@kitteh I mean, I wasn't placing it up there as a gold standard, I was going through it because I think you were kind of making a claim that the diplomatic efforts there were over in the blink of an eye when actually it has been an ongoing process from back in Alpha. I was explaining it to object to the inaccuracy that seems to be a part of your concerns, because if people have concerns we should all make sure we're on the same page of accuracy so that the most constructive form of the conversation can happen.

Honestly the impression I'm getting is that you have a limited window of experience and you're kind of making extrapolations based on that. Like, a lot of the baddies out there aren't actually super black and white like you mentioned before. All of these things aren't clear cut with only combat as the option. So maybe folks need to dig sometimes to get at the truth, but there are lots and lots of options here. There are probably also a lot of socially- and diplomatically-weighted actions that have been taken that don't necessarily become public. So like, when I read you're stuff, it feels a bit like you're saying "Diplomacy doesn't have a big place on the game right now because of X and Y reasons" and I'm like "But X and Y aren't actually true/accurate?"

Also you say that it doesn't hurt to ask, but most of the time you're not asking questions about the new proposed stuff, you seem to be kind of making worst case assumptions about a bad way of doing it and say you don't want that. I mean, I'm not on staff, but it does frustrate me a little just to witness.

I will say this re: the Nox'alfar and the Nox treaty. Once we finally got to the point where it was officially happening, it did end up going pretty swiftly. But that was at least half a year, probably more, after our initial contact with the Nox'alfar happened. There were social rolls to even convince the Nox'alfar to come treat with the Compact. When they came the first time, there were some major diplomatic disasters that had the Nox'alfar walking away from the table and taking their potential special weapons with them. It was good social skills that managed to get some of those weapons at all, and they didn't go into the hands of the noble leaders who had been treating with them before. We had a whole war, and then the Nox'alfar started playing games (killing folks in the forest for fun) and there was a whole diplomatic process to bring them back to the negotiating table. And then there was the actual treaty negotiations which were, granted, pretty short. (Because the new treaty largely followed the old one.)

So there's also a perception issue here. But it's a situation in which there were consequences for flubbing the social/diplomatic stuff, and then victories earned by socially-focused PCs. It happened over the course of many months, and different people were involved in different parts of it. But the PCs who did the best in the situation were the socially-focused ones.

As to the systems: I know that prestige decay is definitely going to be a big thing.

Yeah, I'm a little confused by "there is too much focus on combat characters" but also "I don't like the idea of social systems based on my assumptions of what they are."

@auspice Give it three episodes to see if you like the premise. Understanding that there are a lot of things going on right under the surface that start bubbling up in Season 2 & 3. It really is one of the deepest most thoughtful shows on TV right now ... despite being a musical comedy.

I can't even look at the screen with shows/movies re: second-hand embarrassment. If it's one of those shows that leans on it as a primary source of moving plot, it's probably not a show for me.

I wouldn't say that it leans on it. It's most definitely not The Office or something like that. But it does have a lead character who makes a lot of bad decisions.

@wildbaboons Yeah, definitely not wanting to turn it into a "who can ASCII/color text the best" contest. It'll be about embracing theme, regional styles, etc.

I honestly think Crazy Ex-Girlfriend is one of the best shows on television right now. It's incredibly intelligent and it does some serious deconstruction.

I had no idea that was even an option!

Well, I don't think it's a general action, I think that it was more @Sparks saying, "If you really want to ask staff for a bit of a refresh because you're an investigative character, do so in a more focused rather than general way." But not that the request would necessarily be granted.

As to the fashion/clothing thing: there's a weird thing I've noticed where "system that exists that offers some sort of benefit, however minor" suddenly equals "this system is necessary to use to WIN." Which really doesn't have to be the assumption. The idea, as far as I can see, is to build different systems that appeal to different interests and also to give different types of characters some coded areas to use their skills.

@aria I think Josh has been through the process of being slowly deconstructed on the show, but they haven't gotten to the point yet of basically rebuilding him and letting him mature. Because holy hell yes he is so fucking immature. I miss Greg a lot, but he needed to get away from Rebecca in order to grow. Maybe if they stayed away from each other for a couple years, they'd be able to be healthy together, but alas. 😞

Thanks! I asked on the info chan about how to get nick to do this, and the impression was that it probably wasn't possible. Much obliged.

