    • RE: Fallen World MUX?

      @Bobotron

      From their chargen pages:

      Command: +stat/set <Skill.Specialty>=1

      So it's based on my code.

      I think I know what this is, but I don't know if I'm supposed to know. Consider, however, that I'm not done with the Mage code because of truly annoying things like "Arcane XP" and "Proximi" and "Spells".

      I'll leave it up to them to out themselves if/when they want.

      Cool wiki. I can't wait to play in 1940s Americana with Mage.

      Line-height could be increased a pixel or two if they're going to use that drop-shadow. Higher contrast between readable-text and background would be nice, too. Maybe the latter will solve the issue my eyes are having with the former.

      More Edit: They probably should mention in their chargen pages that typing 'cg/check' will list how they're doing with setting stats, and unless they do something different on the game they missed the insanely important first step of 'stat/template <template name>'.

      @tragedyjones said in Attributes or No?:

      Theno, you dummy, Storyteller used Perception as a base attribute. Your silly mistake has invalidated all your intelligent arguments. I am sorry, this is the internet.

      Did it?

      Shit, that was a stupid decision.

      Almost as dumb as arguing over which skill matches with which attribute in a not-realized game system in a thread meant to discuss the general merits and drawbacks of any general system setups. I'm sure Lithium and Ganymede can go make out in their own thread. I'd say Coin could go join them, but his contribution would just be hate-sex.

      (Note: "Perception" as a base attribute wasn't a horrible idea, I just forgot the power/finesse/resistance breakdown was from the Storytelling System. So much from Storyteller System were bad ideas that you just had to shrug after a while and say, "Sure, what the hell.")

      (Second note: Imogen Heap, "Hide and Seek", makes it impossible for me to feel anything but relaxed and maudlin.)

      @faraday

      This was normal for 1980s video games. Nowadays I hear about playtime on some of these games and say things like, "Only 80 hours gameplay? And that's after buying all the DLC? What a rip-off."

      Wasteland 2 absolutely still has elements of that, but it's nowhere near as bad, at least not that I'd found. And Infocom games? "You miss doing one action near the very beginning of the game and you can't finish it" wasn't just normal, it was expected. Yeah, those games were designed to challenge nerds.

      I'm quite happy that game design has evolved and still remained challenging, but yeah, count yer bullets.

      The Wall Street Bull was guerrilla art. The Fearless Girl was guerrilla art (tho some claim astroturfing). And now a statue of a pug peeing on the girl's foot, guerrilla art.

      This is far more expensive than graffiti. A+

    • RE: What's That Game's About?

      Note: I never applied to what amounted to be "the complete opposite of what a character in this game is about" for Werewolf. It was a believable story to illustrate that it isn't "Changeling Players" but "Dickbag Players" who were giving Tree a hard time.

      I did once write a background character for Immortal (a Purified) after merely being described what the game was about, only to find it was impossible to have that happen. I liked my background a whole lot better.

      And as Tree says, yeah, in Tabletop we can throw a lot of stuff away and just say, "Sure, why not, this seems more fun." In his specific situation, I believe Autumn Nightmares covers that exact situation. I do think that only the Core Book should matter, but when there's an official splatbook about something, it's very hard to go against expectations.

      Except for Fetch babies. I think everyone ignores Fetch babies. At least they should.

      @Wizz, I'm not sure what you're saying here. The Core Book can matter but still be wrong about things. I've given two, maybe three examples where Changeling: The Lost contradicts itself subtly but so completely that you have to make a decision whether or not the text is correct.

      In the case of all the White Wolf books, the "racial write-ups" (Seemings, in this case) have typically been about half from the view of that racial archetype. Ergo, take it with a grain of salt. It's either that or throw out the latter books entirely.

      I still want the Core book to be the only one that matters, but I also want a pony and White Wolf (nee Onyx Path) to be consistent and concise the first time. Did I mention I wanted a pony?

      Both of them come from similar conceits: Fantasy races exist openly alongside humanity. In the case of SR, it's more recent.

      Genres are not one-off things. Things can (and usually do) fall under more than one category. Even the categories are more suggestions than anything.

      @HelloProject

      You do know that there is merit behind the phrase "I am not my brother's keeper", right? Take that to the extreme: "Who cares if you have health problems with your kid when I have to find ways to get mine to eat?"

      Yes, there's a lot of selfishness in that, but humanity is from a species where concern of my pack informs a lot of the evolutionary things going on in our brains. It's not hard to understand, no matter what you say, even if it's stupid for the stage of evolution we need to be in.

