Indeed. Spidey player was very (repeatedly) adamant that his Aunt May was a very old lady.

I'd really love to make a Pro Wrestling MU
And a Mortal Kombat MU
And a Sonic The Hedgehog MU that isn't run by crazy people.
Maybe a Hellsing MU with the power level scaled down?
That's not gonna happen, though.
@Sunny Well. Okay. Not run by someone who's a malignant tumor on legs.
I'd prefer a wider scope in characters, rather than just teens and trainess. Older heroes and mentors and whatnot. I also lean towards freeform roleplaying, but some kind of system for sort out outcome disputes or something might be a good idea.
Homages seem okay, but I don't know that I'd make them explicit; and I'd probably cap the attainable power level somewhere below Superman for player characters, since they tend to create issues and questions just by existing; even if they can contribute interesting things.
Unrelatedly, I don't remember if I've said this before, but I'd go nuts for a Pro Wrestling mush. Loads of colorful characters with exaggerated issues that are all solved by fighting each other; an expectation that some good guys will become bad guys; and some bad guys will become good guys when convenient for the narrative/a good fued. The occasional wrestling undead mortician. It'd be awesome.
In my experience, the broadly defined 'social scenes' work best when they incorporate/reflect on/build on current goings on, plots, and relationships that are developing, or that people have been affected by. I've never really been able to overcome the awkwardness of just bumping into someone my character doesn't know somewhere without a OOC plan for what comes of it.
@carma Shit talking, physical assaults, cheating during matches, corrupt officials; combatants momentarily BECOMING officials with agendas, partnerships forming and then imploding into violence, evil stables that take power over the wrestling organization; all kinds of good stuff in a world where a pull-apart brawl or protracted beat down could reasonably erupt over the slightest act of disrespect or misunderstanding.
So far I just do it because:
A) The client is easier to keep at hand than one tab among many.
B) Ares, to my knowledge, can't currently be programmed to highlight certain words and names in a different color.
and
C) It also, to my knowledge, can't be programmed to make sound notifications when certain words appear in the client to let me know someone trying to get my attention or whatnot.
That and it lets me connect to ares games and non-ares games on the same client, though I'm not sure how big a factor that is necessarily.
I kind of feel like the threat of people freaking out because a lack of available alts or whatnot is kind of overblown. And, honestly, if torches-and-pitchfork people really exist in meaningful numbers... do you need those people on your game? Do you need to placate them? I feel like you'd be better off without them.
@Botulism Does this mean it's safe to connect to the game and make characters now? You haven't given the green light yet on the 'gauging interest' thread where you asked people not to. ^^
@Bad-at-Lurking Dunno. It could be kinda tricky, especially with DC, since there are so many sidekicks who could conceivably be the 'next generation' of 'main heroes' already, though I guess people could dream up the new generation of up-and-comers?
EDIT: That said, dibs on Mayday.
@sunnyj I agree! My only worry is that we’ve gone so long without one that it might not really be coming. Better late than never, though; I’d love to not only see this rp style evolve, but also gain a reliable way for people who’ve never rped to find it. Heck, I basically only discovered mus by a fluke. ^^;;
MK11 spoilers.
Starting to wonder about specifics. Like, whether it should be set up more or less exactly where MK1 or 2 started, or if it should have the theme of the New Era that ended up being created at the end of MK11, in which case Shinnok might never have existed and the Netherrealm might be ruled by somebody else. That might also mean that at least Liu Kang and Raiden might not be around anymore either
No matter what, I'd be tempted to just toss the Chaos and Order Realms; though I'd hate to lose Havik.
@Ghost Oooh! Ooh! Or WoD (or something) in the Hellsing universe! Maybe with the power levels scaled down from Alucard's ridiculous abilities.
@GreenFlashlight
I kinda feel like if you're running a game built around a nearly hundred year history of sexy people in skin tight spandex, you've already lost the war of characters being fetishized, and should just be very strict about your 'no TS/sex-weirdness/take-it-to-Shang' rules.
@gryphter Personally I think attempting to act would hinder collaborative storytelling more than it would help; and also make describing your actions much more awkward.
Thanks! Now I kinda wonder if I can play Bastilla or someone. @__@
@TNP I kinda feel like it's super limiting to not be able to refer to or use any connections for anyone who might conceivably be apped. I don't really see the difference between that and saying, I dunno, Alfred's been apped now, all those past scenes were referring to a DIFFERENT Butler, or a DIFFERENT cat themed burglar like what tends to happen when a character gets dropped and then picked up by someone else.
@gryphter If fan sites were more of a thing, I'd say ask them to let people know about you if you have a relevant game. Though there's still the issue of 'you have to download one of a dozen unsupported decade old programs and learn new commands to start'.
I don't know if a concentrated Roleplaying Wiki would help, since you have to wrestle google not to show you Dragon Age or whatever when you search for roleplaying. Though if your game is based on a franchise, asking to be included in a section of a fan wiki might not be the worst idea. Not sure what the actual answer is. Maybe someone who knows more about searching/advertising/being findable in a search would know something.
If nothing else, it sure would be nice if it was easier to stumble on a list of/explanation of MUs in general without knowing the MU terminology beforehand.
I'm bias because playing Leia on a game is on my bucket list, but it'll be how it'll be.
