Unless you are actively participating in a development effort (like Griatch and team seem to be), I wouldn't hold my breath.

I mean, there are multiple developers in this thread. I also know of people who have actively worked on what a build like this would look like. So. Yeah I'll feel free to keep talking about it.

There's no actual reason why a web-based RP game couldn't have the same pacing as a telnet-based one.

I mean, I would expect that if someone truly started designing an entirely web-based MU* experience, that it would involve visual or audio notifications for things like new poses. Activity notifications are the real reason I pay attention to my client, not that it's in a separate window as my web browser. I too don't want to have the less immediate RP experience as PBP or whatevs, but there's no real reason why a web-based experience has to be that and can't have a similar notification setup as a client. Or an even more precise one, really. Imagine different sorts of notifications for different sorts of activity: one for posing, one for chat, etc.

But, like... isn't that what they kind of do now?

Ok, so, for example -- you, based on background, think that this play is more meritorious than some critics do. But they also don't share the background.

We all do this from time to time, and time can change those opinions.

I loved Brokeback Mountain when it came out. I thought it had an important message. I still do. And I was pissed when critics canned it.

??? It has an 87% on RT, that's not really canned.

The problem with critics, is the fuck they know what /I/ like. They are presenting an opinion piece, that's it, their opinion is not any more valid than mine or anyone else's.

      But it really should be.

I expect my critics to tell me something more than what I can see for myself. Just like a teacher or professor, I want their piece to be more than an opinion. I want it to be an educated opinion.

Yeah, 100% agree here. And really, being a major theatrical critic used to mean this. A higher level of education about the artform. That's unfortunately changed over the years.

very little code is invisible. (Help being one example that is... but, well, it's not like you're going to do away with your help system even if nobody happens to be using it very often. I hope :))

No, but you might move it off game. I'd actually be super interested in how many people do help/detail on Ares to get the full file, for example, vs following the web link.

I've seen too many people on the forum express a preference for having all the information on the game versus having to look at the website for something. Given that, especially on a codebase like Ares where information is shared between the two, there seems to be little reason to make it inaccessible on the game.

So, we are at loggerheads. I saw a fantastic show. I think this is what is so very lovely about musical theatre, personally.

Seeing yourself in art, and finding that personal connection in a theatrical piece, is really the most important part in the end. I have plenty of plays and musicals that I think "this is not the best show around, but it hit me DEEP and nothing will change that fact."

    • RE: Real World Peeves, Disgruntlement, and Irks.

@ganymede That's a great article, and I remember reading it when it came out last year. Trust me, I wasn't arguing for Miss Saigon, which is a wildly racist show, and I wasn't arguing that Broadway doesn't have a serious fucking diversity problem, because it does. All I was saying is that the reason Allegiance didn't get rave reviews is because it wasn't a great show. Broadway has a total habit of being like very very slightly better than Hollywood in some regards and then spends forever patting itself on the back for it. Allegiance opened in one of the most diverse seasons Broadway has had in a long time, and I know and hate that the industry is going to be resting on those laurels for a while.

And let me be clear: when I say that I don't think Allegiance was a particularly great show, I'm not talking about spectacle. It's been a while for me since I saw it, but for me I found the score underwhelming and the book a bit pedestrian. (As far as I remember.)

But the tough thing about Broadway is that it's a business, and going into the arts professionally, that part is a tough lesson to learn. There's very little room for "deserve," because at the end of the day, the shows that make it to Broadway are the shows who can raise the capital, and the shows that continue to run on Broadway are the shows that make enough money to stay open. Broadway is not the hub of artistic progress it likes to think it is.

I'm really glad Allegiance exists and made it to Broadway, though. Whether or not I think it's actually a good show. (I mean, I don't think it's HUGELY TERRIBLE.) Because I think it's an important show for all the reasons you stated. And there's SO MUCH to be said about the racial and gender makeup of the major theatrical critics. That is also a hugely important conversation for Broadway to continue having. (When the New York Times' second string theatre critic was let go rather DRAMATICALLY this year, there was a lot of hope for a bit of diversity with his replacement that didn't pan out.)

