SunnyJ's Anti-Sexual Harassment Guide
Important: You can't always sniff out potential offenders before anything happens, and I try to treat everyone very well, even when I have a bone to pick with that person, so this is not a guide to keep sexual harassment 100% off your life, but what works with me to keep it 100% from growing past the point of 'Okay, now I am uncomfortable.' This worked out well with me so far, and I hope it helps someone out there.
-
When it gets to The Point where you are uncomfortable and things have taken a weird turn, do not dwell on 'did I do anything to lead us here'. The important thing is that you are clear, and polite, about stopping it. Start logging and reply the following: "Hey, dude, is it okay if we didn't talk or take things in this direction? I am not really comfortable with that and I would like it to stop. We good?" Most harassers will not take the hint, but the good people who are, maybe, overly excited, will. No, not everyone who wants to bone your character is a (total) weirdo.
-
If the person insists, then you have an issue, and while still logging (cannot reiterate enough, log this shit) you reply: "Look, I asked one, and pretty nicely. Nothing like this, at all, is happening, ever. If this is not the last time we ever talk about this, I am going to staff. Please stop."
-
If you have a harasser that goes on beyond that, LOG THE CONVERSATION and contact staff and send the logs. Be nice to staff, they are probably going to read some weird shit, but demand action.
-
If staff fails to do anything, and you have followed these steps, then leave the game, Hog Pit it, bring the logs, and go at it. There is no shame in doing everything right and being harassed.
Add-ons:
i. Do not give your instant messaging information, or ANY personal information, to people you know for less than two months in a MU. That helps when the person reveals to be some psycho.
ii. If a game has a weird atmosphere you feel contributes to this sort of behavior, leave. The emotional stress is not worth playing a werewolf, your favorite hero or in some fictional universe you dig.
iii. Shed light on the subject. You are hardly going to get lambasted for trying to reason with a creep and failing. Moreover, letting the community know what is going on, with PROOF, is a good way to protect others, men or women.
iv. Do not go through steps 1 and 2, only to TS the person or have a sex-filled page talk with them. That will undermine the seriousness of your request and your case. If you made this mistake, you SHOULD still go to steps 3 and 4, but learn and do not repeat the mistake next time.
Did I say log everything?

RE: Potential Game / Temperature Read
The Magicians sounds super cool.
As for a system, it all depends on how crunchy you want it to be? I agree that nWoD Mage is not a good one at all. Too powerful, a tad complex and even if you master it... it is still unbalanced and not really worth it. If you want to create a system, I would love to help if you wanted, otherwise, I would suggest adapting from Blood Sorcery (which is way simpler than Mage).
I have not seen The Magicians yet, so I wouldn't know what fits the setting the best, but I would fo sure watch it for the game. Sounds cool and all!

RE: Make MSB great again!
Have some easy-to-find, constantly-updated list of games.
Keep the Hogpit in the Hogpit
Keep the Advertisement Threads free of nasty bashing (although I do feel like players should be free to post in them things like "Had bad experiences with this game. Will explain in the Hogpit").

RE: POLL: Super Hero MU Gut Check
This is my take on the OC vs FC thing.
OCs should not expect to have people lining up to play with them just because they got approved by staff. Other players are not evil, or assholes, if they are just not interested in your new character when they have a sizeable selection of other characters who have been part, in some way, of their lives. Maybe they will turn around and give the OC a chance when they realize that just because someone picks Wolverine doesn't mean they can RP an interesting Wolverine, but getting angry over it, or even frustrated, is silly, imo.
I levy the same criticism towards people who pick famous characters like Xavier and complain nobody wants to RP with them when they make their Xavier a MovieVerse, Time Travelling, James McAvoy (<3) sly Professor. Although I really liked that character, I can see people wanting Good Ol' Charles in the mansion.
@Vorpal This is no Appeal to Tradition fallacy. This is 'I grew up with Iceman, and I want to interact with Iceman and be his best buddy for a few months'. OC Players cannot fight nostalgia with an OC and expect to win just on the merits of thinking they are awesome. I get they think their ideas are awesome, but sometimes other players just don't see it. Expecting everyone to be "OMG YES AN OC I NEVER MET BEFORE" to be the reaction, or else they are assholes, is just not fair, or reasonable, to say nothing of belittling just how much the love for some of these characters colors people's very desire to even play on Hero MUs. OCs sometimes have more difficult entry costs, and that is inherent to the nature of those games. Find the players like @Ganymede, who are plenty, and work from there! There are a lot of different people playing these games.
On customizing FCs:
I don't mind when people change their FCs a little, or if the Wolverine in the game is a left-leaning Bernie Sanders supporter or Emma Frost is just starting a new line of shoes for mutants with Jumbo Carnation. What I am interested in seeing is how the other player got to that point by following what I think are the 'guidelines' of that character's personality. If someone RPs Cyclops as some dumb jock who loves memes and slips on a banana peel every day he walks into the Danger Room, I would surely stop RPing with him.
Want to RP a bi Cyclops who has forsaken his laser beams and is learning Comic Book Kung Fu with Psylocke because he recently killed an innocent mutant? I am all in.

@Goldfish Had fun with Lash, Goldfish! Good luck and have a blast wherever you play!