No problem. I'm surprised that was the impression.

I'm the guilty party, but I thought @fortydeuce was specifically looking for a name alias situation, wherein he could set an alias just for a person's name and have it work anywhere. Not just paging a specific person. Or I would've started looking at setting up a page alias!

@fortydeuce said in Coming Soon: Arx, After the Reckoning:

Side thought: as an investigate-heavy PC with no retainers and at least a week or two's wait before being able to get any, it would be cool if investigate-heavy PCs could have another slot opened up to @investigate or @helpinvestigate, especially while we don't have any retainers to do the dirty work for us.

Unfortunately, I doubt that one's going to happen; staff has had to do a whole lot over the months to throttle the rate of investigation to something manageable for them so that they're not creating quite so many clues every single week. Having a high investigation does give you the benefit of starting investigations at a much reduced cost. (Characters with Investigation 0 spend 50 AP, whereas characters with Investigation 5 I think have it all the way reduced to 25, along with the reduction in social resources.)

      • Does the startup gear (I forget the command) include stuff you can have made from crafter PCs? If not, it should, as it would be a nice way to RP with them and get them some decent crafting tasks while new PCs have money to burn.

The startup gear command is startgear. The point of it is that you can use it to create stuff your character would already come in with, and it was also created when there was way fewer PC crafters with shops around. In any case, you can just startgear/refundremainder to cash it out and go straight to a crafter.

      • I'm still not sure how journals work (not white vs black, but the thematic nature of them). I play a PC that probably wouldn't do much writing in journals, and I don't OOCly see the point, to be honest. But, from references made, they seem to be IC as much as OOC. Will I get penalized for not using them?

Check out the Vellichor helpfile if you haven't already. Journaling is basically a religious directive that is hugely commonplace for the society, so there's another layer beyond the instinctive "would my PC be a journaler in terms of my own sense of what journaling is." Most characters are going to have grown up with this being a part of their everyday lives from childhood.

They are IC in that White Reflections are housed in the Archives and accessible to anyone who wants to read them. Black Reflections are private forever and ever (unless you will them to be released upon your death and then -- die). But you can write whatever you want in your Whites, really, that you feel comfortable being public ICly.

There's also nothing wrong with mostly or entirely writing Black Reflections. You won't be penalized for not writing anything, though. You just won't get the XP.

      • I have zero interest in pretty ANSI described clothing. Is there a functional bonus to wearing a fancy tiara? My PC is in the "wouldn't bother IC" camp, but if there is a functional reason (does it affect stats?) for him to have better clothes (I know steelsilk etc., but the rest of it?), let me know.

When there are social systems, there will be a bit of coded benefit for fashionable characters in terms of prestige and the like, but that specifically also won't just be a contest of "who has the prettiest ANSI/ASCII," it'll be about embracing thematic elements and the like.

So no, there's not a functional benefit to having super pretty ANSI.

Also, I'm Derovai (at least 2.0, maybe 3.0). Hi.

    • RE: The limits of IC/OOC responsibility

@magee101 I'm telling you that that definition isn't actually a MU* standard. Lots of games I've been on have called anyone who is running a plot a GM. I'll agree that someone in a leadership position should have a firm grasp on the game rules and theme, sure. But whether or not they need to be plot creators is very dependent on the game and how plot flows in the game. A lot of my experience is with leadership PCs helping to navigate plot being directed at them by other sources, often staff. They don't need to be creating plot themselves.

On a tangentI wonder (some of you such as @Ganymede might be able to answer this) if it's the same for theatrical productions. Do actors root for their characters and try to push for them to win? Do they view directors - which I assume is the closest thing to storytellers - as means to get what they want for those characters, or obstacles to their success?

Are there any parallels between the two activities, since that would be a community with some similarities to ours, but unlike it with centuries worth of history we can tap as opposed to this fledgling little hobby of ours that didn't exist two days ago.

100% no. That's not at all how theatre works. Improv is a better thing to look at, because it's built on collaboration to make the best experience for the audience and is built on the rule of "yes, and." That rule at least is one that I think RPers can learn something from.