I both think Allegiance was an important show to produce and also think that Allegiance wasn't particularly good.

@ganymede Allegiance got mixed reviews because it's a middling show at best. I'M SORRY. It was a really important show, and I'm glad I made it to Broadway (which is where I saw it), but I was also sad that it didn't end up a better show, since it was tackling such an important story. That was my biggest disappointment, to be honest. I wanted it to be fantastic, and for me it was, at most, okay. And I love that cast, man. Telly's such a sweetheart to work with! I was rooting for them. 😞

@faraday said in How should IC discrimination be handled?:

That seems kind of extreme. Just because I, as staff, wouldn't inflict Random Typhoid or Random Fires or Random Murder or Random Racism on somebody doesn't mean that typhoid and fires and murder and racism don't exist in the theme.

Okay, so why is bigotry different in that a player should have to put up with it on a non-consensual basis? If your character can't get sick without consent, or can't have their IC house burn down without consent, what makes it okay for the players of those characters to have to sit through abusive language and situations based on race, orientation, etc?

Oh my God. Literally where has anyone said that a player should be forced to sit through that? Discrimination existing within a theme =/= Every player is forced to sit through shit they don't want to sit through.

You are repeatedly vilifying anyone in this thread who indicates any support of allowing IC discrimination to exist in the theme, despite your occasional assurances that you're not trying to "enforce" anything. People have already said multiple times "players shouldn't have to submit to scenes with abusive language that make them OOCly uncomfortable," it's just that people aren't saying "we will never include any real world IC discrimination on this game" that you seem to be objecting to. There is so much space in between "there is no IC discrimination allowed on the game" and "you will be forced to interact with all IC discrimination no matter how abusive or pervasive," and nearly every game I can think of is going to exist between those two extremes.

It would be much more productive to talk about "what are the most effective ways/tools we can use to help people navigate when there are thematic issues that hit too close to home for them OOCly and help people to play in a collaborative manner that's fun for everyone." Which is not the conversation you're having. Your conversation seems to be "there is no reason why anyone should want to engage in these themes on a game."

@deadculture I don't remember the details of the character trying it. Some noble. But it was right in the main, public area of the Temple. She was sitting in the pews praying, he sat next to her, and a pose or two later had a hand under her dress trying to... well, I'll leave it there, before I went scrambling.

      sigh

I'm pretty sure the noble privilege shit started during the Taleo era. Of course, trust Gold Dragon nobles to take it to fucking eleven.

As a person who PLAYED a gold dragon noble, I don't like being painted with broad strokes of a brush like that. Not every Gold Dragon noble was a skeezy fucker. In fact, it was kind of weird when I took the character how fast people /wanted/ me to take noble privilege with them and I was like... no. Am kinda glad my character ended up dying in war, never went back.

Heck it was Firan, maybe my denying people their rape RP was what got me killed.

      lol is this really #notallgolddragonnobles

@Collective and I are surely not saying it now, but it's sure being addressed like we are.

I seriously don't know what you're talking about. Who do you think is misrepresenting what?

      I see:

@collective said in How should IC discrimination be handled?:

And yes, I know my characters are not me. But I also don't think it's entirely unreasonable to ask why the 'right' to be vile and hurtful to other people is so much more important than anyone else feeling welcome in a given environment. Because those words hit the players with the same force they hit the characters sometimes.

That certainly comes across to me as saying that it's bad for people to argue for the "right" to have IC -ism in their games. And there have been other comments in this thread to that same effect. If that's not what was intended, then it's just a miscommunication.

I took it to mean that it's bad for people to insist they should be allowed to force this RP onto people who don't want it.

      Factually incorrect.
I labeled something 'NOT MOD VOICE.'

This is also MSB. People are sarcastic at every turn.

It's really not surprising that people would expect mods to not be sarcastic or condescending about the actual modding part of their forum participation. I mean, I'm not sure what you expected to happen when people were expressing overt (and, yeah, aggressive) concern about the moderation changes and your response was to get sarcastic about it. I mean. The same negative response would happen on a MU* if a staffer did that.
