I am actually a terrible person, or I suppose I can just be bought? My desire to mitigate my pain has proven to be stronger than my ethics; stupid WoW has become a fixation. I think I'm feeling the urge to play so strongly because 1- I'm in crisis (and this has long been a way for me to vent some of that pressure, and 2- I have told myself NO (and because it's off limits it becomes much more attractive).

      BLEH.

Well, I think you can play WoW without giving them money. Can't you just play like levels 1-20 for free whenever you want? Maybe that can give you your fix while not providing monetary support for the time being.

Eye of the World is a pretty standard fantasy plot in a lot of ways and the reason the elements you want feel thin is they're just not that present until the end.

I agree with this. A lot of the more interesting aspects of the series don't really start coming into play until Books 2, 3 and 4 depending on what characters you are looking at.

No, I'm fairly certain they aren't merging kingdoms, I watched a behind the scenes video and they were mapping out what cultures they were basing clothing off of for each kingdom/region and I didn't see anything missing.

As for politics -- well, I bet more White Tower shit will be seen in Season 2 when Egwene and Nynaeve go become initiates in the tower and meet up with Elayne. My impression when watching the show is that they are trying to balance world building and introducing characters/concepts without throwing too many things at non-book readers all at once.

I didn't expect sparks at Min & Rand's first meeting. Though I do wonder if that baby we saw Rand holding in her vision is her & Rand's. The baby had dark hair, Min has dark hair and unless Elayne isn't a blonde, I can't imagine Aviendha having dark hair either.

I think this was the last hurrah for Rand & Egwene. But yeah, the Perrin thing is kinda hinted at in the books that he likes her, but I don't expect a lot of this stuff to last past this season. Hell, even that argument didn't last all that long.

I can see how one can think that, but I don't know that Machin Shin is lying to them all exactly.

Going back and listening to what Machin Shin is telling each one, it feels like what is happening here is that it is reaching into their souls and bringing out their greatest fear and punching them square in the face with it.

Like to Moiraine: "You're wrong about everything, you'll murder these children and call it heroism."

That sounds like a reasonable fear for Moiraine to have tbh. And later on when we are hammered with the signs of Rand's channeling, Rand remembering Dragonmount and Rand's birth upon Dragonmount and being found by Tam, it feels like that scene of Machin Shin has reached into him and pulled out his singular greatest fear.

It's you, you've always known it's you deep down.
No matter how fast or far you run, you cannot escape your fate.
      You are the Dragon Reborn.
      You. Are. The Dragon. Reborn.

And to top off that scene... earlier when Rand is shooting arrows, his shots are all around the mark. When he finally decides to accept who and what he is, he easily slips into the Void and just starts slamming bullseye after bullseye with his shots.

The opener gave me fucking chills.

The flame & the void gave me chills.

      The ending gave me chills.

      What an episode.

Holy fucking shit. Shaiel, destroyer of Illianers. Holy shit. If that's what a Maiden can do when about to pop a baby out, I can't WAIT to see what Aiel who aren't affected by a pregnancy can do. Oh man. OH MAN. And then omfg. That sword coming down. You knew, you just KNEW.

      ***Difference in book & show***

      click to show

I have to say... Tam al'Thor putting down weapon, taking his helmet off and just offering her his hand so she can give birth with another human at her side is such a humanizing moment and a great change from the books where Tam just shows up after she's given birth and died. That's more bleak, this is still bleak but at least Tigraine has someone there at the very end. It also really does a lot for Tam's character and really highlights that of all the things that might have happened to the Dragon Reborn, he was given into the care of worthy people.

Phew, and that reveal. I loved it. Just loved it. It's a lot different than the books to be sure but the reverberating thumps of just bullseye after bullseye was really really cool. Being an avid soundtrack person, I knew exactly what was about to happen when the music started because that song is called Aman Syndai (Dragon Reborn).

I don't even know exactly what is going to happen to end this season next week but I'm certainly looking forward to it. And then the bleakness as we wait for Season 2. 😧

@arkandel Well, Moiraine is played by the most well known actor/actress on the show, so I get why they did it. Also the Wheel of Time starts off dominated by one character, but quickly becomes more of an ensemble affair where we get points of view from lots of different main characters. So to be honest, I would rather the show get people used to seeing things from the viewpoints of multiple characters than focusing on just one or two characters like The Eye of the World originally did.