      Incidentally, I genuinely and non-ironicly believe the "only one race: the human race" thing you're mocking Jim over. I find this informed by scientific principles and my humanist atheism. Thanks.

      Absolutely. There are ways that it can be done, but there's also my Secret Plans (er, which is to say, how I'd like to see it done).

      While handwaving magic is always an option, consider what a computer does, and what is required to make it do it. Between the complexity of its infrastructure and complexity of its internals, maintaining our modern technology is very difficult.

      Not to say that I can't find a way, but that suit-wearing goblins getting into their Lexus from a good day on Wall Street is not going to be a thing.

      @Meg

      This is very much a part of a very old argument: Who gets to decide what art means? I bet you a dollar that had this been about Joss Wheedon, many of us here would be tripping over ourselves to defend him. We have already had this discussion while talking about fans getting angry at show creators for changing what they, the fans, expected. Who gets to decide?

      I'm not disagreeing with anyone about what they believe the bull means. It's part of my dilemma. The man who created it was pulling from historical sources, out of his own pocket, to honor his adopted nation, I don't believe that anything he did was demeaning to women, so when someone is paid to say that he is, he has every right to be upset. He is essentially being given the middle finger other people co-opting his work. He wasn't even given a chance to clarify before this.

      I truly believe that an artist has the right and sometimes the obligation to defend their thesis. Almost every art school drills this into them.

      And this ties back to my RL Peeve above, that we can take this sense of equality too far. Are we? No, I don't think we are taking it too far, but I see shades of looking too shallowly at an issue because we don't like the original context.

      Funny that the only person I agree with so far on this is the Communist. Meritocracy has serious, outstanding, dangerous issues. Nuff said.

      @faraday said in MU* Server Technology/Features. What do you WANT, what do you SEE?:

      I mean, imagine what would happen if you set up a MUSH but then told people: "You can only pose in this one scene this week, and it involves everyone on the game, and you have to wait for the storyteller in-between rounds, and 1/3rd of the players are going to drop out before the first scene even finishes." It wouldn't work very well! But that's not a problem with the technology, it's a problem with the way the game is structured.

      Did someone say my second name, "You-have-to-be-careful-when-using-technology-to-solve-social-problems?"

      Not having played Storium, is the description you have a part of Storium's code, or is this a rule that many storytellers on Storium give it?

      If it's the former, then it is a code issue. It's a bad code issue (looking to solve a social problem, perhaps?) that should be looked into by Storium's developers, or should be settable per story.

      If it's the latter, then storytellers are being kind of silly.

      The system can be 100% automated for XP spends. Even stupid things like "half price if this bloodline and also spirit allies 2 or higher and it's the third Thursday before the first full moon of the month." It's staff who choose what can't be casually bought, such as Willpower dots or Blood Potency 6. Having staff be intimately involved with character advancement is a powerful tool. That some games have to turn it into a bureaucratic chore is unfortunate.

      Staff are going to get headaches with Changeling's Clarity trait, which will go up and down so much as to make Harmony seem stable.

      I may also force them to be involved when Arcane Beats are being spent, until I can comfortably come up with a solution.

      @griatch

      I've had a busy few days and this thread has exploded, so let me briefly say:

      "You should know this by now" is not the approach I see in many technical educational documents. Those I've been to where there is a user response section often lists reminders from users even before someone asks the question.

      That said, people who are learning don't know their git from their django, and these people won't always know that they should be reading a glossary. The people who know are people who need a refresher.

      Make sure you're in your game directory (and using the virtual environment with pyenv) before running the following:

      Someone who knows this already shouldn't be insulted by the reminder, but someone who doesn't could use the reinforcement.

      I actually think having PvP options is a good idea for online games even if they won't be focusing on PvP, but I was already typing and I wasn't going to let a good joke go to waste. Or even a bad one, apparently.

      @deadculture

      I would start from scratch. My 1e code is horrific, tho it works surprisingly well. I tried to write an interpreter for the roll system and without making house-rule changes, it is a level of complexity as used by warehouse shipment systems. I kid you not. Both @Chime and @faraday took a crack at it, and we all gave up.

      I can get to close enough, but I try not to code "close enough" as then it becomes a de facto house rule enforced by code. I'm not a fan.

      (Side note: that last sentence was suggested to my by my iPad. It is learning how I think. Neat!)
