much worse than the men's. There would be hair stuck to damned near everything, the sink, commode, walls, you name it. There would be bits of tissue paper everywhere, discarded wrappers from mysterious feminine products I couldn't begin to guess the purpose on the stall floors. The most I had to worry about with the men's room, was 'poor aim' and then the mess was isolated and easier to clean.

      @ghost I was utterly shocked when I was talking to an Indian coworker a year ago and realised she didn't know who Superman was. She didn't even recognise the name.

      But then it also occurred to me there was no film I could recommend that she watches. The original one maybe? But it'd look so dated now.

    • RE: Character Information: Wiki or Mu*?

      Call me old and stuck in 2003 but I really do think that everything needed to play a game successfully should be accessible from within the game itself. I don't think that you should ever have to leave your MU* client in order to do something on a game. If you do try to make me do this, I'll just go play somewhere else.

      Now, if you have some kind of coded system that automatically puts my character's info into your WIKI with no involvement from me (for lazy people who can't be bothered to read my @desc or @bio), go for it. As long as I don't have to mess with it, I could not care less.