All in all, I'm entertained, but having knowledge of the books is kind of trying at times, because I keep internally scoffing at some of the portrayals, such as the certainty I have that Lan and Moiraine would never have shared a bath. 🙂

      ***My response***

      click to show

The bath was just a bath though? Like the show keeps the true nature of their relationship true to the books. They aren't having sex, there's nothing sexual. They are a pair bonded because they have a mission. It was just two adults sharing a bath in a podunk town and using that time to talk about what they are there for.

The books were written in the early 1990s, and even then people were still prudish about shit, so I can see why Robert Jordan did what he did, can even appreciate that his own upbringing had an impact on his work, but if The Eye of the World came out in today's environment and that scene was included in the book, no one would really bat an eye.

I love Moiraine as a fictional character in the books, but I also really really appreciate the show deepening her character. She has someone she loves who fucking makes sense and isn't written in such a way that even another character in the books is like "What the fuck?" (paraphrasing). And we get to see her push aside her lover and desire to be with her out of a window because her life is and has been dedicated to finding the Dragon Reborn, and that same lover knowing and appreciating that because she has the same desire. It honestly adds more depth to these characters than when the books threw people together because everyone had to end up with someone and wouldn't you know they all had to be M-F pairings.

Same, though it does make me more side-eye about the heavy hand of Amazon on some other aspects of the show (the 'Who is the dragon reborn mystery box I don't think is an actual mystery' in particular). The showrunner seems thoughtful and smart about the adaptation choices he's making thus far, though, and I'm eager to see where it goes in its second season.

I suspect that all involved wanted some sort of "mystery" to be a hook for the first season. I'm not sure how show viewers will react when all is involved but my SUSPICIONS are that they are going to make the reveal interesting enough/epic enough to satisfy those folks.

All I want Amazon to do now is to open wallet, give the show more $ and 2 more episodes a season. With maybe a full-length movie for...

My issue with the Perrin thing is what a non-character his wife was. Fridging issues aside...this was a person with no lines and the show did not successfully make me feel emotionally invested in that relationship. I don't actually think Master Luhhan would've been better if the first episode still wasn't going to give that relationship any screentime. I also don't think it would've taken much. Mat's family situation felt a lot more fleshed-out than Perrin's marriage because of like 1 or 2 minutes of effort to show his parents sucking.

I think a 90-minute pilot with some more time in Emond's Field would've made me feel better about all the Two Rivers stuff, but apparently that's not what Amazon wanted and the show has subsequently been a lot better in terms of characterization.

Yeah the show runner wanted a 2 hour long premier and Amazon was like 'lol no'. So I'm not as critical as I might have been because I think they are trying to do their best to bring all of this to life in a way that can appeal to book fans and bring new people in.

In an AMA, Brandon Sanderson was asked about the 'Perrin's wife' thing. He said he objected to it, felt it was completely unnecessary, and suggested that Master Luhhan could fulfil the role of shocking Perrin in the same way, without being problematic. And he was ignored.

To be fair, Sanderson has also said that he's made suggestions or given feedback that were listened to. I have heard Rafe talk about how much he loves the books, and I don't doubt him on this. He's an interesting guy because he's actually been in another fandom before, as a fan and participant with Survivor (he is in Season 10 I believe).

Anyway, I think Sanderson has made a good point elsewhere, that television and movies are a different animal than novels. I agree with this, and having seen adaptation after adaptation shit on source material I've enjoyed in the past...

I can say that this is an adaptation I really enjoy and appreciate. There's a lot of the core material there, and we're getting some new material. I don't think the core stories will be changing, but I think we'll see things from a different perspective than that of the books both because you can only do so much with 8 hours a season and because budgets are a thing lol.

Plus I've heard some positive things from non-readers, so if they are bringing in new fans who are encouraged to read the books later on by fans who aren't going to shit on anything and everything, I'm all for that.

