This is a very interesting conversation in which I do not have much to add. All of my IC romances have involved quite a bit of open OOC communication About Stuff and I have yet to really get burned by that in any significant way?? That's pretty much what I got.
I'm on a sandboxy style Ares setup right now and we aren't quite forum slow but I have found that the existence of the portal does make engagement easier despite the lack of much formal scheduling. So yeah, kinda!
One warning I'd have really is that if you're going to sandbox is that if you want to make sure everyone is on the same page about what that means. Like, are you telling a story together with an overarching plot, are you interacting in a shared universe, are you just using the shared space to do whatever -- all of these are fine, but it's good for everyone to be on the same page about it because otherwise you can end up with weird drama and there's no staff to intervene because... it's a sandbox between friendos.
@Rinel A small sandbox that's just for you and your friends can be great fun. Ares can be a great game-in-a-box for this.
I have been treating these symptoms for a solid week. The upshot: my sinuses are almost completely better. My cough is worse. And I have been sleeping constantly.
This is not convenient for billing hours. Or doing rp. Or living in an apartment that does not look like some kind of Kleenex explosion zone.

@Joyeuse We can help you find a roster that has never before been played if that is a worry you have. There are a great many who are fresh or who have only been played for a hot second.
I used to hesitate before posing in a gmed scene due to anxiety about spotlighting but now I am old and I just pose. I've discovered that if I pose "actively" and am doing something people are more likely to also be doing something and the beginning of scenes kicks things off right away instead of standing around.
I think it is just one of those things. Somebody's gotta break the seal.
I think anyone can play anyone, provided they treat the concept with respect and remember that people are people, and not just "elves are a small, lithe people who excel at poverty."
Our office walls are painted! The carpet has been shampoo'd! There's a lovely wall mural covering the inexplicable window into a garage we don't have access to! Our conference table and chairs are being delivered today and my office share officemate is bringing me a calzone!
I feel like a real grownup.

I've never had an issue having my playlist up and am always upfront about who I am on games. If people don't like me, they can avoid me, and it will be better for us both, tbh!

@Rinel I will say that as in my particular area of the law, there's not that much intensive research that needs to happen. Fully half of my time is spent being an unqualified therapist for people in crisis. A quarter of my time is spent working cases towards compromise points based on terrible facts -- the law barely registers on these except in so far as it helps that both I and the attorneys I'm arguing with have ostensibly read the goddamn statute.
I'd also say 90% of motions I write are doctored versions of previous motions I already wrote, so it's not like... there's a lot of NEW research I have to do. If I were working appeals and personal restraint petitions and digging down in the trenches of whatever the fuck the 9th circuit did most recently, as a solo like I am now, I would probably die.
@Derp Mm. I know some other solos in the general vicinity, but I'm super judgey of other people's practice (like an asshole) and I don't really want to yoke myself to someone who I don't SUPER trust. I'll hang socially with a lot of lawyers but the idea of actually connecting myself to someone else in a way where my professional reputation is tied to theirs is a huge commitment and I'm like eeeeehhhhhhhhh. Plus, I hold a couple of contracts as 'law office of Sao's real name' so I don't need a partner for like... rainmaking or whatever.
I'm working on getting into an office share with some folks so that I won't just be Shroedinger's lawyer in my own house / car / random coffee shops all the time (which is the current setup -- always at work and not at work simultaneously). We'll see how it goes. Mumblemumblemumble.
If I get to a point where income is sustainable I guess I'll try and figure out how the eff employment taxes and stuff work so I can hire someone. I mean I GUESS. I am not enthusiastic about trying to be someone's boss. It sounds awful.
I'm a solo attorney practicing alone without admin support. I desperately miss having an assistant of any kind. I always wrote my own briefs but I live in constant paranoia that I'm going to miss a hearing or something due to some dingbat calendaring mistake.
After nine years, I no longer feel like a "fake" attorney putting on suits like playing dressup. I do not know when this transition occurred. Yet I do feel as though impostor syndrome was merely replaced by other anxieties.
I have had several very good, very emotionally intense scenes over the course of this past week, and also at least one that was amazing comedy. It's just been a great RP week and I am really feeling why this hobby is fun. #blessed??
I know she wasn't young but just... fucking damn. IDK.
