RE: Indulgence of the Night
My current indulgence is a new dress, shoes, and bag, and a hair and makeup appointment for a big fancy work event on Sunday. (The makeup appointment at least is free -- my roommate just happens to be a makeup artist and made a general 'if you ever want!' offer months ago.) But I haven't had an event like this to get all dressed up for in ages, so it feels pretty great.
For consumables, I'm sure hoping that they'll have Hendrick's Gin at the open bar.

Myrddin's +bbnew on MUX
Has anyone adjusted Myrddin's +bbnext to work on MUX? The bboards in general work great (we're on MUX 2.12.0.2), but for some reason +bbnext keeps giving us trouble. Which is not dire so much as aggravating. Basically it doesn't seem to check properly if people have unread posts and just tells you there's nothing new to read even when there is. We tried adjusting, but the best we got was that it would give you your first unread post and then forget about any others.
$+bbnew:@switch setdiff(iter(setr(0,u(#35/VALID_GROUPS,%#,read)),get(##/MESS_LST)),setr(1,get(%#/BB_READ)))=,think pemit(%#,There are no more bulletin board posts to read.),@fo %#=+bbread [iter(revwords(%q0),switch(setr(2,setdiff(setr(3,get(##/MESS_LST)),%q1)),,,setq(4,##)))][setq(2,setdiff(setr(3,get(%q4/MESS_LST)),%q1))][setq(1,first(sort(iter(%q2,member(%q3,##)))))][name(%q4)]/%q1
Any idle help would be adored.

RE: RL Anger
At my company's old office, we had other smaller companies leasing space on our floor. I got to overhear one of the most technologically challenged of the tenants on the phone with AOL because his AOL email -- that he PAID FOR -- was not working.
Also taught him how to send emails with attachments and such. I tried to avoid being around when he had questions, but my department was right next to his company area.

TV shows in 2015 which depict any business with modern office spaces using dot matrix printers for anything but large scale data logging. What the fuck?
My office technology is laughably outdated, but even we don't have those.
(What shows are these?!)

RE: RL Anger
@Sunny FWIW, I think you should have the right to vent when you need, even when it's personal family stuff, and I think it's okay that you did it here for a bit.
I really wish you the best, and I hope things you don't get any uglier (and do, in fact, get LESS ugly). I've lost a family member very suddenly and unexpectedly, but I didn't have to deal with anything like what you're going through with your family.

RL Anger: My mother passed away on Tuesday. She was my step-mom, but she and my dad got married when I was six. She's my mother, too. My brothers -- her sons, not my father's -- have apparently decided I'm no longer family. My sister-in-law is threatening the rest of the family because she's not getting the physical things that she thinks she should. Everyone handles grief differently and I know this. I really do. But I cannot at all cope with being threatened and being told by my brother. My brother. That I'm not family and didn't love her and apparently thinking I have the same right as everyone else involved to be sad somehow makes me an awful person.
Jesus Christ, that's awful. I'm so sorry.

I have moved on to treating comics like shows, but even more so. If I am not engaged with a television show that I probably would like in its entirety, I wait and binge watch it.
Comics I binge almost exclusively. Because waiting a month for a ten minute read (at most) is a hell no. Heh.
I'll probably get around to binging Hickman's whole Avengers story now that's it wrapped/wrapping. I do like binging comics in between Wednesdays.

RE: Comics Stuff
But more onto comics, who is reading a bunch of Marvel now and can tell me what's even worth it. I had a whole bunch more Marvel on my pull a year or two years ago, but I've dropped them title by title for various reasons. (Gillen's run on Iron Man was terrible, Remender's run on Captain America caused unhealthy levels of fury, Hickman just could not have anything happen on his twenty Avengers titles, etc.) Now my Marvel pull is down a selection of solo titles (Black Widow, Hawkeye, Captain Marvel, Ms. Marvel, Daredevil, Storm). I just nabbed the #1 issues for A-Force, Runaways, and Spider-Gwen (plus the first of the second arc of Spider-Woman) to check those out, and liked all of them so will probably be grabbing future issues. But now EVERYTHING IS GETTING REBOOTED or whatever, and I was too jaded by Marvel events to keep up with Secret Wars. (No, Marvel, I don't want an event that is apparently involving all of these other past events of yours that I didn't like?) I don't even know what to try pulling!