      ***Book Spoiler Talk***

Firstly, having the Dragon be a woman makes me feel like it lessens Egwene & Nynaeve. Egwene and Nynaeve do a lot in the series without being The Dragon Reborn. Let them stand on their own, let them be them. Egwene as Amyrlin is a bright lamp that sets up the Aes Sedai for a better future after the Last Battle. She single handedly reunites the broken tower and makes it whole in order to bring the Aes Sedai to Tarmon Gai'din. These are massive accomplishments, and makes her impressive in her own right not just being "The Dragon Reborn". She also stands up to balefire disintegrating the pattern and gives up her life to heal the damage to the pattern and to kill the Forsaken who was doing it and becomes a crystallized monument forever more. Honestly, her one mistake was Gawyn, but that's because I hate Gawyn, lol.

Nynaeve is the greatest living healer in the world. She healed stilling, something the goddamn Aes Sedai in the Age of Legends couldn't do. She is 50% of the power used in healing the male half of the source, something that most people when hearing about it.... either disbelieve or believe the Creator did it. She also heals men who have gone mad, which is an incredible feat. It's very likely that she is not just the greatest healer of the current age, but if she lived during the Age of Legends, she would have been one of the greatest Aes Sedai of that time. Plus her story with Lan is incredible, and I feel swells of emotion when she ports his ass to the Borderlands and makes him ride the entire width of the continent while she goes out and puts the clarion call that the "Golden Crane flys for Tarmon Gai'don." I think her being the Dragon Reborn would diminish a lot about her character.

      Now, for the men.

Perrin. Whew, man. Yeah, Perrin needs some help, especially between Lord of Chaos and Knife of Dreams, but that doesn't actually take away that Perrin has a chance in a series that can tell a tighter story to be a badass. While not a major part of the prophecies, there's a line about the Wolf King carrying the Hammer. And the way they have set Perrin up so far, it's clear that he has the internal struggle between the axe and hammer in a fiercer way than he did in the books. This is great, I want to see him struggle with who he is, and then embrace it. Let him slowly grow into the Wolf King and let him use the good doggos to fuck up all the bad guys out there, because doggos are good boyes and girls and I love them. Still, he has a story that I think can be told very well and let it develop without all the bullshit of being the Dragon Reborn.

Mat. Mat's the greatest general of this age and while it takes time for him to fully embrace his role. Admittedly I'm not a big fan of who he ends up marrying, but I highly enjoyed watching their top general watching Mat work and be like "Who the fuck is this guy?" lol. Which it seems like a lot of people have that reaction to Mat, which is hilarious and fun. And that's his character. Constantly trying to duck responsibility but always being dragged into it by people around him or the pattern. He has a great character arc in the books (especially from Book 3/4 onward), and I think there's enough there to let him shine as a character without making him the Dragon Reborn.

Then Rand. What is Rand's role/story without being Lews Therin reborn? I mean, they could combine him with Mat/Perrin's stories, but again I want those characters to stand on their own. I want people who have never read the books to love Mat and Perrin like I did when I read the books. I want all of the Eamon's Fielders to stand on their own stories like they did in the books on their own merits without changing who the Dragon Reborn is.

Besides -- The show has already made it abundantly clear that Rand is the Dragon Reborn. So I'm not worried about it, but I thought I would still share my mindspace about WoT plot.

      ***=NSFW content***

There's two camps that I'm seeing and divided upon.

      1. Liandrin is a combination of the aforementioned character & Galina Casban. Both red ajah, both black ajah, but Galina isn't the most important character and she is in later books whereas Liandrin really is not really all that active later on. This could allow for them to keep the same actress and give us her villainy for longer.

      2. Liandrin is a combination of Liandrin & Alviarin. This opens the door to Elaida coming in from Caemlyn later on and thinking the tower is a shit show and we already know Liandrin has been plotting. This changes Alviarin's normal ajah from White to Red, but also they are both black ajah and would keep Liandrin around as a villain for a lot longer as well.

A core plot point is Elaida is not black ajah. She has a lot of other issues, but she's not a darkfriend. One of the other two probably makes more sense because you can combine some darkfriends together and still allow Elaida to come and do her thing.
