Finally getting to the point in your game development that you're, after so many months of writing and stress and frustration. Finally, I (mostly)ready for a soft alpha for my game. At least for people that have stuck it out on the Discord server while people toiled away in theme writing.

Granted, it's not completely finished. But it's finished enough. For the moment until I fill everything else out.

      MU Things I Love/Like --

That people are still working on new games.

Maybe I will like it, maybe I won't but either way it's good that people are still hammering away at new games for people to play.

@buttercup Okay first of all, using 'lynch mob' to describe any part of this is utterly offensive and absurd.

Second. There was no stalking. There was no harassment. What happened was people calling out authoritarian behavior by the admin. The behavior of those in charge is what is alarming, not the people calling it out. Or let me guess, do you think the BLM protests were "violent riots" GTFO of here..

I'm going to be as short as possible in my response that I will probably be forced to regret.

I feel that it has been made abundantly clear on this forum, unless one is left leaning in nature, they should keep their mouths shut. Regardless of topic. If you try to speak otherwise, the dogpile will come. That if you are a moderate, or right leaning, you're simply not welcome here.

That. Is exactly how this place has made me feel.

I'll use this as a place to openly admit that I'm a filthy fucking centrist.

Since I've been too lazy to get around to doing this. Which honestly describes half of my MUing 'career' or what have you. Anyway, I'm really just putting down places and characters I spent any real time on since I have hopped on some places, spent like a week or two and then flaked out. I also want a Wheel of Time MU*, and the threads posted about one last year really was a damn tease.

      Current

      Past characters

      Arx - Vittorio
      5th World - Solon, Antaeus
8th Sea - Gerrit (regretably idled out due to RL, did enjoy this place a bit)
      Eternal Crusade/CE - Gabriel, Tristan
Fallcoast - Tucker, plus a couple alts I barely did anything on.
Heroes Assembled - Warren Worthington, Victor von Doom, Kyle Rayner
      Heroes & Villains - Constantine
Reno (3rd one or whatever) - Rourke, Holden
Tales of the Round - Maelgwyn
      Valorous Dominion - Cosimo, Albrecht

@Arkandel @Auspice @Ganymede Flagging the mods, but can we rip out @magee101's posts and the ones responding to them into a hogpit thread? You can throw this one in too. That way this thread can stay focused on Cobalt's project and any updates to it.

    • Wheel of Time

Let's have a chat about the Wheel of Time.

It's one of my favorite fantasy series out there, and I kind of want to see a MU of it at some point, especially with the Amazon series in the works. I know there were a couple of threads last year, but they haven't been posted in in quite some time and well, I'm kind of starting at a blank slate here.

I have some key ideas of what I would want to do:

      1. Center the base grid in Tar Valon. Let's be honest, it's the center of the world, and since you'll have people wanting to play Aes Sedai and Warders, it makes perfect sense to center a game here and then have rooms dedicated for adventures here and there.

      2. I want to use Ares and FS3 because I'm not a huge fan of any of the RPG systems that were made for the IP, so I'll need to think up some ways of figuring things out. I miss quirks from the older system, but maybe that can be added in some how? Worth looking into. Anyway, I view Saidin and Saidar as attributes with Earth, Fire, Air, Water and Spirit as skills. Maybe that's too simplistic? I don't know, but it feels like simplicity would be better, less for folks to learn?

      3. Time-frame wise, would probably be best to center it towards the books, but take out feature characters. Give PCs a time to shine as this is 'their time around the wheel', so to speak. Also the kingdoms of 'Randland' have far more details written about them with culture and stuff, so it'd be easier for people new to things to get a sense for how people from Illian or Arad Doman are compared to realms during Hawkwing's time, for example.

Anyway, that's where I'm starting from. Sorry if some of this sounds like a bit of rambling, but I was doing some thinking as I was typing! Now to open up things for advice and other discussion and all that.

@theznar said in MUs That We Would Love To Make (But Won't):

Totally basic I think...but a Star Wars game set during the early days of the Rebellion. No force users, no FCs, and set in a corner of the Empire to start with no regard for future canon. Most fun I ever had MU*ing was probably at SW: Uprising in the early 2000s. Let's go steal some X-Wing prototypes.

That or a game focused on a place like Nar Shaddaa where people gotta work through the criminal underworld. Or something.

    • RE: Developing a WoD Codebase for Ares

So the problem with WoD and Ares is not Ruby, it's that if you want to properly put WoD into Ares, you're going to have to recode many of the plugins that come along with Ares. On the surface this may not seem like a big deal, but Faraday is really good about adding new features to Ares and keeping it up to date with bug fixes and the like.

