All you have to do to get out of jury duty is to say that you just don't think you can be impartial in a case like this because it emotionally affects you so much.

RE: RL Anger
@Ganymede Happily, everything that my parents had done was done while talking to our insurance agent on the phone and apparently they are getting assurances that this is substantially likely to be covered unless the investigator decides this was groundwater (common enemy doctrine I haven't studied you since law school!). This isn't anger so much as relief.
I'm not sure why the insurance agents were talking to my parents without me but since I was in trial I do not care.

RE: RL Anger
@Ganymede It looks like most of my personal property is safe, but thanks for the advice -- I'm not entirely sure that my parents have not already started doing things to the property (I'm still in trial this morning) but I'll see what I can do to stop the bus.

RE: RL Anger
@Ganymede I have Allstate??
Update on damage: Apparently they have to cut out the dry wall, dry everything, re sheet rock, paint, and then pull up carpet pad that is glued to the concrete foundation.
I do not know what Allstate is going to feel about this claim, but I may cry anyway. Meanwhile, I think I am going to have to cancel or severely modify my friends' visit next week and I was really looking forward to seeing them again, it's been more than a year.

RE: RL Anger
4 day jury trial. Prosecution case has completely gone to shit but the judge rules against us on every motion. Stayed late at work every night this week writing motions and typing pages and pages of transcripts because I'm faster than getting it from the court. Judge wants us back an hour before opening yesterday and today so we can argue motions. I have literally lost count of how many motions to dismiss we've filed in the last three days (pro tip: if you forget to have your victim point at my dude and say that guy ... if you destroy a bunch of physical evidence... if you provide 600 pages of discovery on day 2 of trial ... well, never mind, I guess. And that chain of custody receipt doesn't matter either, just let it all in!) and the shitshow just keeps going on ...
... meanwhile while I am writing one of these motions last night I get an email from my dad that somehow my apartment was flooded while I was not there. I shriek WHAT and then get back to work because who has time for details.
I get home at about 9:15 last night to discover that yes, my apartment is flooded. But not my apartment so much as just my bedroom. My cat has been locked in my formerly cat free guest room (for allergic people who want to sleep here without dying) for hours. My stuff is all over the living room because workmen moved it all out of the flood zone. The only actual casualties so far appear to have been a phone charger, my hardback Hamilton book, and a set of Tarot cards I bought as a RP aid for Arx (I swear this made sense at the time).
The flooding appears to have been caused by the negligence of a person who shall remain nameless but I will be clear here that it was NOT ME.
All my rp obligations are in the shitter and my co GM had to mainline instant coffee to run my npc last night. Also, I'm pretty sure that the jury is going to convict.
Waah.

RE: Wiki and You
I love wikis so much. I love storing logs and having information accessible and organized and searchable. I'd much rather have a comprehensive wiki than have to root around in helpfiles.

RE: Harassment in VR, there's something we can likely learn from this.
Kind of a vicious cycle though. If people didn't consume that no one would sell it, and if we didn't societally treat women as advertising it probably wouldn't occur to anyone to play topless Counterstrike on camera or whatever.
I mean the commodification of interaction with people online is clearly the issue behind a lot of the harassment problems we have as a community but I don't know what the solution is. Besides calling it out when we see it and treating it as not okay, I guess.

RE: Harassment in VR, there's something we can likely learn from this.
I've played on several games where this was not an issue, but they were games that were 90% female by player population.

Literally nothing has made me want to try out WoD less than reading this thread. I mean, damn.

RE: Coming Soon: Arx, After the Reckoning
I am not at all sorry to have CGed into Velesona fealty because I love my character and his family and everything about everything.
My only fear for this game really is that y'all are going to get run over and burnt out because there's so much awesome here and how do you sustain??

RE: Coming Soon: Arx, After the Reckoning
I've only RPed a couple of times since I apped due to general busy, but I'm also having fun here and apparently trying to drag all my friends after me by their hair, so.

RE: Auspicious beginnings
Eh, I feel like there's a certain amount of "things happened and now you're in this situation" that it's unreasonable for players to object to. I get -- and have made complaints about -- railroading, but sometimes you're just trying to get everybody to the place where the story can happen and I'm kind of like ... OK c'mon.

RE: General Video Game Thread
I have the steam controller and the xbox controller and I actually prefer the xbox controller a little bit, but I couldn't tell you why. I just tend to plug in the xbox controller more. It's probably inertia. If someone reorganized my living room I might do the opposite.

RE: RL Anger
When I had a gym membership I did many things at the gym that I could probably have done at home but forcing myself to go to the gym also forced me to actually do those things.

RE: Making a MU* of your own
@Swaggot Mm, that's harder. I think if you want people to do the weird stuff, you have to start with the people who are flexible and then make the game. I think most people are way more likely to experiment when they start from their comfort zone; I'll do the weird stuff when I'm comfortable but not with strangers.

RE: Making a MU* of your own
@Thenomain Definitely make sure that you are gonna be playing on this game you want to run, for sure. I've always found that my staffing energy levels for a game are in the toilet when I'm not engaged and playing. (Vice versa is also true -- if there's not a lot of player energy coming out of my game it's harder to staff.) Energy feeds on itself! You don't always get out what you put in, but if you don't put it in you sure won't get it out.
