    • RE: Searching for Star Wars RPI

I wasn't going to mention this because the project is still in it's infancy, but since we're talking about systems for use with Star Wars MU*s, I figured, what the heck?

I am currently involved in the construction of a Star Wars MU set during the time period of the new movies. We had originally intended to use the FFG system, but decided against it due to the complexity of the dice mechanics (and a few other reasons). SAGAs was not an option because none of us cared for D20 and D6 was just so... dated.

We ended up going with a custom system based on QuestCore. QuestCore is often described as a 'crunch lite' system aimed at fans of D20 who want simpler and better mechanics. It's simple to learn, easy to code, and works very very well for MU*s, at least IMO. I'm curious to see how well it works in actual practice, but we have a lot of work to do yet before we'll be ready to open for testing.

@Alzie Some of the staff that fled GoD when it imploded, used the db to make a new game, minus Vaapad. It's technically a completely different game, and a pretty good one, from what I have seen so far.

I've played on and off since launch. I'm suprised that they discontinued the Mac client. I played it on my two year old iMac and never had a problem.

@Cupcake I find that Checker's burgers are lacking in taste and texture, and they overdo it with the seasoning that they use (which, I suspect, is mainly MSG). Wendy's has better burgers than Checkers, IMO. Sonic is 'meh', but better than DQ. We recently got a Red Robin, but I havn't eaten there there yet so I have no idea how 'gourmet' their burgers really are.

Five Guys is my first choice if I am in the mood to kill $20 for lunch. Wendy's is my second, and bringing up the rear, Burger King, with their tasty Bacon King.

Five Guys is awesome but damn, $16 for a bcb, small fries and small drink is a bit much 😞

Respectfully, I believe you are missing the point. The goal with this sort of project is to make things more accessible, and perfect is the enemy of good.

I'm not asking for perfection 🙂

I'm merely suggesting that it be done well, so that a few years from now, experienced MUSHers won't log on to a new game, see they're running a stock "Ash's Starter DB", groan and disconnect because they think it's bloody awful.

    • RE: New Start Databases

@Ashen-Shugar I honestly feel that we have enough choices already. Penn users have Volund's code suite, Talvo (Mike's) code suite and Faraday's starter DB, in addition to a handful of publicly avaliable DBs such as Rince's WCRH db. MUX has SGP and MUXcore, plus various (mostly) WoD-centric dbs. TinyMUSH can use any of the MUX starter dbs (with minimal modification required). Rhost has Volund's and SGP.

Either of these will give you a decent (if not great) set of basic globals that you can easily extend and customize. What would you include with a "standard starter db" that isn't in one of these, that isn't very game specific?

I feel that starter DBs should be specific to a codebase. I feel they should be designed in such a way as to take full advantage of the unique features of their target codebase and to demonstrate "best practice" for same. You simply can't get that with a generic codesuite.

@RnMissionRun Four then. It's totally possible, technically-speaking, but is anyone really that desperate for FS3 + MUX that they need to suffer? Spare yourself the pain 🙂

I saw it as an established, fairly well-known and -working- system suitable for use with a wide variety of games. It seemed a better use of time to port it (since I really, really did not want to use PennMUSH for my project), than doing something from scratch.

      I was wrong 🙂

Anyway, you're now the third person to have tried to port my codebase over to another platform and given because it was too much of a pain. I'm pretty much declaring it a lost cause at this point 🙂 And with all my efforts focused on AresMUSH, I'm not terribly concerned if it ever makes it to the RHost or MUX platforms. But thanks for trying.

I've made two attempts also, with the same result.

TinyMUSH has Ambryl's latest softcode-starter in it.

Actually, TinyMUSH doesn't come with a starter db anymore. It used to come with Amberyl's MUSHCore but the links to that went dark years ago and I have not yet been able to find a copy anywhere. Most of the best features from that are extant in MUXcore, which works very well with TinyMUSH. You will, however, have to change certain bits of code that use MUX's @if command, to use @switch instead since TM3 lacks @if (I do have a module that adds @if and a few other missing things, if anyone is interested).

    • RE: Wiki and You

I guess I'm kind of old fashioned in that I feel that everything one could need to play the game should be accessible from inside the game. Also, I really really dislike it when I log on to a new game, have questions and staff point me at a wiki page. I suspect that's just me though.

It's definitely a problem with GCC, maybe GenesisMUDS is using an ancient version? I'd be curious to know the output from 'gcc --version'.

I suggest that you connect to mush.pennmush.org:4201, join the HardCode channel, and/or talk to Mike. He's one of the PennMUSH devs and if he can't help you, no one can.

@Jennkryst said in Issues with SimpleMu:

The hardest part of switching from SimpleMU to MUSHClient was getting used to the up arrow being previous sent, instead of ctrl+p. I still fuck that up regularly, because I JUT WANT TO NAVIGATE THE INPUT WINDOW. Also, you could have as many windows as you want open, and all of them will be listed across the top bar (while MUSHClient limits me to a paltry 10).

Go into Configuration->Commands->Keyboard Preferences. Uncheck everything in the "Arrow Keys" section, then check everything in the "Compatibility" section. You can now use cntrl-p and cntrl-n to navigate your command history.

+1 for Duckclient. It has a lot of features (triggers, command recall, logging, just to name a few) and is also very customizable. Thanks for the link, Ixokai!

    • RE: Chromebook MU* Clients?

I am not aware of any clients that run natively on ChromeOS. You still have a couple of options. There is a way to run Android apps on ChromeOS which will enable you to run Blowtorch or a similar Android app. These apps are probably ok for casual use (chatting, checking mail and etc) but not for serious RP or programming. Another option is to install the SSH app from the ChromeOS appstore and use it to connect to any shell accounts you have access to (your MU* host, perhaps) to run TinyFugue. This will allow you to MU* from a tab in your browser. It works very well, assuming you are comfortable using tf.

@RnMissionRun Well consider this a single voice in a lonely universe saying you guys should do it! Before (or in and around) ToS sounds perfect for that kind of stuff, considering the universe isn't as settled into a status quo yet.

The choice of time period to make it possible to integrate with Star Trek: Discovery when it comes out in the spring. We're hoping that the new series renews interest in TrekMU*s in general.
