@roz It was fucking nuts. Started somewhere in the mountains in Virginia, and followed us on and off into Maryland. Then it stuck with us and is occasionally rattling the house since we got home.

The brief pauses in the deluge with instances of 'God's talking to you visual effects' lightning in the distance was pretty dang cool, though. That's always neat, but it's so much nicer when it's in the rear window...

...that we are no longer driving through whatever the hell the sky was just doing. Day-bright lightning that looks like celestial doctors all signing a cosmic guestbook amidst intermittent hail is not happy fun road trip time.

    • RE: Let's talk about TS.

@pyrephox There is also the manipulative bullshit game of ’compete for me to feed my ego! I’ll even get you started by alternately negatively comparing you to them to make you feel insecure/neg you, and implying they are talking smack about you even though in reality they have no idea you even exist!’

These people really need to go dive headfist into a swimming pool full of broken glass. No water... just the broken glass.

@peasoupling There's probably an argument for squicks to be a thing even on non-sex based games. I mean... I don't see what they could hurt.

If you never want pregnancy RP just stick it in there. Wait, are we doing phrasing?

This is totally the point of prefs. Neutral space to inform.

Sadly, no extended comment yet because road tripping back home as I wonkily finger-type, but the prefs setup I harp on about is about making this kind of communication (in this context and others) easier.

Setting boundaries is a more complicated issue on nonconsent games because people can and will try to force the issue and this is problematic. It can become moreso when, even accepting the actions through ftb, the person pushing for TS they are now not getting in every sticky detail tries to ramp up the negative consequences for the person requesting ftb. Kinda long past time for games to adopt a zero tolerance policy on that skeevery at the very least.

    • RE: Character 'types'

@three-eyed-crow I have one weird exception to this, and it’s somewhat limited: if the characters meet in a crisis situation, and the traumatic event (note that isn’t plural) is somehow relevant.

For instance, if a character has a rat phobia due to being swarmed by them as a kid and our characters have been chased into and abandoned subway tunnel? Sure, OK, that’s fine to mention as the reason they’re freaking out more than normal so long as it doesn’t totally dominate the scene. It’s the classic ‘action movie quick trauma reference’ sort of trope.

If we’re strangers chatting in line for coffee, or that segues into how Creepy Uncle Bob touched them where their bathing suit covers and how they really hate beets? No. Just no.

Beach. Found a seahorse! Might have been alive since it wasn’t dried out. Spent 10 minutes trying to rescue the little bugger but it was already gone. Forgot to get a pic of the lovely little dude in the process. 😕

    • RE: Character 'types'

I definitely had types, but enough has changed over the past year+ that I can’t say if I would be able to play any of them if I got back into RP.

I tended toward artists and creative types primarily, but there were exceptions. For over a decade, all female. I tend toward ‘support’ charcters that may or may not ‘come into their own’ if events transpire that way, but it’s not something I ever start out with as a goal on the player side, even if the character has the goal in mind. Even in leadership roles, I prefer to use the additional resources and/or authority to enable a ‘support’ style approach: delegate to, create opportunities for, and spotlight others.

Pretty much everything I make has some kind of head baggage built in. It may help shape what drives them (for better or worse), it may be what has them getting in their own way on the regular, and often, it’s both.

@arkandel It was being done by Glitch and company before, also. As this dipshit’s favorite target, let me just note that I don’t exactly appreciate the call to leave all of his bullshit aimed at me standing, which was a pause in the deletion of posts from repeat offenders, not something new y’all just cooked up and had never been considered or implemented before. I’m out of town and not even checking in much, let alone doing anything to this harassing gasbag, but he’s stirring shit again? Really? I don’t know if I should be grateful or pissed to have missed whatever new poison he vomited forth.

No drama flounce or horror show; just heading out to road trip ville for a week+ish.

This is more or less a warning that while I may check in some, expect even shittier typing and brief responses to things. If you have some long question or something you want me to check in on, it's gonna have to wait, though. Same with any wiki inquiries.

@wizz That would be awesome. I think that honestly sounds like it could be a lot of fun. And to some extent -- more as observed by the complaints people have re: the way a lot of people play WoD -- something like this does seem like something people actually want and will and arguably already play (without having a proper fun home for it).

The town from Teen Wolf comes to mind a bit for this, too. They had some concept about ley lines or sacred sites/etc. drawing such things to the surface that could be useful to steal concept-wise -- something about the specific locations or something that is present there and draws out the supernatural (in this case, corrodes or destroys the veil).

There's an old HBO movie called 'Cast a Deadly Spell' that is the wrong period, but has some elements of this kind of blend going on. 'Lord of Illusions' is more on the horror side, but it has some stuff worth peeking at, too, I'd think.

(The quote is the closing line from Grandpa in The Lost Boys. 😉 )

@wizz ...you know, that really would explain so much about the 1980s when you really think about it.

Could even be semi-regional, like... solid as a rock on the east coast, then you hit the Rockies and it sorta... starts to putter out until you hit the west coast, where it's just gone.

    • RE: Interest Gauge: City of Mist Game

It's also somewhat possible to hybridize the two.

I mean, as it is, a lot of people play WoD as 'superheroes with fangs or fur'.

Pretty sure that indicates an audience for something that might be along the lines of a superheroes game, but with supernatural overtones and supernatural sources of powers. You could make a few basic templates of a sort if people want a simple pick-up-and-go for basic creature 'species' of a sort (generic vampire, generic animal shifter, etc.), and allow for more freeform things as well for those willing to crunch it.

As it is, there are characters like John Constantine and Doctor Strange in comics that have a much more mystical/supernatural bent. A society in which these types are 'out of the coffin' could be pretty damn creative and fun, I'd think.

I will admit, it was one of the fun aspects of Darkmetal: supers were known. Hunted/illegal, but known. If stripping out some of the edgelord trenchcoats and katanas and grimdark and cyberpunk from that sort of arrangement? I would think that could be a heck of a lot of fun. (And even some of the edgelord grimdark could be a thing in certain parts of town, etc.) You could create a fairly interesting world out of that pretty easily -- like licenses for being a thing, etc. in a similar fashion to Nigthwatch/Daywatch/etc. as well, and so on.
