for instance Logain knew how strong Nynaeve was when she channeled (in the books a man can know if a woman channels but that's it) yet he was captured in the first place by Aes Sedai who infiltrated his camp and Shielded him before he was able to defend himself.

This is super unlikely to be the actual explanation, but my headcanon went instantly to the books, where Logain in fact has a Talent to see ta'veren. The first time he sees Rand in Caemlyn? He's "shining like the sun."

Personally, I always figured Egwene and Nynaeve were also ta'veren, though I don't think this was ever explicitly stated in the series? So that part made a lot of sense to me.

No, in the books the only three ta'veren where Rand, Mat and Perrin. However it does make sense to kind of broaden things to Egwene. As for Nynaeve, I don't think Logain saw ta'veren, my head is telling me that the simplest explanation is that after Moiraine's conversation that Nynaeve's explosive first channeling was far stronger and far more powerful than any of the Aes Sedai he had faced that everything resonated with him.

I mean, she basically upcast a Cure Mass Wounds upcast to the highest possible level. Shit had OOMPH.

Love that Amazon drops episodes at midnight GMT so that we get to see them on Thursday evenings lol. Anyway, really enjoyed Episode 5, I think they did a good job building up a few characters and introducing another. Next episode is 6 and that was being highly spoken of by critics so I'm really looking forward to it.

For example I don't think we'll see an Elaida at this point since Liandrin has been established so much. Some of the Whitecloaks at least will get the treatment for sure.

Okay, so. I've had conversations and seen theories and I'll respond in spoilers because these are book spoilers, so anyone who doesn't know the material but is into the show should not click!

There's two camps that I'm seeing and divided upon.

      1. Liandrin is a combination of the aforementioned character & Galina Casban. Both red ajah, both black ajah, but Galina isn't the most important character and she is in later books whereas Liandrin really is not really all that active later on. This could allow for them to keep the same actress and give us her villainy for longer.

      2. Liandrin is a combination of Liandrin & Alviarin. This opens the door to Elaida coming in from Caemlyn later on and thinking the tower is a shit show and we already know Liandrin has been plotting. This changes Alviarin's normal ajah from White to Red, but also they are both black ajah and would keep Liandrin around as a villain for a lot longer as well.

A core plot point is Elaida is not black ajah. She has a lot of other issues, but she's not a darkfriend. One of the other two probably makes more sense because you can combine some darkfriends together and still allow Elaida to come and do her thing.

      yeah, that shit was dope.

Moiraine putting Nynaeve on blast? Awesome.
Moiraine putting Liandrin on blast? Hilarious.
Moiraine telling Siuan to kneel? OMFG MOIRAINE.

Loved the episode, a few things I'm a little hand wobbly on, namely the reason to go to the Eye of the World, but I'm just gonna assume

In an AMA, Brandon Sanderson was asked about the 'Perrin's wife' thing. He said he objected to it, felt it was completely unnecessary, and suggested that Master Luhhan could fulfil the role of shocking Perrin in the same way, without being problematic. And he was ignored.

To be fair, Sanderson has also said that he's made suggestions or given feedback that were listened to. I have heard Rafe talk about how much he loves the books, and I don't doubt him on this. He's an interesting guy because he's actually been in another fandom before, as a fan and participant with Survivor (he is in Season 10 I believe).

Anyway, I think Sanderson has made a good point elsewhere, that television and movies are a different animal than novels. I agree with this, and having seen adaptation after adaptation shit on source material I've enjoyed in the past...

I can say that this is an adaptation I really enjoy and appreciate. There's a lot of the core material there, and we're getting some new material. I don't think the core stories will be changing, but I think we'll see things from a different perspective than that of the books both because you can only do so much with 8 hours a season and because budgets are a thing lol.

Plus I've heard some positive things from non-readers, so if they are bringing in new fans who are encouraged to read the books later on by fans who aren't going to shit on anything and everything, I'm all for that.

Same, though it does make me more side-eye about the heavy hand of Amazon on some other aspects of the show (the 'Who is the dragon reborn mystery box I don't think is an actual mystery' in particular). The showrunner seems thoughtful and smart about the adaptation choices he's making thus far, though, and I'm eager to see where it goes in its second season.

I suspect that all involved wanted some sort of "mystery" to be a hook for the first season. I'm not sure how show viewers will react when all is involved but my SUSPICIONS are that they are going to make the reveal interesting enough/epic enough to satisfy those folks.

All I want Amazon to do now is to open wallet, give the show more $ and 2 more episodes a season. With maybe a full-length movie for...

@gryphter If I wanted to play a Wheel of Time game (and I do), I wouldn't want to play after the books, because that's not the Wheel of Time setting that I know and love -- it's radically different from the Wheel of Time. Heck, it doesn't even have the Light and Shadow war that drives... well... the entire series. There's a reason that the series ends at that point, everything after it is a very differnt story.

