@magee101 Our 'alpha' is more about allowing people to log in and look around (right now, we're locked down to staff logins only). CharGen is still being coded, and our Wiki is still being built, but we'd like the opportunity to see who's interested in our idea, set up a dialog, kick around some story ideas with our first 'wave' of players. At some point during Alpha, we'll open up Chargen, because I'm very sure that people will find bugs in my code, and I'd rather find them sooner than later. ๐Ÿ™‚

Beta is where we start talking about character approval. Some of our House Rules may still be in flux during this point as well, but will be firm by the time we open.

Sounds awesome. Looking forward to hopping on and checking it out.

All in all, I'm entertained, but having knowledge of the books is kind of trying at times, because I keep internally scoffing at some of the portrayals, such as the certainty I have that Lan and Moiraine would never have shared a bath. ๐Ÿ™‚

      ***My response***

The bath was just a bath though? Like the show keeps the true nature of their relationship true to the books. They aren't having sex, there's nothing sexual. They are a pair bonded because they have a mission. It was just two adults sharing a bath in a podunk town and using that time to talk about what they are there for.

The books were written in the early 1990s, and even then people were still prudish about shit, so I can see why Robert Jordan did what he did, can even appreciate that his own upbringing had an impact on his work, but if The Eye of the World came out in today's environment and that scene was included in the book, no one would really bat an eye.

I love Moiraine as a fictional character in the books, but I also really really appreciate the show deepening her character. She has someone she loves who fucking makes sense and isn't written in such a way that even another character in the books is like "What the fuck?" (paraphrasing). And we get to see her push aside her lover and desire to be with her out of a window because her life is and has been dedicated to finding the Dragon Reborn, and that same lover knowing and appreciating that because she has the same desire. It honestly adds more depth to these characters than when the books threw people together because everyone had to end up with someone and wouldn't you know they all had to be M-F pairings.

@sunny I half disagree. Sure WoD games are not entirely about gear, but gear (material things and wantinf those things) is a core facet in a lot of concepts, storylines, and drama. Saying WoD is not about gear is like saying DnD is not about roleplay.

There are plenty of options in the corebook which don't bring into account some of the dumb stuff Armory and Armory: Reloaded brought into the game. And let's be honest, if people got Staff to cave on adding a few equipment items from those books, then they'd start wanting more. And more.

      Oh. My. Fucking. God.

The opener gave me fucking chills.

The flame & the void gave me chills.

      The ending gave me chills.

      What an episode.

Holy fucking shit. Shaiel, destroyer of Illianers. Holy shit. If that's what a Maiden can do when about to pop a baby out, I can't WAIT to see what Aiel who aren't affected by a pregnancy can do. Oh man. OH MAN. And then omfg. That sword coming down. You knew, you just KNEW.

I have to say... Tam al'Thor putting down weapon, taking his helmet off and just offering her his hand so she can give birth with another human at her side is such a humanizing moment and a great change from the books where Tam just shows up after she's given birth and died. That's more bleak, this is still bleak but at least Tigraine has someone there at the very end. It also really does a lot for Tam's character and really highlights that of all the things that might have happened to the Dragon Reborn, he was given into the care of worthy people.

Phew, and that reveal. I loved it. Just loved it. It's a lot different than the books to be sure but the reverberating thumps of just bullseye after bullseye was really really cool. Being an avid soundtrack person, I knew exactly what was about to happen when the music started because that song is called Aman Syndai (Dragon Reborn).

I don't even know exactly what is going to happen to end this season next week but I'm certainly looking forward to it. And then the bleakness as we wait for Season 2. ๐Ÿ˜ง

Darc began coding for us before he made his own game. One day, Darc was gone and suddenly had San Francisco up which had references about The Reachโ€™s news files. When I asked him how he got all of this stuff, he said that he was building a CG for Miami and was just testing it there. At that time I had not seen the other references to The Reach and have since been approached about Darc taking our flatfile with the shell access he had.

He wonโ€™t be on Miami staffing.

Holy shit. This is a total scumbag move and a huge violation of trust. What the fuck.

