    • Evennia question

Hey guys. I hope this is the right place to ask this.

I've been looking at Evennia since it seems to let me poke at making a game before buying server space and whatnot, and it seemed like a good place to figure out if I'm out of my league before I spend any money. But looking at the instructions on the website, after installing three programs, it tells me to... 'cd' something, or 'pushd' to an install location, and it's not clear to me what that means, or what it's referring to. Am I missing some kind of slang, or is it assuming I know something about code interface? Or should I just open Python/Git/C++ and they'll tell me? I haven't been able to look at them yet since I need to reboot to finish with them and I have stuff going on.

These are the instructions I'm looking at: https://github.com/evennia/evennia/wiki/Getting-Started#windows-install

It's also not clear to me if I'm supposed to download Evennia from somewhere, or if that's something one of the programs handles. Sorry if I'm being dense. I don't have a lot of context in my head for what I'm trying to learn how to do. I wish there was just a big download installer where you push the shiny button and it puts a tutorial/building/testing game on your computer.

EDIT: Had to, er... actually link to the instructions this time.

@Ghost I dunno, I'm not a huge fan of crossovers at the best of times, and I'd want to focus on the MK cast and their roles and relationships to each other. If you introduce a whole other fighting game cast, you risk one greatly outweighing the other, or spreading so thin that people feel like the character they app won't get to really interact with the people in their character's orbit, discouraging them from apping in the first place, I think.

At any rate, when I looked at Match of the Millennium, it seemed like they had four people from every series that didn't have much to do with each other. Which might be fine for people more creative than me maybe??? But I like to keep it focused and the characters close.

EDIT: I'd dig a Street Fighter-only game though. ... Weirdly enough I wouldn't mind crossing it over with SNK/KOF, but that still has the same problems; the two settings just gel a little better.

      MK11 spoilers.

Starting to wonder about specifics. Like, whether it should be set up more or less exactly where MK1 or 2 started, or if it should have the theme of the New Era that ended up being created at the end of MK11, in which case Shinnok might never have existed and the Netherrealm might be ruled by somebody else. That might also mean that at least Liu Kang and Raiden might not be around anymore either

No matter what, I'd be tempted to just toss the Chaos and Order Realms; though I'd hate to lose Havik.

@Jennkryst I glanced at Evennia and it looks like it might be the closest thing to at least being able to tool around with it before spending money? But I'm not sure, I have a hard time digging into walls of text, and it was late at night.

@SquirrelTalk Hell, I'd play a game just about Outworld.

@ZombieGenesis Agreed agreed agreed. Hell, with the ending of MK11 a game's kinda ripe to have a remixed take on the world/characters from the start of their arcs.

@Ghost Like I said, death isn't even that necessary and probably wouldn't be that common. It's the gimmick of the games, but the in-game world only has occasional deaths that are almost never permanent. Heck, two of the main bad guys can just bring their henchmen straight back to life.

Depends a little on whether fights are enforced by a system, or just roleplayed out, I guess, but on a consent based game, most fights will probably end without a character permanently dying.

EDIT: Only occasional MAJOR CHARACTER deaths, I should say; nameless henchmen, bystanders, and members of warrior clans die gruesomely all the time.

Late to the party here, but I would be super interested in a roleplaying focused game in the Mortal Kombat setting. The setting and characters are crazy, and I think it'd be super interesting if the playerbase held up, which is always the problem.

A lot of people get hung up on the 'death' aspect since it's so integral to the video games, but... storywise characters hardly ever die. Obviously 'kombat' would still be a common thing, but... no more so than most superhero games, I would imagine, with the same result of characters usually being driven off or knocked out.

I'm more interested in the stories and character relationships than anything. Making creative use of the setting and locations. Brutal fights, of course, are A+, but we wouldn't need to get hung up on systems or death, necessarily.

Unless it were OCs-only, and the theme was that you could make as many as you want, but the game's a meat grinder that could kill them at any moment. That could be kind of interesting, but... I really just want to play Mileena or Sonya. <__<

I really wish I knew how to make games, I'd totally work on this and another theme. Heck, I wish there was a way to just tool around with your own grid offline without having to buy server space, but it doesn't seem like it. 😕

@faraday Have you looked at Roleplaygateway.com? It's a complete mess, but it has some really cool ideas involved, like pages for games where you can set up tabs for lists of locations and characters, and make rooms for scenes, and have a basic chatroom for OOC stuff that might be worth looking at, if you haven't. Sadly the site itself is a mess to navigate, and the search system doesn't work, but you can pull up the most played games, I think, and look at what they've been able to build in.

@lotherio That may be so, but just because the percentage is going down doesn't mean there aren't younger people who'd still love to do something like this. Like, a hobby or a passion doesn't have to be shared by a majority to be worth giving them something to work with. Something to FIND for the people who still ARE into it, and aren't just the aging group of us that have been here forever bouncing between sinking islands.

    • RE: A new platform?

The closest thing I've found to what I was hoping for was Roleplaygateway https://www.roleplaygateway.com/roleplay/the-multiverse

You can create a game with a built in 'hub' chatroom like a OOC room, there are tabs for the characters and the information written for them; tabs for locations, I've even seen a grid with a graphical interface on some games, and you can make private rooms for scenes, the logs of which can be kept up and sorted by story arc.

The only problems are A) The scene rooms appear to be forum-play style exclusively, when I'd like the ability to do both when schedules don't quite match up; and B) It is ACTUALLY impossible to search for any specific type of game in its own system. There's a heaving mass of one-off games, and the search function literally doesn't work, and doesn't even pretend to offer the functionality to sort by genre, or give a dropdown list of tags to add or anything that might help sort through it; and, the eternal problem: how the heck do people find this? I mean, I did, but I had to strangle google to make it show me something other than Dragon Age.

Also it doesn't seem to have been updated by the people in charge for years. So, like MUing, it's kinda something you have to either already know about, or stumble onto/get invited to.

Something like this with more functionaity, more of a visual/graphic interface for things like bulletin boards and mail, but keeping the old style of live RP and ongoing stories, while allowing people to chuck poses in forum-style when they can't meet up live, would be pretty great imo.

@lotherio I didn’t disagree with you; just commented that my personal preference didn’t lean towards roll20’s tabletop focus.

@lotherio That’s cool, though I lean more towards collaborative storytelling rp games. Might be fun to have the potential for random disaster, though.

      @sunnyj I agree! My only worry is that we’ve gone so long without one that it might not really be coming. Better late than never, though; I’d love to not only see this rp style evolve, but also gain a reliable way for people who’ve never rped to find it. Heck, I basically only discovered mus by a fluke. ^^;;