I second this. The options for conflict become more limited, though I will grant you that if you wanted a game based more on domain building and politics, it could work.

I didn't expect sparks at Min & Rand's first meeting. Though I do wonder if that baby we saw Rand holding in her vision is her & Rand's. The baby had dark hair, Min has dark hair and unless Elayne isn't a blonde, I can't imagine Aviendha having dark hair either.

I think this was the last hurrah for Rand & Egwene. But yeah, the Perrin thing is kinda hinted at in the books that he likes her, but I don't expect a lot of this stuff to last past this season. Hell, even that argument didn't last all that long.

Well, I am kind of sitting here having to process exactly how I feel about this finale.

Like on one hand, I really get some of these changes and have to look at the fact that Mat's actor not showing up for filming for Ep 7 and Ep 8 likely caused a great deal of problems storywise and rewrites had to happen.

On the other hand though, I'm not exactly sure why some of the decisions were made?

      Anyway two lists --

      ***Stuff I like/Stuff I get***

      click to show

      • Ishamael. So dude clearly set a trap at the Eye of the World, I think many people called this, and it's very fitting to the character. The actor playing him did pretty good I think, at least I liked the overall vibe I was getting from him.
      • The Horn of Valere being in Fal Dara. I mean, yeah not having it at the Eye makes sense to me. The overall plot of it being 'found' and then 'stolen' are here, and now we have a new reason to go after Fain for the dagger (Loial being stabbed, and I assume this was a stand-in because of a lack of Mat).
      • Ishamael shielding Moiraine (or possibly stilling, but it wasn't as dramatic as Logain being gentled, so assuming that it's a tied off shield). Great way to fuck with an Aes Sedai and show how strong the Forsaken are vs. today's channelers. Also Moiraine's channeling abilities aren't as big of a deal plot-wise after Eye of the World... and gives Rand something to strive for to help her undo that shield.
      • Rand running off. I mean, dick move, but if he's off to Tear, then my assumptions that Books 2 and 3 are largely going to be merged in Season 2 makes sense.
      • I get killing off Agelmar. Not a very important character in the grand scheme and who knows what the actor's availability will be for the Last Battle, lol.
      • Min peacing the fuck out of Fal Dara, lol. That was hilarious.
      • Fain & the Fades showing up and taking over. Good times.
      • The Aes Sedai uniforms at the start. Lews Therin's looked dope. I also liked how Ishamael was dressed too. Very dapper evil gentleman.

      ***Stuff that boggles me***

      click to show

      • Ok, I get making the ladies burn out when faced with the amount of power that Egwene and Nynaeve can bring to bear, but why is it necessary to have Nynaeve burn out and then Egwene... heal her? Was Nynaeve dead? If so, that's some bullshit because Rand couldn't even bring someone back to life with fucking Callendor in his hands and not only is Rand more powerful, but Callendor is one of the most powerful sa'angreal in existence. If she isn't dead, did Egwene heal someone burned out from the source? I don't like that either. Healing shit is Nynaeve's realm, it's where she shines, giving something like that to Egwene kinda feels like it's taking away from Nynaeve.
      • The Rand dream. Man, that was Egwene's test to become Accepted in the White Tower and we turn it into a way for Ishamael to tease Rand? I feel like there's different stuff that could have been done. Fuck, having a sequence of flashes where Ishamael shows Rand human suffering through the ages while taunting "I win again, Lews Therin" could have been great.
      • Fucking why not have Ishamael and Lews Therin talking in the beginning? Give some context as to who Ishamael IS. He's the most interesting of the Forsaken, goddamn it.
      • Why the hell did that Aes Sedai call Lews Therin 'the dragon reborn'? He's not, he's The Dragon. Yes, the concept of the champion of the light is probably across many ages but Lews Therin is the man that was called 'Dragon'. Maybe a minor nitpick, but it took away from a scene that I thought was kind of cool, I just wish was different. A discussion of philosophy between Ishamael and Lews Therin could have really been great.

    • RE: New Project?

@sunnyj I get what you're saying, but that's not a problem that's gonna go away any time soon since Onyx Path wants to publish like 1 book every 2 years. I don't know if it's just the way the RPG space is heading or what. DnD 5E has been out for a while and only has a few core books. By this time in 4E, there were at least double the books. Even more back in 3.5E.

The thing for me is, 2E seems to streamline and make a lot of improvements over 1E, even with what's out there. Are there a bunch of dumb as fuck fighting styles or other crazy shit? No. But there's certainly a breadth of options, especially if you do plug in the Covenants book + stuff like Half-Damned and Hurt Locker.
