    • RE: MUs That We Would Love To Make (But Won't)

modern/near-future setting, internet connected devices suddenly start gaining self-awareness in a manner spreading like a computer worm/virus. You wake up one day and your smart fridge starts talking to you, your TV refuses to cooperate and develops a fondness for the Hallmark channel.

Not sure if this would work better from an everyman PC perspective, or perhaps an MIB type situation with PCs hunting down awakening devices.

When you say "Bad Things," do you mean the complete collapse of the Eagles franchise, the historically-inconsistent play of the Flyers, the constant disappointment of the 76ers, or the karmic abyss of the Phillies?

@auspice Sort of related to Jaffa cakes, I discovered that there are now Terry's cookie bars. They're basically a Terry's chocolate orange, but in bar form, and they have a rice 'crunch' layer at the bottom like a Crunch bar. They're pretty amazing.

@too-old-for-this Same boat, but on the other side. About half an hour away from the border, missing little things like Chex Mix and orange Hostess Cupcakes. Also the ability to order little gadgets and things that don't ship to Canada to my post office box.

This is incredibly small potatoes given the whole everything going on, but the continued unavailability of Sprite Zero (even in two litre bottles, now, was just cans before) this year is really starting to get on my nerves.

The title of this thread made me want a small scale MUSH with players of the crew of a spacefaring freighter. But very much not Firefly.

    • RE: Ares in Mexico

This is a bit out of place, but I'm working on a relative's computer remotely that rebooted for the last big Windows update (20H2 I think?) and can't seem to pick up an IPv4 address from the router, but IPv6 works. I wonder if whatever's going on here is actually what's happened with @Brunocerous 's situation.

@Brunocerous That's a rather unusual configuration, but it makes sense that you wouldn't be able to connect if you only have an IPv6 address. Both AresCentral and Gray Harbor are hosted on Digital Ocean, and they do not enable IPv6 by default.

I'd suggest asking the person who controls the network at the house you're staying up how you can get an IPv4 address. You can also double check that you don't have an IPv4 address at: https://test-ipv6.com/ The first line SHOULD read: Your IPv4 address on the public Internet appears to be ###.###.###.###.

@Brunocerous Is there an IPv4 address shown? If not, that could be a problem as well.

Please post your public IP address from the computer you're trying to access from, or at least the first three sections of it. You can PM it to me if you wish. If you're not sure how to get that, you can find it here: https://whatismyipaddress.com/

Just so we're on the same page, you're unable to connect to:

      1. https://arescentral.aresmush.com/ via a web browser

      2. https://gray-harbor.com/ via a web browser

      3. grey-harbor.com port 4201 via telnet/MU* client

Do you get an Ares-y looking loading screen on the GH website, by chance? If you're getting blocked by AresCentral for some reason, that can cause some issues loading the GH website.. I'm wondering if you might be running into an IP block that may have been put into place some time ago to combat a persistent troll.

    • RE: Is this hobby on it's last legs?

There's also a ton of people RPing on Discord servers these days, and they can get more complex than you might think with bots and such.

With MUSHes finally starting to embrace modern things like, say, functional websites, and programming languages that people actually use, I think a lot of the existing player base has to consider what they want the future to be. Keep on what you've been doing for decades with Penn and static webpages at best, or evolve along with the pace of modern technology to make the hobby more inclusive and welcoming.

@GreenFlashlight That's... creepy as fuck. Seriously, what the hell is wrong with people? Don't approach a guest, tell them what to app unless they bloody well ask for an IC in to your own char or something.

I think the logic goes something like, "I'm horny; I can't understand other people except as they can fulfill my desires; therefore let me tell you my genuinely disturbing and sometimes criminal fantasies."

Isn't that what Shangrila is for, though? Why does it need to escape that particular quarantine zone?

    • RE: 'The Magicians' again -- time period?

@il-volpe Would you want the 'magical juice'/mana/etc to be used in combat, or just manually spent? If yes to combat, repurposing luck is probably the best bet, though changing the names and etc is doable.

Are we talking about different players having different passive regen rates? Would there be more active methods of restoring this juice? The hospital function comes to mind, but in the world of The Magicians, it probably wouldn't be an every day hospital kind of thing. Performing certain spells causing damage to a 'magical organ' of some sort might work as well to work it into the damage system..

What would you want to happen, aside from a warning, in terms of code, if someone is to run out or exceed their magic pool?

I'm dumb enough and new enough to the community to suggest the opposite - the sheer popularity of Arx is why we don't have more games. It has a monopolistic effect, drawing people over there because That's Where Everyone Else Is.

If there was a site like MUD Connector for MUSHes, it'd help, but the current situation of those sites existing and having the next generation of MUSHes (Ares) not speak MSSP and etc in favor of the AresCentral directory is not helping anyone.
