      @surreality said in How Many Alts Would An Alt User Alt If An Alt User Could Use Alts:

      @Lotherio I'm not saying there's anything wrong with the terminology, just that what people have been talking about here re: 1 alt? They are talking about one login only. They are specifically referencing games that in your terminology would be described as 'no alts permitted' as per the explicit policy on those games.

      That works for me, not arguing that, just supporting the confusion @Sunny expressed in main and alt and the confusion that could abound.

      I understand the confusion, but not the anger that came from clarifying it. I also don't believe that limiting to one character bits or two makes a lot of difference in this discussion, no matter what it's called.

      @Thenomain because this is a thread about you, what's your take? 3-D movies, yes or no?

      Largely no. For the spectacle, sure; Captain Eo was certainly fun nonsense. And Avatar so far is the only movie I've seen in 3D that was produced well for 3D.

      Let me expand that Avatar was also well directed, the sound effects were gorgeous, the visual direction was breathtaking, and the acting wasn't half bad either. The script was so cringe inducing that you would have to pay me to see it again.

      An extremely award winning director (involved with the French original Beauty & The Beast, perhaps?) once said in an interview that no matter how good the actors, nothing can save a bad script. He directed one such movie to make that point. The interview was on Fresh Aire (Terry Gross specifically), but that's all I remember.

      The kind of visual science people who design video cameras, and directors who are at that level, also complain that the glasses dim the light range and few movies, at the time I read this, bothered to adjust for it. It also diminished contrast, which is harder to adjust for. Perhaps we're better with these things now, but I still have to generally say "no" to 3D.

      Not a snobby "no", just a "probably not worth it, no".

      A Cave Story for $11 is much better than X-Com Declassified for free.

      You'd have to pay me to play X-Com Declassified.

      Like, a free copy of A Cave Story.

      I kind of consider OP to be a somewhat fan-based attempt to keep WoD going. The fans are professional and semi-professional writers, but it's not their IP.

      I will accept some growing pains as the people in charge basically try to run a publishing company out of their garage. As long as it is just growing pains.

      I know you've been here for this over and over again, but it bears repeating: Staff is to facilitate fun, not beholden to it. This thread at this point could stand a link to Brus' Five Pillars of Good Staffing, as well.

    • RE: Fanbase entitlement

      @il-volpe

      And this is the rub. It seems there are two or three common definitions of "entitlement", but the one used in the article was most certainly the one your ex was using.

      For example, I disagree with House of Cards' Kevin Spacey, as the United States Constitution and Bill of Rights entitles its citizens to quite a lot. I'll agree with Joss that investment in fiction doesn't entitle fans to demand certain behaviors of the authors, but I'll also agree with Gaiman (and you) that the expectations of your audience is incredibly important.

      Really, had I not been writing on a tablet at the time, I might have gone on to say that the originally linked article was pretty horrible because it was comparing two things which are not exclusive, using loaded link-bait phrasing. "Chocolate: It's poison! And delicious!" Er, yes, these two things are true. And? And?!

      This scene probably made Babylon 5 one of the best, if not the best, sci-fi series of all time.

      RIP Steven Furst.

      One word: Triss.

      For whatever reason, Witcher 3 didn’t let me romance her. And in the end I’m glad, because Triss was a whiny do-gooder, and I’m always too nice in all the games I play. The way I played, tho, Yennifer was a complex and interesting woman.

      I'll boil this down even further:

      Staff should show respect for the time and effort given to a game.

      @surreality

      Mage at Arcana levels 1 and 2 aren't bad, as Mages can no longer, e.g., see you everywhere you are at any time and instantly gib your Vampire ass.

      However, once they hit 3, keep the gun handy and the lye vat on stand-by. How cheap Rotes are make them no-brainers, and any game spitting out XP like chocolate will quickly have a Mage power problem.

      On the other hand, Mages get a lot of penalties to overcome, and they aren't as powerful as they were in the past. I mean, this is like saying that the uzi isn't as powerful as whatever gets mounted on attack helicopters, but it's a thing. Generalizing the Clash of Wills also helps a lot.

      The problem with the game industry is that it's an industry, that any businessman worth their salt is going to look for a way to maximize return on investment.

      The problem is that even noble callings like Electronic Arts will eventually put people in place who are looking at the bottom line first. I know enough technical people who work at banks who are looked down upon because their politics isn't good, even though their code practice pretty much keeps things working efficiently enough that the managers don't have to think about it. The IT Crowd doesn't even start to scratch the surface. And this is a Fortune 500 company.

      No, bad managers and bad HR will ruin anyone's experience, everywhere, but without any managers or IT then artists (even code artists, or artisans) will have to learn to manage themselves. Which, y'know, they should.

      Speaking of small game companies and the bottom line, Tim Schafer helped start this Kinda Kickstarter For Video Games: https://www.fig.co/

      @Insomnia

      The problem with saying it's only text, is that cyber bullying is a very real thing now, when it really wasn't an issue before.

      Before when? It was an issue before any of us were even little sperms and eggs. You may note this little chestnut:

      • Sticks and stones may break my bones but names will never hurt me.

      This is a lesson on harassment over things that are "only words", and that's from a time where we had good old fashioned personal attacks, rumor, and innuendo.

      What I think is different now is that the attack vector has changed, and with the anonymous component and with the larger audience I think this is why we're seeing more about it. That said, damn if I don't consider myself lucky that I had to live through only one suicide when I went to High School. Things were much better in my day.

      But words still hurt, and text had nothing to do with it.