So that means every time there's an Ares update, you're going to have to go in and make some changes line by line to keep everything working with a lot of the custom code.

Don't get me wrong, I think Ares is great, but I don't know that Ares is the best solution for a large scale RPG system like WoD/CofD just because there's going to be a lot of work after the initial coding is done to keep things maintained.

Playing games is serious business @Auspice, jesus. 😛

But for serious, this sounds like the most reasonable "please leave" situations I've seen in a while. If the game was in alpha, a time to test systems and provide feedback, why are you trying to "solve the game"? That seems a bit try hard.

Is this where we've gotten to in this hobby? On the Internet? Where one person says "I hate this thing!" and everyone who doesn't hate that thing has to defend it to the death?

Yes. But things have been here for quite some time, at least online. You're not alone in noticing a circle jerk of defensive behavior in this whole situation.

Honestly, I'd like to petition @Arkandel to take away the upvote button. I just don't think it serves a good purpose anymore.

No, I'm fairly certain they aren't merging kingdoms, I watched a behind the scenes video and they were mapping out what cultures they were basing clothing off of for each kingdom/region and I didn't see anything missing.

As for politics -- well, I bet more White Tower shit will be seen in Season 2 when Egwene and Nynaeve go become initiates in the tower and meet up with Elayne. My impression when watching the show is that they are trying to balance world building and introducing characters/concepts without throwing too many things at non-book readers all at once.

    • RE: Feedback Needed - SWSE System & Character Concepts

@Warlander said in Feedback Needed - SWSE System & Character Concepts:

Honestly, the best advice I can give anyone looking to use SWSE for ANY setting can be summarized in one word:

      Don't.

Only DSS is worse as a Star Wars system, IMO, and I've played all three major Star Wars RPG systems enough, on MUSHes and off of them, to say it with some authority. All SWD20 systems, SE included, play like a D20 dungeon crawler with Star Wars stickers slapped over the Dungeons and Dragons labels, to the point that someone I know IRL referred to SWD20 as Dungeons and Death Stars. Balance is known to trigger hysterical laughter, characters are generally cookie-cutter similar, and a gap of a few levels between opponents is known to be insurmountable in most cases. Twinks love this system, because there is so much to abuse; far too much to list, most of which comes from character 'builds'. Which is also the reason why it's not popular with non-twinks who have experienced this.

That said, if you absolutely have no choice in which system you must use, a few tips may make the game at least bearable for players who come to play a game and have fun, and not to 'win'.

First, don't take the names of basic classes too seriously. Some games use these names as a reason to restrict access to them. This is a trap that is easy to fall into. The fact is, there is not a great deal to choose from in terms of classes, and restricting access only makes the cookie cutters that much more obvious.

Second, unless you have a very good reason for doing so (and very few exist), don't restrict access to the Force in chargen, for the obvious reasons. Many players consider Force Slots and other restrictive practices an instant turn-off.

Third, be extremely careful about allowing Dark Siders as PCs. Twinks love Dark Side characters, because they allow all the Force-y goodness without any of the moral obligations inherent to Jedi and other Light Side Force traditions. Especially Sith. Since SWSE is a twink magnet to begin with, if you choose to allow Dark Siders outside of a campaign that is nothing but Dark Siders, expect problems. Trust me, you won't be kept waiting long.

Fourth, consider alternate ways to earn XP, and alternate ways to advance. SWSE advancement is glacial in most cases, and no changes can be made to characters until the next level turns over on the XP-odometer. This is a source of considerable frustration to even the best-dispositioned players.

More as I think of them. This should be a good list to start with.

100% this. D20 Star Wars in any form sucks. Star Wars isn't a game of classes and levels. FFG tried to do good things with the license and for the most part did, but D6 is probably the best for MUs.

I love that Jennkryst got banned for speaking factual things.

This place has become the model for a GOP-run America. No dissension. If you do have an alternative point of view of what Mother or Father think, you should keep it in private, because if other people were to dare to see it, they might become corrupted.

I don't even know what to say anymore. Ya'll took what was a Good Thing (moving the forum into another site and making it work), then poured gasoline all over yourselves and self-immolated.

Whatever, maybe all the bans can be reversed once we earn enough XP on that one game to buy our MSB posting privs back, or maybe there are some people here who aren't just burning bridges, they are nuking them from orbit.