I can see how one can think that, but I don't know that Machin Shin is lying to them all exactly.

Going back and listening to what Machin Shin is telling each one, it feels like what is happening here is that it is reaching into their souls and bringing out their greatest fear and punching them square in the face with it.

Like to Moiraine: "You're wrong about everything, you'll murder these children and call it heroism."

That sounds like a reasonable fear for Moiraine to have tbh. And later on when we are hammered with the signs of Rand's channeling, Rand remembering Dragonmount and Rand's birth upon Dragonmount and being found by Tam, it feels like that scene of Machin Shin has reached into him and pulled out his singular greatest fear.

It's you, you've always known it's you deep down.
No matter how fast or far you run, you cannot escape your fate.
      You are the Dragon Reborn.
      You. Are. The Dragon. Reborn.

And to top off that scene... earlier when Rand is shooting arrows, his shots are all around the mark. When he finally decides to accept who and what he is, he easily slips into the Void and just starts slamming bullseye after bullseye with his shots.

I had had a similar idea but just haven't had time to loop back to it yet (https://musoapbox.net/topic/1771/wheel-of-time-mu-sh-x?page=1). There's lots of good discussion in there if you haven't read it yet.

system wise I am curious to see what Spirit Lake does with their magic system in FS3 as at cursory look it seems like it could be adapted to channeling pretty well.

Setting wise you need to ask yourself what the setting is defined as for you. Book 1 is a different setting than book 3 which is differrnt than book 10. Ariel, SeanchN, Asha'man, dreadlords, power level of channelers, all these are affected by timeline choice.

Yeah, I skimmed that thread and was taking some notes of some of the discussion already.

Spirit Lake does have some interesting stuff going on with it's magic system, but I guess I'm kind of stuck on -- is having a more simplified system better where someone can roll Saidar + Fire to make a primarily fire-based weave, or would actually writing out specific weaves be better. I think the first one can be better for people not so familiar with the setting, while the second adds a bit more for character options?

Eye of the World is a pretty standard fantasy plot in a lot of ways and the reason the elements you want feel thin is they're just not that present until the end.

I agree with this. A lot of the more interesting aspects of the series don't really start coming into play until Books 2, 3 and 4 depending on what characters you are looking at.

@taika said in Crimson Dynasties -- A Vampire: The Requiem 2e MUSH set in modern Beijing:

I poked my head in for a little bit. The wiki was extremely barebones, especially for someone not familiar with Ares. I think nixing all the covenants and writing in three big ones without giving them abilities to compensate for the loss one gets from being, say, Circle of the Crone, or whatever was a huge detriment. A lot of what I saw came across as a major lack of understanding for the system and the theme of the core game itself, and how those pieces interacted.

Well, Ares wiki itself has all the information one needs for using core Ares commands.

The issue is going to be that anything custom is going to need easily accessible documentation so that even people familiar with Ares can find it and learn.

That said, I do agree that ripping out the 5 covenants and not giving detail/replacement goodies for the 3 new ones was something that kind of made me go "hrm.." since covenants are such a big part of the core game and what secrets each covenant has with regards to their own abilities.

If it is, I've been paying attention to that story all day. It's been fascinating.

    • RE: CofD on Ares (A Question)

@faraday said in CofD on Ares (A Question):

I don't know that anyone likes it, it's just all they have to work with.

Various coders have looked at implementing CofD on Ares, but usually they want to make the full-fledged immersive type of WoD code that people are used to. That doesn't work well with Ares' flexible scene system, and would require so many custom code mods to core systems that it wouldn't be easy to share.

Nobody seems to just want to make a simple chargen + die roller for CofD. No MUSH chargen is easy, but it would be fairly straightforward - like the Fate/FFG/Cortex ones I put together. But even if they did, there are some other considerations around whether CofD/WoD really fits well in Ares' design philosophy.

Yeah, I totally get all of this. I was just curious how people found playing with it more than anything else. I guess when I look at it it feels a little table-top-ish which is kind of cool, but also makes me wonder how much staff work there is to keep an eye on sheets and such.