RE: Descent Reboot
@Taika Storytellers are the single most valuable resource a MU can have, so that they get something for their troubles makes sense. It is also not what I was talking about, though. When you add up those rewards, you start to look at characters who can maybe double their XP income in a week, and even if you don't think a 45XP character is a dinosaur (we can disagree on that) odds are they will have a lot MORE by the time the 8 month mark hits.
When that happens, how do you plan on making new characters excited at all about engaging with a game if they cannot compete, at all, with the established characters? Is that by design? If so, then okay! If you don't want that to happen, you should plan accordingly!
-
RE: Descent Reboot
How are you preparing for a Vampire game, set in a post-apocalyptic setting (where I am assuming violence is a more constant and reliable way to solve disputes and where there is a smaller presence of society and, therefore, societal punishment for it), to not devolve into a warzone, if you plan on OOCly cooperation?
Are you sure multiple Princes is not going to dilute the title and the playerbase? Wouldn't the head of the Covenants (if those exist) fill these 'high authority' roles a bit better? Is there a reason to allow multiple Princes other than to let players feel good about the title?
Is the XP capped? How do you plan on handling stagnation once 45+ dinosaurs (around 8 months, not accounting for Beats farmed through aspirations, plots and other means) have a stranglehold on the positions and are the law of the land?

RE: Eliminating social stats
My opinion is: Social skills and attributes will not be missed. Good riddance.
The only social system I would ever use in a game again is Green Ronin's Intrigue system for Game of Thrones.

RE: POLL: Super Hero MU Gut Check
We will never agree. This is MSB. The people who want to make the game need to decide and move on. If they are waiting for a discussion on MSB to end in an unanimous way this game is over, thesis confirmed (there is interest in a supers game) and that is all.

RE: POLL: Super Hero MU Gut Check
My suggestions:
Theme: Feared and Persecuted
I know people dig their heroics, but the O5 (Original Five) felt to me like a necessity, a response of a species that needed protecting instead of a group of superheroes. When you put the X-Men as a struggling minority fighting for acceptance is where they are best, and it brings the characters together. When the world outside is dragging obvious mutants across the streets tied to pickup trucks, you make all aspects of your fight (philosophical, physical, etc) that much more important. The Brotherhood believes that without action, mutants will be killed off, and the X-Men think too much aggression will put them firmly AGAINST humanity, and provoke a conflict nobody wants. Set the game in the pre-Onslaught Era (Good Old Cartoon Show, more or less) or Post 198 (Where all mutants were depowered by the Scarlet Witch and only 198 are left).
This makes the grid (either the Mansion or Utopia) matter, it makes the superheroes of the setting matter (what the fuck are THEY doing), it makes other characters matter (so few you can't really just say 'fuck off and die' even to your enemies), that sort of stuff.
Also, I like it, and that is VERY important.
Roster: Year Two
Let people write their own versions of Cyclops and Wolverine, for as long as they obey some pre-established notions written in the wiki. Stuff like 'Cyclops must be this age or older'' or 'Angel has been a Horseman by this point' and then general guidelines 'No player may erase family members of a character during CG as determined by Earth-616 continuity', stuff you NEED to make the game work. Stuff that will diminish the effects of 'Who is this OC living inside my favorite X-Men's character's body' and still allow for some creativity.Villains: When To?
The Brotherhood needs work. They need a home, they should have a structure for RP that lets them have friends, family, lovers and rivals among the X-Men and RP between them should be facilitated. However, some villains should be earned, imo, by Storytellers who prove they are capable of providing RP for the grid on a consistent basis. Characters like Sabretooth, Mystique and Mister Sinister should either be plot tools, or taken by people who know what they are doing and will help the game. I am a huge believer in not closing any doors, and being meritocratic. If players go the extra mile, maybe the game should find some wiggle room to allow some experimentation.Young X-Men
PLEASE do allow them. Mercury, Rockslide, X-23 are all great characters. I am not hot on OCs either, and I am much more prone to teach as Nightcrawler, Emma or Gambit if it is a FC student. I am not saying BAN OCs, but OCs need to understand they are fighting an uphill battle and not resent other players for it. It would be unfair to hate people for not liking OCs, as it would be unfair to ban OCs altogether.Enough Talk, Lets Game!
Lots of talking! Is this game gonna happen?! Or are we just babbling here?! -
RE: POLL: Super Hero MU Gut Check
Are you purposefully trying to make this thread unreadable?

RE: POLL: Super Hero MU Gut Check
@Ghost Setup a X-Men world like they were in the 80's~90's, and they were a hated, minor anomaly in the country (and not just another brand of superhero like they are today), and you establish two 'pockets' where the freaks can live among their own without fear. That alone should be enough to keep them together, IC, even if a character or another doesn't want to agree with Xavier or Magneto. I did love the 198 run too.

RE: POLL: Super Hero MU Gut Check
@Ganymede Best Lantern after this legend.
On topic, I think people hit the nail on the head early on. X-Men has two antagonistic groups that can also be allies, plenty of characters and backgrounds, and many tones to explore. You can got to space, prehistory, alternate timelines, talk about a lot of current subjects, TP professor Summer's car, etc. Would vote X-Men easily.
DC/Gotham could also work, but you lose the 'contrasting viewpoints' dynamism, and the power scale goes all over the place.