RE: Comics Stuff
I think "let her try" is a pretty damn good philosophy. Because sure people love to say big things like "men are just built better at X than women," and maybe they are on average, but it also means there's a lot of instances where women are just not allowed to compete or qualify at the same level EVEN IF they're capable of it.

I don't actually think all of MU* RP is fanfiction, it's just a dumb sweeping generalization to make that fanficcers are all batshit insane. So I brilliantly countered with another sweeping generalization.
Two wrongs don't make a right. C'mon, we need you to be the adult here.
Ugh fuck you why do I get stuck with it! (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻
Fanfiction often gets thrown under the bus in fandom as kind of a "wrong" way to be a fan, which often means the "female" way to be a fan, so I'm biased in the other direction.
What? I mean, obviously, yeah it's totally the 'wrong' way to be a fan, but what's that got to do with women? Is this a stereotype I've managed to go decades without picking up on? My personal experience with fanficcers has been pretty well distributed between men and women.
I don't really write fanfic myself anymore -- I used to when I was a bright-eyed, eager youngster who needed to write all of her DBZ feels after Toonami -- but I've certainly some bullshit. I certainly know way more female fanficcers than male, but that's just personal experience vs. personal experience. There are definite threads throughout fandoms of criticizing certain WAYS of being a fan, and they all tend to be ways where women are more active than men. It's just fandom policing bullshit, AS PER USUAL.

Maybe the fanfiction community should stop being so utterly filled with some of the most ridiculously crazy fucking people ever? Fanficcers make MU* drama queens seem utterly tame by comparison.Really, though, I just think your definition is ridiculously wide. If you want to term, say, actors in a stage play with elements of improv as 'fanfic' too, you're welcome to but I think that's shit. Likewise, I don't really consider playing characters within a fictional environment expressly created for the purpose of playing a game to be fanfic, but I could see how if somebody only ever played Transformers, Mega Man, Kushiel, X-Men, blah blah blah insert other stuff based on otherwise self-contained stories, which frequently seem to involve running precreated characters from that setting alongside original creations, as 'kind of fanficcy'.
My 'twisted into fucked up expressions of fanfiction' line might have been unnecessary, but after all the strident essays on why such and such game's canon *is the only one that could ever possibly make sense and if you think Mega-Man isn't hot for Professer Xavier you can just die in a fire' or whatever the fuck, I'm probably biased.
I mean is anybody really going to deny that that crazy bitch who runs the Game of Thrones game isn't just running a giant fanfiction mill? Or that she and her gaggle of fawning supporters aren't just absolutely the worst?
The more salient point of my words is that our hobby is also pretty weird and considered ridiculous by plenty of people outside of it. And just like fanfiction, we've got batshit crazy people in MU* too.
I don't actually think all of MU* RP is fanfiction, it's just a dumb sweeping generalization to make that fanficcers are all batshit insane. So I brilliantly countered with another sweeping generalization.
Fanfiction often gets thrown under the bus in fandom as kind of a "wrong" way to be a fan, which often means the "female" way to be a fan, so I'm biased in the other direction. There are plenty of dumb people in all areas of all sorts of fandoms; I just limit my exposure to parts I like and ignore the rest. Kind of like ignoring the contingent of terrible players across MU*s.

Lol. At least we all messed up on that. Man, why did I think J?
I dunno. Apparently the G stands for Gwendolyn, and she's generally known as just 'G' according to Wikipedia. ;D
My company has a guy who is basically a contract employee who goes by his first initial and I kept being like, yeah but what do I address him as in emails, and they're like, T! I'm like, but what, and then I got over it. But it was a little odd the first couple times.

Basically the same sort of people who write fanfiction.
Man, we're on a forum for a hobby that is basically cooperative fanfiction.
If you have a weirdly expansive definition of fanfiction, I guess.
Or... I suppose if you just play at games based on existing entertainment properties that've been twisted into fucked up expressions of fanfiction, like most games based on books/movies/tv, it'd make sense to see it that way.
But like not every girl who is your friend is your girlfriend, not every expression of a fan playing with fiction is fanfiction.
Apparently only the ~inferior ones~.
It's dumb to act like writing fanfiction is some sort of shorthand for rabid, batshit fanaticism.
